There's something about the self which needs to be improved.

Personally I like Jim Rohn's definition of "Personal Development." I subtle but important distinction (I think.)

    That's am important distinction, I agree. From my perspective there really is not much, if anything, we can do to improve "self". But there is much we can do in the area of personal development.

    I'm reading a book titled something like, "Before they changed the world". It's the stories of 22 world leaders and what in their youth or formative years made a profound change in their development towards becoming the leaders they became.

    I think that's why the personal development leaders often say that they are not motivational speakers but rather something like mentors or trainers. It's not hard to understand the difference because external motivation is so short lived. Think of a metal rod being inserted into a hot fire. Soon the metal is affected and itself becomes red hot, but when removed from the external source of heat returns to its normal cool hardness.

    Jim Rohn had quite a few amazing distinctions. My favorite is where he talks about the daughter wanting to go to a concert. In one version the father rolls up the money and throws it at her and says if you want to go so badly here it is. In the second version he buys great seats and gives them to her as a present. Same money yet such a different outcome, both externally and internally.

    Personal development does capture what individuals can do to improve various facets of their domestic, professional and business lives.

    Indeed, I was pleasantly surprised recently to have met a business owner who positioned her award winning business in the 'personal development' niche. Because personal development is often seen more as part of providing training in organisations and individuals choosing to have a new purpose/focus, it can be difficult to sell and find clients with ability to pay for your services.

    Yes, personal development goes beyond the individual and cover various facets of our lives.
