Increase focus while working online

One of the biggest problems I had while working online was the huge number of distractions that are available. Over a period of time I was able to train myself to avoid being on facebook every five minutes or check my email every two minutes.

Here are a few things that will help you avoid distractions:

1. Have a schedule: Working on your own can easily allow you not to be organized, which is a big no-no. You need to have a daily schedule, I prefer to make one at the end of my day. Having a schedule helps because you can keep a track of how much work you have done.

2. Give yourself days off: One of the most important things that I stress on to increase productivity is to give yourself enough rest, which not only energizes you, but psychologically pushes you to work to "earn" your day of rest.

3. Meditate before you work: Meditation before work can really help. It's not even all that complicated. All you need to do is give yourself some time to go over your ideas and goals and think about how you are going to reach them and how your life will be different after you accomplish them.

4. Surround yourself with the right people: This can really help, especially if you're just starting out. I had a lot of criticism when I was just starting out. You need to have someone who can push you, no matter how crazy you sound and understands you. This can't be just anybody make sure that they believe in what you are doing. In turn you begin to believe in what you are doing and yourself become more focused.

    sound advice -

also a to do list written the evening before is essential

as are targets to hit --

-targets you can aim at monthly or longer

-goals give you things to get there weekly

-and to do s are things you can do now and today to get progress

breaking things into manageable chunks is extremely useful -

youve probably heard this before but the basics are what give you a foundation to be effective

focus can always be increased - so go further like the SAS - they train so much that the real thing is easier that training

    Great advice guys.

I recently got my hands on Action Manage software which is a great help in keeping focused on the specific task on hand. If I remember correctly, I got it via the War Room here on WF. (I'm not affiliated with that software by the way.)

To eptravel: Mate, if you have no real contribution to make in the thread, I suggest you not post at all.

This forum is about helping and empowering other warriors in ways to succeed and not about putting down other warriors. Also that ^ is not a very good way of marketing your website.

It's also good to consider things that aren't adding to any of your goals and remove them from your to do list if they are unnecessary distractions.

Distractions are numerous and can destroy your focus if you are not careful.

Apart from a schedule that I write every evening, and my list of goals and targets, I have found that putting on your favourite music, in my case the rock band Queen and moving to the music for a while can really help focus your mind, and release your creative energy too.

I'd be interested to hear what other warriors think about this.

My problem is that I have so many IM interests and each has an equal place on my priority list. I have started many projects and have not progressed to making money with any of them. Several years have already passed and I keep changing direction. Have purchased loads of training courses and actually just now have managed to stop going after the next shiny object. Came here to the warrior forum because after reading many threads, realized that many warriors share my problem.

One tip i like to do is download all my e-mail and then go offline. That way you only do this once or maximum twice per day. Keeps you from being stuck in email all day long.

I'd also add that it's a good to schedule breaks; lunch/tea breaks etc in your day and block out time for forums/emails/social media etc

  • To stay focused, first, I need to have a printed copy of the things I need to accomplish within the day. After going through them, I determine what needs to be done first. Prioritizing things, I've learned, is really the best way to get things done properly.

Second, I de-clutter my desk. I clear it from things that are not necessary for the tasks I plan to tackle within the day. By having things that are really needed at hand, I am training to focus my attention with what I have planned to do that day.

Lastly, I stay focused and discipline my mind to stay focus. Believe me, this has always been a personal challenge, if not a struggle. It is really easy to loose focus when working online as you can switch from one distraction to another in seconds. But I have to control if I want to accomplish something.

For example, I open one window and one window only to accomplish a certain task. When researching, I open Google. From there, I look for sites that fit what I am looking for in a topic I am researching about. After going through the site, I immediately close the tab if I found the article to be irrelevant. Then, I'll go to the next result, scan through the article, and immediately close the tab if the article is not responsive of the question I have in mind. I do this until I am fully satisfied that I have accomplished the lone task at that moment.

To summarize, there are two things I need to do before I get to work in any given day: one, preparing a list of the things that needs to be accomplished within my work hours and, two, conditioning my mind to focus on each task and to stay focused no matter what.

    Have a great workday, everyone!

Well, let me share a story on distraction. It's derived from mythology. The story goes like this - Once upon a time there lived a sage named as Vishwamitra who undertakes a difficult tapasya (Meditation) and was meditating successfully and he knows that if he completes his meditation 'he will be able to conquer the heaven/world'. Seeing this 'Indra' king of gods gets afraid and plan to distract vishvamitra and in this direction he sends a beautiful dancer 'Menaka' to vishwamitra's place to distract him so that the meditation fails. Menaka there dances, sings songs, and finally brakes the meditation of Vishwamitra who upon awakening mets Menaka and ends up marrying her.

Well - in online activities where success is concerned we are always distracted with so many Menaka's in form of Facebook/you tube/links/emails etc, etc. that if allotted more time brings our productivity down.

Much of this advice is spot on. Focus and scheduling your time are great. I find it helps if you know what time of day is your best time to work (it varies from person to person). Being tough on friends and loved ones while your working can help. Doing things like making up rules not to respond to personal emails or texts while your working may seem kind of tough, but you could schedule breaks as well like Leanne said earlier.

In reality, it can be challenging to motivate to do anything in life. Things like working out take some dedicated effort for many of us to keep up on them. Just like working out though, the benefits of sticking to your schedule and staying focused can result in great success. That's probably one of the best motivators, when you finally experience success as a direct result of your efforts. You just have to keep at it!

Also, I love the idea of printing out emails. Maybe never even signing in to Facebook or the like would be a good habit to get into. What would we do without those cute kitten videos, though?

There's a company called Immrama that sells Binurual Beat meditation cd's as well as similar Binurual Beat CD called FOCUS. I use the Focus CD while woking on projects and notice that it works extremely well with helping me focus. An alternative is to listen to some of the studying music on Youtube - but I have found the focus CD helps me the best.

I agree with some of the replies you have gotten so far. I like to plan at least one day ahead and write everything down. Then I can check it off as I go and stay on track. I then carry over to the next day what I don't get done. It is nice gratification if I can get all things marked off my list. I also schedule breaks and phone use, so that I am not constantly checking my phones and e-mails and am moving on with my list.

    Hope that helps!

Great thread and great advice. I struggle with some of this and it can lead to a destructive ending if you let it. And trust me, it can happen quickly. I work from home doing SEO work and while on my computer, I choose to browse Facebook and my email and time to time celebrity news. It can lead to a days end of not much work getting finished and thus, your work being less than what it should've been. Thanks for the advice. What a great motivating thread!
