Yes, it seems to be a good exercise which you mentioned. It will force us to pick out and write whatever positives we can think of coming out of any experience. Then, when we do so, our minds will start focusing on those positives instead of just delving on the problems or negatives of any incident.

As our minds start focusing on positives and the opportunities contained within any negative event, we can surge much ahead of others who are lost in complaining. They are unlikely to gain much out of that event while we have a better chance.

We always hear people say "Think Positive", to someone who feels worried and down. Some people do not take it seriously because they do not know how to use it effectively to get results.

I completely agree.

Positive thinking is the best. I'm creating new years resolutions, and what helps me maintain them is this:

Instead of writing something like:

Smoking is bad. I wan't to quit smoking, I write it as this:

I will keep my lungs smoke free to keep healthy and strong. =) etc, etc... Positive thinking CAN change your life, if you let it!

I like that approach Jonathan 2.0 where you have a quote every time something is happening that you are dealing with. I was just thinking of how I need to change my worrisome thoughts as soon as my head is off the pillow. It is a habit and I notice I have nothing to worry about but it is so automatic that I wake up worried or stressed.
I will get back to affirmations before I fall asleep. Dr. Wayne Dyer says before you fall asleep do your affirmations and you will be increase the feeling in your sleeping life. Thank you Jonathan.

I believe one can help others to see the positive side by turning it into a question...

"How could this be turned into a good and positive thing in your life?"

Or...

"In what way could this become a positive thing?"

I just need to remember to use questions like those more often in my kids.

In order for a positive outlook to have some noticeable impact it
would have to represent a real part of a person's views.
He may start out in a purely mechanistic way with finding positive
aspects of a situation, but I wonder if there's some necessary period
of time until those mechanistic affirmations begin to be a natural
part of a person's psyche. And is there any means to speed up that
process or to make it more concrete?

I always admired a business man who would listen to a manger reporting some problem or how things had gone wrong, which more often than not, required more money to put the problem right. He would ask a few questions about details. And think for a moment. Then ask 'How can we turn this around to our benefit? How can we convert this problem into a money earner?'. He turned 'problems' into 'benefits'. What others called 'problems', he called 'Challenges'. The change of attitude meant the resolution of problems was achieved in a much more manageable and beneficial way. Problems can get you down, but this mental attitude was uplifting and inspiring!
