What's In The Background While You Work?

Most often I have talk radio on while I'm working, often on very dull Internet marketing stuff. How about you?

Funny thing, many times I have turned on my yelling shows, started working on something, only to realize an hour or two later that I have no idea what was said on the radio show. But it's background noise in an often lonely profession.

What I'm really writing about here is to share something that you MAY like. It is one of the first Internet radio shows ever, I guess. It began life many years ago as something you could only get on satellite.

I'm talking about none other than The YesterdayUSA Schedule, Player and Homepage ... I have been a fan since the early 90's.

YesterdayUSA plays Old Time Radio shows you have NEVER heard 24/7 and they refresh their shows every two weeks. It's often inspirational and will always leave you in a good mood.

For some, the old shows will be intolerable, but for others they will be a Godsend.

Like the Warrior Forum, listeners of YUSA are family, and they welcome new members. There are generations of information wrapped up in YUSA, and if you like it, you'll be hooked instantly. Some of their audio goes back over 100 years ago.

Of particular importance, at the time I write this, we're not far away from Christmas, and Christmas is the ULTIMATE best time to listen to YUSA. That's when the best radio shows ever made are played, and that's decades of Christmas shows. It will put you in a GREAT mood.

Hope you'll give it a shot. Oh...and I don't guess I mentioned. It costs... NOTHING. It has always been free and always will. No sign up. No nothing. Just click and listen. (But they will take a donation.)

All my best to my Warrior friends!
Norm

Some friends tell me that music makes them lose concentration, but I must say that the right music gets me pumped up! Music helps me to stay motivated and believe it or not keeps me from distraction.

Pandora is always on when my computer is on. This whole month is just straight Christmas music, quite possibly my favorite kind of music ever.

I always have house/ trance music on in the background, makes me work better whatever I'm doing.

I either have spotify on with my own playlists or turntable.fm for newer stuff.

I've tried all types of music but dance works for me.....takes allsorts I suppose

I like complete silence. Sometimes something classical or jazz but mostly I prefer there to be minimal noise in the background. I think that writing requires a high degree of concentration where as some IM related tasks you don't need quite the same single minded focus

    ....'marry christmas...toooo youuuuuu.....'

Cannot have upbeat music on it disturbs me. Must be quiet, soft, and relaxing.

Netflix. Star Trek, Lie to Me, Psych, Danny Phantom (yeah...).

"I can do 10 articles in one episode of Psych..." Turn on show, go.
"I can do 10 posts in one episode of Deep Space 9..." Turn on show, go.
"I can write one eBook in one episode of Lie to Me..." Turn on show, go.
"I can brainstorm for one episode of Danny Phantom..." Turn on show, go.

When the show's getting in the way, I'll sometimes switch to Pandora, but mostly, it's just shows.

Wifi, you absolutely would go stark staring bananas with old timey radio, then. And Gary, it's unlikely you're going to go into a trance with Fibber McGee and Molly on. And DG, space has it's place, but the soothing strains of Jack Benny's violin at Christmas can't be beat. ProScribe wouldn't get a lick of work done listening to the Lum and Abner Christmas show either.

I like the stuff so much that I have my own radio station rebroadcasting YesterdayUSA here... 107.9FM. If you're within two blocks of the house, get ready to do the Rudolph Rumble! I start listening to my 2000+ Old Timey Christmas shows right after Halloween, winding em up on Christmas day! Yeah, I kinda like em, and best of all, since I have them all memorized, it doesn't matter if I pay any attention to them or not!

I thought that for the best concentration, you should work in silence but is that really a bad thing?
I like listening to music while i work, again it helps keep me motivated. It is the same situation when i go to the gym. Sometimes when i can't seem to finish my reps off, the music motivates me to actually go for that rep and complete the set.

I like to listen to music when I work. Depending on my mood and what I need to get done, I mix it up. I can't work when it's quiet - can't concentrate when all I have to listen to are my own thoughts!

When I get to work, I really don't turn on my music player. I'd rather focus on what I'm doing rather than keep my head banging on rock music. For me, I can finish my tasks for the whole day when I get to concentrate.

Sometimes I might listen to music but I don't think that really helps me. I try to keep busy around the house sometimes and take a break about every hour so my eyes don't get tired and I can stay alert and focused. I also try to workout and drink a full glass of water with every break. Thanks Mark Joyner for this idea btw.

Different types of music help me for different things.

The usual: positive hip hop like RJD2, Blackalicious, etc

When I'm writing or really need to focus: Spa/Relaxing/Yoga music

When I'm planning: I like the "Fire on High" pandora station...lots of EPIC classic rock songs that feel like a quest is beginning.

I can't listen to podcasts, etc, while I work...too many voices in my head as it is, I can't use the competition.

I'm a really odd duck with this one. If I want to get amped up and productive I play Hans Zimmer. He's scored quite a few Chris Nolan movies (Inception, the Dark Knight etc.).

I've got a collection of his soundtracks playing on loop.

It's pretty funny - when the Dark Knight mp3 kicks up my two boys immediately run to the computer. Even kids love this stuff!

Thanks for the link, Norm. I love to listen to music, positive upbeat tunes,
sometimes Tv in the background and motivational programs while working.
Since I am up all night trading London markets while learning about IM, it helps keep me awake.

I love to listen to old time radio mystery shows that I have on tapes and have wondered if there was anything online or radio someplace that I could hear more of it than the 150 shows I have.

      You made my day. Thanks.
