Realistic "North" for internet marketers

Hello Friends,

My name is Diego and i would like to share a story that i think might serve as great motivation to up and coming internet marketers.

I worked for about 5 years as a webmaster and affiliate manager for a company based out of Miami Beach, FL.

Before that i was a touring musician, which was something that i LOVED to do, but the struggles really did out whey the good things.

Those that know have have classified me as a-typical, strange, freedom loving etc.

Those labels i bring up basically to kinda paint the picture of how much i abhor the idea and reality of working for someone else. Working for someone else is synonymous with conforming, something i just did not get the pleasure of having in my DNA.

Those 5 years i worked for that company, really left me drained, edgy, and in pretty much a constant state of stress that simply did not go away.

I was able to automate that job by using outsourcing, much like its recommended in Tim Ferriss's book the 4 hour workweek.

I did this with the goal of being able to focus on internet marketing and hopefully be able to get rid of the job entirely and travel.

Much to my dismay, i spent a lot of time (not money since ill be honest, im great at finding every course out there for free, i hope i don't get condemned for that and that my honestly is appreciated) in trying to learn, but the info overload got the best of me, and it all went downhill from me as far as self esteem.

I consider myself a prototypical alpha male, and i must repeat how hard it is for me to just go ahead and "work" for someone, im really allergic to that concept i think…

I threw internet marketing down the toilet think it was a gimmick that capitalized of people that have the dream of REAL freedom of time.

I started to focus on import/export of weight loss products and other supplements, which led me to deal with clients in Colombia.

One thing led to the other, and i decided to move to my new home Medellin, Colombia.

I cannot begging to tell you guys how much of a paradise this place is.

Beautiful women, if you generate dollars ITS CHEAP, the people are so wonderful, you WILL NOT miss the USA when you come here, quite the contrary, you will feel you wasted your time up there.

To give you an idea, i rented this place for 1.8 million Pesos per month (USD$945.69) http://goo.gl/jZH0O

I get sport massages for $12.00/hr

Cabs rides are about $2.00 - $5.00 on average, so the need for a car is completely nonexistent.

The place is SAFE. In the last 10 years Medellin has turned into one of the best cities in Latin America together with Panama City, Panama.

So where do i want to go wit this??

I currently re-started my online marketing efforts, but in a much more realistic manner, and the fact that living expenses in Latin America are so low, REALLY helps the cause.

Why??? for one i believe humans need to pamper themselves for sakes of releasing serotonin into their blood stream (the satiety neuro-nutrient) this effect occurs in the body when you eat, have orgasms, get massages etc.

In the states, its SO unaffordable to get a massage for example, something that is so simple yet does wonders to make you feel good, and when you feel good, it just reflects on your live's efforts, be it internet marketing, creating an ideal lifestyle etc. When you are all banged up, with back spasms from sitting in an office all the time, i believe its TOO hard to succeed.

You need some sugar in that life, in order to go to battle with your chest up.

Right now im back in the States visiting family, and i have realized how STRESSED and how much of a pedal to the metal culture this is. You add up high cost of living, and its just a recipe for disaster.

I offer this post for all of those that are interested in moving to South America to cut costs, i have developed lots of techniques that i would like to share in order to build a reputation on this wonderful forum.

I am in the process of creating courses for this very type of lifestyle, but i would like to share my knowledge 1st and see what you guys think.

I can help you out as far as how to best learn spanish, recommend free worldwide ATM bank accounts so you can have access to your dollars anywhere. In Colombia for example you can buy your groceries online, and get them delivered for $1.50.

I really think i uncovered an alternate reality by connecting US based internet marketing (generating income in a strong currency is key, be it dollars, pounds, euros) and living in Colombia.

Note, this is all doable in pretty much every country in Latin America except Cuba and Venezuela (Cuba is well, Cuba, and Venezuela has currency exchange control, so its a pain in the ass to get your dollars into Bolivares. Im from there so i know.)

For example, Peru is even cheaper than Colombia. Im thinking of heading there next (Lima) but im also debating if i should go to Rio de Janeiro Brasil (Brasil is a bit more expensive though, but cheaper than say Miami, FL USA)

To your international success, education and cultural expansion.

Best,
Diego

What you are doing sounds like a classic example of "geoarbitrage", an activity that will probably become more popular as communications technology improves and the world generally shrinks.

I would love to know: what is your total monthly expenditure, on average? Also, what is the quality of your internet connection? Lastly, what are your favorite parts of the Columbian culture/lifestyle?

If you're interested in reading from a person in a similar situation to you, I would check out Maneesh Sethi's blog. He similarly leverages the power of the dollar to travel the world and live richly in the process.

    Hi Diego,

Congratulations, I hope you keep growing in life and in business in your new paradise

I think similarly it was my allergy to working for other people that pushed me to setup for myself - I had 9 different jobs in 12 months in the year before I finally quit to "do IM" full time

I also just moved abroad, now living in Indonesia, again, for less than $1000 a month - with beautiful girls, a paradise beach, surfing, parties, interesting people, amazing food.. I'm beginning to wonder why I didn't do this 2 years ago - I'm spending less for living this amazing lifestyle than I was in the cold in England

Keep it up, loved reading your post and hope this next year is huge for you both financially and lifestyle wise.

    Dan
