Habits of highly innovative and creative people

I have since learned that creativity is more about psychology than intellect, and there are no secrets to being creative. Actually, there is no such thing as "being more creative", you are already a creative being.Your mind is creating all sorts of assumptions, self-imposed constraints and self-limiting inhibitions. We can remove these assumptions just by being in the moment; start doing, and stop thinking.

Here are 5 habits found in highly innovative and creative people:
1. Persistence
Innovation involves more than just great ideas. We need faith, hard work and a laser sharp focus for the end result to keep persisting for our vision in the face of roadblocks. We tend to see the end result of a creative idea in awe, but what we don't see are the actions, hard work and persistence behind the scene to make the vision a reality."Invention is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration",-Thomas A. Edison

2. Take Risks & Make Mistakes
Expect that some ideas will fail in the process of learning. Build prototypes often, test them out on people, gather feedback, and make incremental changes. Rather than treating the mistakes as failures, think of them as experiments. Instead of punishing yourself for the failures, accept them, then take your newfound knowledge and put it towards finding the best solution. Live up to your goal of producing the best result, but understand you might hit roadblocks along the way."I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."-Thomas A. Edison

3. Writing Things Down
Many innovators and creative people keep a journal to jot down ideas and thoughts. Some keep a sketch book, scrap book, post-it notes, loose paper. They all have a method to capture their thoughts, to think on paper, to drop their inhibitions and start the creative process. Leonardo Da Vinci's famous notebook was purchased by Bill Gates for $30.8 Million dollars.

4. Find Patterns & Create Combinations
Ideas come from other ideas. Did you know that Edison wasn't the first one who came up with the invention of the light bulb? He was the first to build a workable carbon filament inside a glass bulb, that made light bulbs last longer. You can increase your exposure to new ideas, look for patterns and see how you can combine ideas to improve upon existing solutions.

5. Curiosity
Many innovators are just curious people who are inquisitive, and like to solve problems. Practice seeing things differently. For example, When seeing the solution to a problem, ask yourself, "What are some alternative ways to doing this?". Ask a lot of questions and challenge the norms or existing methods.

Absolutely right! most innovators take an existing idea tweak it, improve or change it, skilfully hide their sources and then make it their own.

One suggestion also is to incorporate "nothing" into your problem solution sequence...try to solve the issue using all the ideas and resources you have and really dive into it...and when you're really wrung out, just put it aside and do something else. You'd be surprised at how the subconcious seems to keep working on its own and a completely unexpected, yet incredible solution will pop into your head. It's worked for me for years...

Creative people don't need other people telling them how to be creative.

I like 1 and 5 the most. Be interested and keep attacking it. If I'm not curious, I probably won't care, and with business, you need to be persistent to be truly successful.

    fire_fighther,

Initially, when I saw the title of your thread here,.....I was internally thinking,..."Oh boy,...here we go,....someone else rehashing some of Stephen R. Covey's ("The 7 Habits of Highly Successful (or is it Highly Effective?) People").....

But I was wrong!! You in fact, practiced what you preached, Brother! I like that!!

Thanks for being creative yourself, and compiling your own personal combo of what works for you, fire_fighter.

I gotta say,...I personally resonate with #2 and surprisingly #3 the best......

#2, because Lord knows, that in my years of playing in this great IM arena,.....I've frighteningly taken the "Big" risks,...and swallowed the "Big" disappointments,.....but I've also assessed the moderate & common-sensical risks and enjoyed the ensuing rewards.

The biggest challenge for me with this one, was in accepting the risks, and 'losses'......
I totally took those to heart and was constantly beating myself up as a "failure"!

Little did I realize that we in fact need these "failures" in order to Succeed!
I only saw these Failures as an "I'm not good enough" internal message,.....and wasn't looking for the lesson(s) in them at all!

Man!,..If I only knew back then, what I know now! Freakin' 20/20 vision, man! LOL!

Just learn those lessons quick, and minimize your 'losses', as your 'Gains' start to build and completely obliterate your "failures". Just keep goin.....You will go farther and faster than you could ever imagine!

As for #3,.......writing things down.....Geez,...now with all the smart phones and smaller tablets,.....it almost sounds obsolete to actually "write it down". (Although you can still do that with the stylus pens on most phones still)....

But anyways,.... This is the one "success habit", if you will, that is probably the most underrated, yet I'd venture to say, also the most powerful of habits, that I've seen listed in the various "Success Habit Lists" ever published.

Again, looking back as far as middle school, thru high school, and college,... As many dreams and visions and aspirations that I've had growing up,......the ONLY ones that actually came true to life in actual physical form,......have been -- honest to goodness -- the only the ones that I actually wrote down in detail, on paper!

    I'm dead-serious!!

It was kinda haunting to run across a handful of these "dream lists" that I had in one of my notebooks that I kept at my Mom & Dad's house just recently......

I couldn't believe that I had actually written these "goals" down so long ago,..and at such a young age,..just knowing nothing!.....none of this Law of Attraction shtuff, or any Natural Mind Science Laws theories, etc...!

And yet,...as sure as I'm an active, pumped-up warrior member in this awesome Warrior Forum with you guys,..... Every stinkin' one of my hand-written goals had come true!...Every single dang One!! WTF?!?!

Needless to say, Fellas,....I've already gone back "Old School" and have already been writing my goals and gratitude logs in separate notebooks, ever since discovering this "secret"....

...And my 8-year-old daughter does the same thing, ever finding out what happened to my lists! I freakin' Love it!!! LOL!!!

(Maybe there's something about getting that aesthetic, visceral "connection" between your untapped Unconscious Mind,..to your Physical Mind,....the way your brain connects to your physical arm, down to your hand holding your pen,..and unleashing your flood of thoughts onto that blank canvas.....)

    Whaddya think?

Cheers Y'all! Thanks for starting such a great and insightful thread here!

Let's keep in touch! I like the way y'all think in here!

    You're Absolutely Welcome, mitchellsmith!

I can read all the books and theories and shtuff about any idea, tactic, dogma, strategy, etc..I want,....but until I actually hear and see and read about someone else's OWN 'creative' and deep personal experience with 'it',.......Only then, can I really, really 'know about it.

That's the only way I've found myself to learn and absorb and pick up these awesome gems in life, is through hearing/reading other folks's own personal experiences with it.

It's all about being authentic and genuine.

    Lessons,....Respect.

    Thanks Again!

The Best is yet to come.........

Natural curiosity, or as I refer to it a "burning need to know" has resulted in many success stories.
