Do You Have a Written Plan & Set Goals/Objectives

"Few people take objectives really seriously. They put average effort into too many things, rather than superior thought and effort into a few important things. People who achieve the most are selective as well as determined."

Author of The 80/20 Principle

This is really appropriate for people trying to make money online working from home.

It isn't just about how much or how hard you work, it is also about having a plan, setting goals and having objectives and then to take action on the important things.

I think that is one of if not the biggest issue that newbies face.

      Focus is very important.

You have to remember, this is a business like any other.

    Great quote.

But I do want to combat against planning too far ahead.

Sometimes if you plan too far ahead, you won't be innovative or allow new ideas to soar.

I think it's important to plan, but you shouldn't dedicate your entire life to it. Things change in society, life, markets, constantly and we need to take that into consideration.

But again, wonderful quote and I agree that you should set goals (even super small goals) and be dedicated to achieving them. Just always give room for innovation and new ideas.

I agree. But also plans can be flexible, but your still have to have some kind of direction.

This is why offline businesses have business plans and they get looked at and adjusted on a regular basis.

It is really amazing when you think about the 80/20 rule. That means 80 of most of the things people spend so much time on is really not moving them toward their goals.

Hopefully, a good plan can help you avoid that.

I never heard of the rule or read the book.

But I have told people that only 20% of their time is probably invested in actually doing something.

So when they think they've been working for 5 hours straight, they may have only actually worked for 1 hour and screwed around for the rest.

I have a notebook (now several cause I use up all of them) that I write all my ideas in. Then when I come back to them a few days later it makes it much clearer to see if they make sens or not - helps to keep me on track.

But one more big issue I faced earlier, hopefully past it now, was sticking to the plan when it's NOT working. It's all about changes, adaptation as well as determination and structure.

I have boxes full of notebooks...way back when I was preparing to open my first business offline, I started writing to do list, short term plans, etc. in notebooks and dating it. I then would check things off, date them and make notes about meetings, changes, new ideas, people to call, etc.

Not only did it keep me on track, it helped me to reach daily goals which in turn, helped me to reach weekly and monthly goals.

I got so used to doing this that I still do it to this day in about every area of life.

(Just for clarity, I also had a formal business plan for every business I ever started.)

This seems too good practically but I feel creativity is affected.

another helpful idea is to get one of those huge desk-sized calendars and make sure to have deadlines attached to those goals, i know that's one idea that has helped me is to be able to visually see what i have to achieve by a certain date on a daily basis! also having reminders set up to go off on your phone/google calendar also helps!
Yes, although the Harvard or Yale study about it that is posted all over the internet about people who set and write down goals being more likely to succeed than those who don't is a myth....the idea is valid. (The study is a myth, the idea is proven valid)

There have been other studies that have shown that people who have written goals succeed at achieving them more than those who do not.

I don't believe creativity has to be affected at all if you adjust your plan as you get more creative ideas.

However, I know thousands of people who have many thousands of great ideas that I thought any one of them could have made them rich, yet they never took action to make any of them come true.

I think you have to find what works for you. But I would suggest people try it and see how much more effective they can be before discounting it all together.

This is really nice say and many newbies ran very fast with all the tips and try to do all the things. Rather than that , if we follow one plan that will give you really succes in your life. If we do with correct plan and ideas.
Even though hard work is not an important, that is a part of the success.

I agree, work will be required however, I have found when I have a plan and am working to a set goal then what I am doing doesn't seem so much like work.

I always have said, "love what you do and you never work a day in your life".

I would even tell my employees that if they didn't love coming to work everyday then I encouraged them to find something else to do.

Life is too short to be doing something with the majority of your waking hours that you do not enjoy.

No, the only time I write things down is when I'm brain storming and don't want to forget anything due to short term memory, or important things, like passwords and usernames. For goals, it's all in my mind. Why? I don't know; perhaps it's because if I write it down I'll see it so often that it won't add to the motivation and the note will only "Be there".
