What difference does a coach make?

Hi All,

Looking for feedback from anyone who has worked with a coach or mentor in IM. Not a video series with some level of support but one to one direct interaction to take your business to the next level.

Part of me says the IMers on WF must have more than enough resources available here. There's certainly plenty of great free and paid for advice and products available on the forum.

But I just wonder - does it make a difference?

If so, what's the biggest impact? Mindset, technique, focus, connections? Something else?

Would love to hear your views, experiences, recommendations, alternatives, even pitches! Might make an interesting debate!

The sales coaches I've worked with (and still do) have had direct and immediate results on how successful I am. No question.

I've found coaches to be very helpful when it's a personal one-on-one service. When you're paying for it, you're going to be much more attentive.

@1luckyman there are many advantages you get from working with a coach directly over finding resources on the internet (warriorforum included in this). I coach business owners to work in a more optimal way and a number of them say that it is having the time to formulate a tailor-made strategy that makes coaching worthwhile for them.

When you work with a coach, they are able to spot cracks in your thinking that you may have overlooked. For example I was working with someone who was seriously thinking about putting money in advertising his services in a local online 'yellow pages' site.

However it was through us talking that he realised that the majority of his currents clients came from networking and was actually pretty skilled at building connections, so doing a 'yellow pages' ad would not be the best use of his time or money.

There are certain things, because of your cognitive bias and neurological filters, we are not aware of but can affect the day to day running of our life. A good coach will be able to bring this into focus so we can find a way of working in a more optimal way. You will not be able to do this by finding resources on forums etc.

There is also the case of accountability, both in money you invest and having to check in regularly. If you invest money in a coach, you'll want to get results to make it feel worthwhile and as you have to talk to your coach regularly it can motivate you to be productive.

A coach does not have to be an expert in what they are coaching in; The magic of coaching is the questions they ask and the way they will get you to think in different perspectives so your potential is fully realised. Mountains of research show that the 'you need to do this, you need to do that' type of 'coaching' rarely works and doesn't develop you as a business owner.

The coaching experience is about developing YOU and is an opportunity to challenge you in ways you might not extend to if you were going alone.

Aaron - thoughtful and clear breakdown. Thanks - obviously the focus here is IM. So even if you are comfortable coaching in an area which is not your direct specialism I can't help feeling people would expect to get more from someone who's been there and done it - even if only because of the value they can add through knowing first hand what can work.

However, I have heard that IM Gurus who coach tend to try to clone their own business model which is fine if that suits your style and personality.

      Thanks again for the input.

Having been a coach on other aspects of business not necessarily IM, I can tell you I think the biggest thing is accountability.

Most people can follow instructions but they need someone to make sure they hit targets and don't get hung up on the unimportant things.

Also, it is nice to have someone to contact immediately if you have a minor question or snag in your progress.

I think that a coach or mentor is something that all successful people seem to have and claim to have at some times.

It's a two way street with me. I have mentors and have those I coach and mentor. Most not paid at least not directly. I have a paid coaching call Tuesday but a free one today and a paid one tonight.

Out of all the benefits of being or doing coaching, the one that means the most to me, and I push for with those I work with, is accountability. If you do not have some one to help in that area most coaching and training is useless.

You can't hold yourself accountable because your inner person (man in my case) is basically a crook!

I tend to lie, cheat and steal from and to myself!

@1luckyman yes because sometimes that business model is all they know and if you fit that mould you may be successful.
When you are being coached it is about finding what works for you based on all your others commitments and responsibilities in your life.

I have seriously been considering getting one myself due to the sheer overload of information I have found. I relate it to my musical practices. I started out as a self taught guitarist and progressed quite nicely but having a teacher who was outside of me and my ego could see exactly where my mistakes where and launched me to new heights.

      1luckyman,

When I get a coach, I do follow their model. And I do tell them that I want to follow their model because that is what they have had experience in and if they are a success in that model, then I'm going to follow it.

I don't want them to tell me they can coach me on anything actually. Because if that is so, I know they can't be successful in everything and so I won't be really getting something that they have had success in.

I think the benefits of coaching is following a model that works and the accountability. And personal coaching normally means that you pay a lot for it and that alone will make you want to make full use of it and not jump from one place to another.

I believe in reading widely and learning from everyone and even new models. I set some time to follow my coach's models and yet also am open to learning from other people's models.

If you wanted to succeed, get a person who's been done and done it, then follow exactly how they did it. I believe in this. This is where coaches came in. They can be a source of very good information and instructions for you to get to your goal. You can do it yourself without an aide of a coach but, that is the hard way of doing it.

It really makes sense to hire a coach IF you are ready to push yourself to the next level. I believe that if someone is not true to himself then he won't make much progress even with a new coach.

    Hello,
I'm still hoping to find a direct mentor, but I know that just from being on a membership site with a complete video series had tremendously helped me. If I can land my first JV and have dozens of product ideas that I'm starting by just being apart of an interactive membership site, I can only image just how helpful it would be to have a direct mentor.

Coaches/Mentors are very disciplined and have experienced alot of the problems that newbies go through and steer them away from them.

They can help us against catching the SHINY OBJECT SYNDROME.

Also they have achieved alot of success in their niche and they offer a structured programme to follow as opposed to a DIY style programme which many or may not work in the long run.

I've had different types of coaches..ones who just give you a bunch of videos and pdfs and then say email me if you have any questions.....these are not the most beneficial types of coaches.

Also, I've had ones who give you one-on-one coaching..these are the most beneficial to me.

I've found that the most beneficial coaches are those who are successful at what you want to achieve.

Now, it is possible to gain some benefit from coaches who have not had success in your desired discipline, yet they are well read in it, however not the same as those who have walked the talk.

I asked a question to a warrior about his coaching wso and it turns out that his wso is about coaching you to be an internet marketing coach...and as he put it....without you having any experience!

This is not the preferred type of coach, imho.

Thanks all - common themes seem to be accountability and guidance. Also very interesting is the statement from Old Dog that a coach or a mentor is something that all successful people seem to have.

This makes it seem more like a continuing level of support rather than a one- off or even a fixed period coaching programme.

Still open to further thoughts or specific recommendations!

    Thanks to all.

    Stay Lucky!

Hi 1Lucyman, I had the priviledge to take a video marketing program where a coach, called me once a week and personally helped me through the program. It really made all the difference in the world to me. He helped me stay accountable and on track, even though I had time restrictions. Probably what helped me the most, was that I was talking to a real live person who earned $250k a year. I have a new site up and I feel like I owe him a lot. It can get difficult out here with no one to talk to. I have another coach that I can email daily for questions and support and that helps out too.

I wish I could get a mentor to guide me that would accept me to pay him back once I start making money with his methods or teachings... Unfortunatly I was never able to find a succesfull marketer who would be kind enough to give some of his precious time and agree to be paid later... Any way, I do understand that most successfull warriors didn't get that chance and made their own succes themselves from scratch... That's why I am not giving up on my IM dream and keep working hard! But I'm still hoping for some help... They say, if you don't ask, you won't get!

You hire a dentist to fill a cavity, even though you could probably do it yourself.
You hire a mechanic, even though you could probably fix the car yourself.

As a coach, I can tell you that there are three reasons you will be more successful with a coach than without:

1.) accountability- a good coach will expect you to hit your marks.
2.) neutrality- a good coach is only interested, but not emotionally invested in your success, unlike you.
3.) expertise- you are a product of only your experiences. A coach is the product of a multiple of experiences equal to his/her own + all his current and past clients.

to me the biggest benefit of a coach would be focus. There are so many directions to go. ..........where to go-where to go??
If you focus-it can happen. I own an automotive repair business. This is how I operate, and I have been successful for the last 6 years.

I find a lot of the time when I am working with business owner (and if you are an internet marketer you should be considering yourself a business owner) It is rarely the knowledge they need help with.

What they need help with is someone who can help them focus on what is necessary to make use of the information they know and be held accountable for creating something worthwhile.

You may have a model from someone who has been really successful, but if you sulk for days when something goes wrong, if you browse constantly online and find yourself putting off work you are going nowhere....THIS is why a coach is invaluable.

Yes. This has caught my attention. I have also noticed this. People have the knowledge; more of it will not necessarily add significant value. They need something else to kick them into consistent action and visualizing their goal with excitement.

Agreed - everyone from time to time needs focus. But how does one focus? Sit down, get a pad and pen and prioritize what you are going to do first and last. do not waiver. Do not browse online. Stay on task and get it done. This is the only way to succeed.

I agree. If we were able to do everything on our own - there wouldn't be schools, or universities. The teachers / coaches / mentors are there to help you get it, get it right and get it done.

    Hard to say honestly.

I have a coach. He has helped me. But it is tough to say if he has really provided me any insight I couldn't have found on my own or if he has given me a bunch of fluff.

Either way, I have one and things seem to be moving in the correct direction.

    Opulent,

I think it's a bit of a generalization to say most coaches are like that. I'm sure there are many out there, but here are also many who are successful. It's more common to find people who release WSOs or guides or videos who have not been that successful. But yes, it's true that there are coaches out there that shouldn't be coaching. I've even seen courses being released that teach newbies how to be a coach. I think ethically that's wrong.

But there are some good coaches out there. I have some good coaches who know what they are talking about. So for those looking for good coaches, do your research. When you find a good coach, it's well worth it.

I have marketing mentors, but I have not worked directly with a marketing coach.

In my opinion, the value of a qualified coach is in the focus and inspiration they can provide. They will help you improve your strengths, strengthen your weaknesses and stay focused on your goals.
