7 Tips for staying focused

1. Make a checklist - it shows you where you are, how much you have progressed, and what still needs to be done in order to achieve your goal.

2. Set a schedule - the quickest way to reaching your goal is to create a schedule for it and stick to it.

3. Make it a habit - It is not enough to simply make a schedule. You have to turn it into a habit. Treat it as an integral part of your day that you absolutely cannot miss.

4. No excuses - It is critical that you do not allow yourself any excuses. If you do, then the excuses will never stop.

5. Eliminate distractions - Before you even start working, you should start by eliminating all possible sources of distraction.

6. Meditate - Many studies have proven that meditation techniques and breathing exercises are helpful in clearing your mind and improving your focus.

7. Take a break but time it - Sometimes you can get a little burned out if you have been working too hard. When this happens, its okay to take a break from your work schedule. Of course breaks cannot last forever so make sure that you time it as well.

Let me know what you think. What would you add? Can't think of anymore.

Thanks for these 7 Focus Tips, MartinK8!

    I totally Dig it, (and actually practice it)...especially tips 6 & 7!

Just to add to your list,... what's helped me personally tremendously well with "focusing"... is the daily & consistent use "mantras" and "mantrams".

Don't know what they are?...or what the differences between the two?

Shoot,...there's a great write-up by Peter Kelder on this, that I wouldn't do justice to, if I were to even attempt explaining it here.

I'll post it on my blog...it's too long for this space.

Or,...just shoot me a message,...I'll get it to ya.

    Cheers...

    Respect.

    Hi Martin,

Is there room on the list for exercise daily and eat good food ?

Not much point in being disciplined and reaching your goals / dreams and finding that you have turned into a depressed, overweight slob.

Take good care of those that you love.

I second that, your body is a machine take good care of it diet and exercise and it will take care of you.

Sir Richard Branson has been quoted many times talking about exercise and productivity how they are intrinsically related.

When you start to exercise regularly you start to notice that your thoughts start to clear up or that you suddenly have more focus.

At least I have noticed that, when I jump on an elliptical.

Yes nice tips here. I used to need that but at the moment I'm so focussed, it has become natural. I still need checklists though.

Ever find yourself having a million tabs open in your browser and on the wrong websites when you should be focusing on work instead? There's this extension/plugin for chrome (it could be available for other browsers too, not sure) that's called StayFocusd.

    Works wonders for me.

Yes, taking breaks with timing helps staying focused.
In fact, one of the best methods I've learned is to work in very short bursts of time by breaking tasks into small chunks.

Using "the pomodoro technique" greatly supports this. This is when you break down tasks into 25-minute intervals with 5-minute short breaks. Then after 4 "pomodoros" you take a longer break (15-20 min).

There are plenty of free apps that support this timing, I use the "focus booster".

I'm going to vote for "Eliminating Distractions" as the most important for focusing. Whether it be too many things to research online, the TV, or shiny new toy syndrome, eliminating distractions is a big one.

Great list of tips. Taking a break is one of the best pieces of advice. Just get away from your desk for a few short periods throughout the day!

Get out from behind the computer regularly. Staying in front of the computer can lead to burnout quickly, so be sure not to neglect your family and friends!
