time period to learn PHP language?

what is the time required to learn PHP language? i have an on site job, i want know alongside of my job should i go for Php language ?

What are you trying to program? Websites to do something functional? Applications for the web? What is your experience in programming or web design?

For web designers or non-programmers (knowledge of CSS, HTML, etc) - should take a week or two to learn the basics. And a few more weeks to built a basic PHP application.

I recommend going to sitepoint and getting Kevin Yank's latest PHP/MySQL book

no i have no past of webdesigning or anything.. but i ve lil knowledge on html, andi never tried that css thing, i have heard of PHP from my IT expert friends, they have even recommended me PHP instead of other languages, but the thing is what time period is exactly required? months or years to learn it if basics i learn in weeks?
