Are You A Leader? Or A Follower?

Just read this article and thought it was great!

Give it a read, Why Some Human Brains Become Leaders, While Others Followers | Brain Blogger

If you're too lazy..here's a powerful paragraph:

People who are open minded to experience new concepts or procedures and who are exposed to more rich information sources such as print, television, news media, internet, seminars and interactive conferences -- are able to build more rich and dense neural networks and hence reveal themselves as natural leaders. On the other hand, people who are averse to new models, metaphors, information, concepts or interactive discussions, remain as followers.

Leaders have a natural disposition to cultivate and maximize such constructive and reflective intelligence by indulging in meta-cognition, reflection on specific thinking strategies, seeking social opportunities for sharing of challenging ideas and optimizing physiological intelligence by choosing to exercise, eat only healthy food, and live in conducive environment which allows adequate light, fresh air and no distractions.

I like that article. Have you even taken an assessment or a work related assessment where you are tested to see what your personality type is? Those tests are good and a nice way to test your way of thinking. Are you a worker bee or are you an A. I like the worker bees. I am a heavy type A from tests results to my own wanting. I want to captain my own ship.

It's a good read. To become a leader is a matter of choice. To become a follower is a matter of choice, too. Humans are designed to have the ability to be transcendentalists; to go beyond human perceptions Some choose to become followers because they don't want to go 'beyond' the boundaries of an average human perception.

Being a leader does not mean you have to be smart and does not mean that you have to outsmart other smart people, you have to be "infuential".

Sometime it is, sometime it's not. Because too much infomation will let you die. ! But if you can analysis which one is good which one is not, then it will be great.

There are times I'm a leader and times I'm a follower. It depends upon the area. The key is to know when to be which one.

I like the article and incidentally I'm writing a book on "Moving from Managing to Leading" focused at organizations and another one focused at individuals.

This article gives some interesting elements to also consider.

I want to toss on one thing that I find very interesting about my experiences.

When I was young.. I thought I was a follower.

As I grew up, that completely changed.

I organize communities, teach, do public speaking, and I've found that a lot of people have started to follow me over the years in many different areas (especially gaming & motorcycles).

The most interesting thing to me though... I only follow a few people. And even so, I still debate with many things they say.

From that.. one of the great ways to become a leader is to debate. To show that you have an opinion and to not just listen to everything someone says and believe it.

I have always believed that a great leader must be a great follower first. If we recall history, the worst leaders never knew how to follow. Even in the Bible, the leaders like Joshua who lead his people to the promise land followed Moses first for many years. What leaders should learn from great followers are they are loyal, obedient, humble, and they understand their role. Those are the values essential for a great leader, too.
