Small tips on how to Organize your work space and clean virtual clutter

Either way if you are starting out in IM or you are a long time in this business you need a proper organization system so you can keep up with all the work load.

You need a system that works. You need to get rid of all the clutter on your desk and on your computer as well. Good organization can free your mind and make you more creative with your work since you will be more focused on your work instead of meaningless things.

Organize your desk and keep only the things that you will need on a daily bases. No need for keeping old files and documents that you didn't look for months or years. Use your office desk only for office and work. This is a rule for your computer as well, everything that you do not use or don't need either delete and store somewhere where it's not affecting your work every day.

Make a short TO - DO list by your side and keep un-checking things as you go trough your day. Make a to do list at the end of every day for the next work day.

When it comes to your computer, if you can use the work computer only for work, do not install any games on it or download movies that would be a way to go.

Use Mind maps and Google Docs as well as Office docs to keep track of your work. Keeping your work organized is one of the most important things that you can do each day. I know that feeling when i wake up in the morning and i have ton of things to do but don't know where to start. That's why i started creating a to do lists. Keep in mind when you plan on what to do tomorrow or maybe you are planning a whole week ahead (which i do not recommend since this is a long time and a lot of things can come in between) you need to prioritize and keep the most important things on the beginning of the list. This is the most common problem that people are making they are leaving the most important and hardest things for last when they should be doing them first.

"An organization's ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage". - Jack Welch

Even if you are working at home you should set up working hours for yourself so it doesn't interfere with your personal life, that way you will be fresher for the next work day. There is also an exception to this rule and this is when you have important projects that you just have to do. Then i strongly advise you to finish all your work asap so you meet up goals and keep everything on time.

Well Said, I am a terrible example. I mostly sit at my couch in the living room with my wife while she does her thing on pinterest. I do have a white board at home to keep track of all my contacts and to dos, and appointments, but everything is centered around my computer. I use a nice excel sheet that keeps track of everything I am doing in my business from leads, traffic stats, keywords conversions, blog topics that needs to be written and much much more. For me I have to mainly have everything on the computer.

I hear you. Sometimes it's really hard to focus and concentrate. I was that kind of person that until it's really really important i wouldn't get my ass of the bed. Now i changed a lot of things. The main thing to understand it to treat this as a business, then the things will be easier.

I have been studying copywrite of late and several times I have heard the argument of having a messy desk as opposed to a clean one.
Why? Well, the argument that if your desk is clean when you come in to work, then you will go ahead and have that extra cup of coffee or peruse your favorite news site or forum.

But if your desk is messy, with all of last nights work laid out in front of you already, you are more likely to jump right in when you sit down at your desk.

That seemed to make sense to me but I haven't split tested it as yet

That depends on what you actually do. If you work is mainly done online then all that clutter on your desk will just make you procrastinate and will draw you off from your main work. This is just my point of view.

Yeah the short to do list, for the next day, is crucial. You get so much more accomplished during the day when you make a list beforehand and then simply go down the list and check things off as you do them. Simply but effective.

Exactly it's really easy to do but it means a world when it comes to organization.

I've just started implementing some of these suggestions. One thing that has really worked for me has been making the very last thing I do in a day creating a to do list for the next day... and the very first thing of every day reviewing that list.

Guys, check out Rescue Time. It's not one of those invasive time management programs, it's one that actually tells you what you've been up to all day whenever you look at it, and when you see what you've REALLY been spending your time on all day...oh man, you really start to prioritize!

I have a daily list and a medium and long term list(up to a year). Sometimes when I look at the lists it is just too much and overwhelming. I move all day and night through the lists and as soon as it seems I complete several items on the list, I add more things "to do".

Sometimes it seems I am like a dog chasing its tail...

Often when I have been working on the computer all day and doing research, I end up with shortcuts all over my desktop and then I put them into files to organize them.

Your advice is really helpful. I'll try to follow it. But sometimes I get strangely lazy, I let the time pass and pass but I just don't want to do my necessary works. It sucks!
