Misconceptions of Motivation...

Do you feel that you're unmotivated?

Do you beat yourself up for spending so much time dreaming, and not actually doing?

How long have you been that way? Always?

Let me tell you why: motivation is not what you think it is. Motivation is not some force within that spurs you into action. Rather, motivation is a reward. Expecting that you should be a motivated person is like expecting a paycheck without ever showing up for work.

You have the cart before the horse.

What you seek is not motivation, but momentum. We all know what momentum is, right? An object in motion tends to stay in motion...

Momentum is what gets things done, it is the behavioral patterns that ultimately make you or break you.

If you are spending your days struggling with this illusion of motivation, it is time to stop, now.

Start changing your momentum instead. Your brain is the most powerful pattern matching machine that nature has conceived, in large part because of the psychological reward you experience when your behavior matches an existing pattern.

So what do you do? How do you experience that psychological reward by doing the things that you know will eventually make you successful?

Well that's easy, you forget about feeling content, you forget about your fear of devoting time to something that may not work, and you take action!

By sheer force of will, you take action. You don't have to know if what you do will make money, or even make you happy.

The one thing that you can be sure of is that anything that you do repeatedly for even a short period of time will become one of those patterns that your mind locks you into.

Simply take action for action's sake, and once you have started building the mental patterns of a doer not a dreamer, you can start deciding what specific actions will get the results you want.

That is when you experience motivation, and it won't happen a moment before.

Change your momentum, and everything else will follow.

Glad to hear it! This is an idea I picked up a couple of years ago and it has really stuck for me.

It has helped me to believe that every action I take is worthwhile, even if I'm not sure it will put me any closer to that dreamy IM lifestyle it well certainly help me become a habitual action taker.

And suddenly the dream is that much closer...

Great post! Momentum. Who knew? I have never heard this before. Who did you hear about this from first or did you create it?

I've heard it from two places. One was from my boss (back when I still had bosses!), he was quoting an author whose name I don't recall.

The first place I heard it was from a hypnotherapist I was seeing because I was looking to "get over the hump" and approach the things I wanted to do with my life with more energy.

I've found this idea resonates with anyone I talk to about it, so I thought I'd post it here. Glad you liked it!

Great post Chad. Let me add one other thing I have noticed in my own life as I get older. For all of you young guys you can ignore this :-)

Quality sleep is very important. Having come from a successful sales career into full time Internet marketing a few years ago, motivation and momentum has never been a problem for me.

What has really changed is how unmotivated I am if I do not get enough quality sleep. If I get a good nights rest I have a very productive day. If I don't I tend to procrastinate the day away.

I try and take a 30-60 min. power nap everyday as well, and when I do I accomplish a lot when I wake up.

    Totally agree with this.

When i was first starting out with websites i did it for fun, then i got results, the results got me motivated and kept me motivated.

I think its all about getting validation and positive feedback. A lot of people give up because of uncertainty. They dont want to risk it if they dont know they are going to win.

You just have to kind of have blind faith and take action anyway and go for it. That and delaying gratification are pretty much the most important things in my success. Being able to re-invest what you earn + act and continue acting without the guarantee of reward.

    Good post man

Nice share, I agree a bit to some point since both motivation and momentum differs. It's some sort of What makes you going versus What keeps you going.

Great post! The joy of the process is the ultimate reward. If you enjoy the process, the "success" at the end is just icing on the cake. If you enjoy the process, you don't need any carrots.
