Beating Procrastination

Procrastination is a major problem of mine at the moment, especially when it comes to tidying up, does anyone have any links or tips to help overcome it?

    Pretty simple... Take Action, actually take Massive Action..

    and if you need motivation just go youtube type motivational stuff,
    but the first one is good enough...

    Find an accountability partner This will really motivate you to take action.

    How bad is your procrastination? Is it only sometimes where you just feel lazy and not like doing anything? Or is it all the time, to the point where almost everything becomes a problem because of it?

    Mine was so bad that my whole life was being ruined (seriously). I decided to go see a doctor and it turns out I have ADD (they call it ADHD nowadays). I've always hated meds but I was at the point where I had no other options. Doc prescribed me adderall and it really has helped with the focus.

    Keep in mind, this is my personal experience. I just want to shed some light on this topic since others might be in the same situation I was without knowing what the problem is. I know that ADHD is over diagnosed, especially in children but if your situation is very bad I would recommend seeing a doctor. If you do decide to take it, be very responsible with it. I personally don't have any addiction problems but it can make you feel like you are finally in control which may lead to you think that taking more means you can do more which is very wrong. I personally take one 10mg per day, and try to not take it on weekends so I don't build a tolerance.

    Also, a final note to the few people who think ADD/ADHD is just being lazy, I hope you never experience what it is like and I envy you. I have tried every trick in the book for beating procrastination without luck.

    One thing that I've found that really helps is meditation...even for just 10 minutes a day. Just sit somewhere comfortable in an upright position, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Every time your mind starts to wander away from your breath, just gently refocus it back to your breath without getting mad at yourself. I've found that this single habit has dramatically improved my concentration, because I've become better at being mindful when I'm wasting time instead of focusing on the task I need to accomplish.

    Another good procrastination fix (at least for those of us who tend to procrastinate by websurfing) is to download RescueTime. It's a fantastic program that runs in the background of your computer, and will tell you how much time you're wasting on various websites so that you can see the data yourself. Additionally, when you really need to concentrate on something, you can tell RescueTime to block all distracting websites for the next X minutes.

    Other things that have helped me: Stop watching TV entirely, cut back the amount of time you spend on email, and keep a "to do" list of 1-3 items per day. I also recommend reading "Getting Things Done" by David Allen...it's one of the best productivity books I've found so far.

    use a notebook: write a goal at the end of the week and break it down into tasks for mon-friday. i really think that helps me most because i don't see my day finished before i haven't filled my list

    Take action, take action, take action...envision in your mind your success or a goal you want to accomplish, think about it as you go to bed at night, then when you wake up in the morning, TAKE ACTION! You deserve whatever it is you want to accomplish, so go for it! I'd also suggest reading The Law of Attraction.

    I'd say to start off by putting up a 'priority list' every day.

    Don't abandon the list. Write 5 major things you want to accomplish that day( ALWAYS choose something you can do within 24 hours less if you worked at it.) -

    Also, be real with yourself right about here.

    Now this will only work once you also write up a monthly goal list. (Also a list of 5 things you want to accomplish within days).

    Then you take action, and start doing the things you have on your priority-5 list.

    Also, you don't want to think of a month in weeks, instead think of a month as 30 days, and count down each day including the weekends. (This will give you a much deeper, richer understanding of your time)

    Also experiment with the Pomodoro technique. I've been using it for the past one week or so and I'm getting a ton of work done everyday, I'm sleeping peacefully and feel a lot better about myself.

      Procrastination is a symptom of a problem. It usually comes from a fear of something, such as a fear of failure. The only way to truly beat it is to find out what the underlying problem is and then make a change in that belief. Once you've done that you'll remove procrastination from that area of your life.

    The most important think is to make a habit. It is said that if you will repeat something every day for 30 days, it will become your habit. So start with completeing at least 1 task on every day, after 7 days make 2 tasks etc. It should make you at least a bit more organised and motivated

    As soon as I read the title of this thread a qoute came to me. It goes something like this:

    "Successful people do what they have to do whether they feel like it or not."-I believe Brian Tracy said it but not a 100% sure.

    Every time I feel like procrastinating or doing something easier than the task at hand I always come back to this quote! Seems to help me.

    It's one of my problem also. Sometimes even though I really try to stick to my plan I tend to be doing other things (unimportant things). It's hard...Sometimes I stop doing at all then listen to a motivational song.
