Working from Home or Coffee Shop?

I find that when I work from home, I get easily distracted or become lazy and complacent....not getting anything done. However, it is quiet and allows my mind to be creative.

Working at a coffee shop is also distracting but it helps me to focus on my work and not fiddle around.

I prefer working at a coffee shop... but I also like the peace and quiet of being at home.

What's your preference?

I started working from coffee shops as I didn't have an internet connection at my apartment. That was for an entire summer and fall and it's really not fun having to buy something, even if it is a somewhat cheap coffee, just to use internet. That was a daily thing for me so my coffee budget was also my internet budget.

For me there's no comparison. Home internet is faster, stronger...it's just better. YOU need to control how much work does or does not get done. My coffee replacement is now working out when i wake up. For me a nice 1 - 2 mile run will wake me up more consistently than any coffee can. But really, how many people are willing to run at 6am everyday?

It's all about your control over yourself.

Pretty funny post. I have always worked from home. I actually am used to it now. I don't have cable tv so it is never much of a distraction for me having that temptation.

I have been curious to go to a coffee shop to work but just haven't. I just think it offers you a cool environment to be around other people. Sometimes working from home can be too quiet.

I prefer to work from the coffee shop. At home there are too many distractions, complete a simple task can take triple the time required. I like the idea to stay away from from distractions, however, I also love the lively places. When I work at home I make sure to do tasks that do not require too much to be focused.

I work from home. I just sit by the pool and relaz / get some stuff done. One thing I do is allow myself lots of time for a project, so that If I get distracted a few hrs a day it doesn't make an impact

In my experience, if I go to a separate location specifically to do work, I'm a lot more efficient. Whether it's the library, coffee shop, or even another room with a laptop. But when I'm in front of my main computer where I also play games, surf facebook, etc, it's really hard to get out of "distraction mode." The ideal situation for me would be two have essentially two offices! Might seem a bit ridiculous but I think you get the idea.

  • Hi butterballs8,

I set aside a four hour minimum block of time every day to do my work. No compromises. Right now I do this 7 days a week. I enjoy the shortened work period and shut myself in my room with the advisement not to disturb me during this time.

Because I am very committed to do this work with determination and focus, only mini distrations are allowed then it's back at it.

Nope. I'm pretty much a homebody anymore. That's my preference. Thanks for asking.

"Hey you loitering goofballs, you buy 1 cup of coffee and think you can stay here all day? 90 minutes max please, maybe tomorrow you come back and buy a cookie, yes?"

    From the owners mouth.

With regards to where I want to work, my preferences is variety. However, if I have to choose a place to work, it will be wherever I live, ideally, in a perfect universe.

This topic makes me miss my old coffee haunts downtown, but what can I do? I got a beautiful "office" right here in a marble lined house. Maybe the marble is a "good luck charm" that I didn't have before that made me make CPA cash, ya think-LOL!?

    Working at home definitely...

It needs to be a quiet place though without distractions.

    Cheers,

This is the most awkward situation that many of us face. I prefer to work at home but there is also fear that i may get distracted by the others, so I've found it easier to work at night when everybody else sleep.

I've been working full time online from home now for over 7 years. As long as I have my daily to do list I do not get distracted I like to have the t.v next to my desk going for background noise.

Try this while you're at home ... go to coffitivity.com
and let it play in the background with your favorite music ..
that's a way to combine both home and the coffe shop background..

If I get in the distracted mood, I end up having to leave. Otherwise, if I can focus, I stay at home and work on my desk.

Have you heard of or tried 'pomodoro technique'? it is a great procrastination-killer, focus enhancer...
i work from home and since i have discovered and started applying it, i am much better at avoiding distractions.

My preference is definitely to work at home. I feel "watched" at coffee shops ;-) Home, I can relax and settle in. I have communicated to friends/family that while I am home, I am still working during certain hours which helps with distractions

Home, I can focus easily. In a coffee shop here it's hard to work 4 hours a day there. You need to pee right?

    Hey,

It does not matter where you are sitting. Stay focused. Just plan what you have to do today, put deadline and write it in your diary. Then read it in the morning and start working.

i love working from a cafe or coffee shop in winters.. Summers here are pretty hot so like staying in doors. Its harder for people marketing online to chit chat in normal life like normal people.. lol.. but what a nice thought to share..

I prefer to work in the library, because it is normally very peaceful and relaxing.
Sometimes it can be hard to work at home, particularly if you live with others.
