How to be a better parent

My advice for parents would be to stay in tune with your child's level of emotional and intellectual development and adapt your style of dealing with them as they develop. Respect your child's intelligence and show that you appreciate their opinion and actually take time to listen to what is being said, rather than simply just talking at your child.

For instance, many parents are accustomed to dealing with the very young child (3 or 4 years old) and perpetually treat the child as that level even after they get older. However, if you treat your ten year old like you did when they were four years old, you are only going to spark stubbornness and tantrums. Same goes for teens, who expect a higher level of respect than you would show to your five year old.

Take time to get to know your child at each stage of emotional and intellectual development and you will always have a happy relationship that endures the years.

Hello Jeffery. Just a quick thought about children. Spending quality "time" with them takes care of just about everything. Not giving them to the day care or the school(although that is important) but making sure that each of us as parents spend quality time every day with our children. We as parents, are responsible for what our children become, and that can not be deligated to someone else. In general ,our children become what we teach and lead them to become. I know culture plays a role but it all comes back to the parents. My thought is simplistic but I believe it is true,in general.

  • I also think Quality time is important, But you have to respect the child no matter how old. If respect is given it will be received, this goes for kids from 1 to 90

  • When taking care of your child as well you have to make more patience especially when your child did not listen to you if you scold them or he / she thinks that you are playing with them.

First let me suggest that confidence better than insecure parents combinations. While we must be attentive and docile to what we do as parents, it is always better to come to a place of trust and security, only to be still uncertain. If you are undecided and unsure take the time to find a simple set of guidelines that can be followed with confidence. Love the post as I am new to this parenting lark (my daughter is now 3 weeks old) I am just getting my head around the whole thing.

My view as I move forward is that as parents you are the two most important role models that you child will ever have. Time, patience, understanding and reminding your child that he/she is loved and wanted will hopefully lead to a happy child.

Spending time with them and as they grow older having the patience and mindset to speak to them and answer all their questions and be open to discussion is what I hope I can give.

One of the best things my dad ever did was sit me on his knee and read the newspaper to me as I got older. We had quality time together an it piqued my interest in the wider world.

Explore the potential of your children academically and in their extracurricular activities. Help them to develop their skills through supporting their basic needs. Ups and downs may occur, make sure that you have your full moral support together with the rest of the family member to lift him/her up when problem comes and to appreciate him/her much for the victory he/she may receive.

I agree with you! Also what is most important.? To become a best friend with your kid!

This is the most powerful thing that one parent can do for his child. The kids are absorbing and building there character at the age 3-7. In this period it's very important to show your child what is good and bad, how should respect the others outside and most of all, to show them love.

If you pay attention on this things, you will see the feedback of your kid in the late years.

Be a parent, not their friend - set your boundaries.

DONT push your kid too hard into things they don't want to do. Parents often focus on making their child an overachiever. If the child doesn't have passion for the activity, he/she is not going to be happy.
