How Do You Handle Uncomfortable Situations?

My mind races some but overall I remain pretty calm.

Meditation helps.

Experience helps.

For example, if a new team member of mine struggles to hit the ground running or to even get started I stressed like mad and felt so uncomfortable 4 years ago when I started coaching.

After this happening a few times I feel quite comfy if they complain or flip out. I know how to handle them and any feelings which might arise from pure experience.

Took a while to learn the lesson though

How about you?

Sounds corny, but literally taking control of the things you can control, which is your thoughts, and not letting it get to you.

Meditation definitely helps if you naturally frag out about situations, but at the end of the day its about being aware of what you think and how you react to those thoughts.

If there are things you cannot control at all, then its fruitless worrying about it

If it is something you can control, eg you made a mistake, you hired the wrong person. Just look to learn from the lesson and either makes immediate changes, or be aware of what happened so you don't make the same mistakes again.

    Don't sweat the small stuff

Not sure if thats what you wanted but hope it helps someone out there

I think this is a good example of why outcome planning is so important. I'll assume for the sake of argument that when you hired a new team member it wasn't just for overnight - you wanted someone who would be there to help develop and grow your business, someone who could help the bottom line and make everyone a bit more money at the end of the day.

So why would you get upset if it took that employee a little longer to get rolling? You could struggle with turning your employee into something they aren't supposed to be or you can appreciate that your business is a slow but momentously building process. You should've hired him for his skill and if that takes extra time to shine through then that's okay.

Or inversely, say you did hire someone to be aggressive and quick to respond to situations. Well what made you think that this person would act that way? If they didn't exhibit signs of this at the interview then you shouldn't expect it in their quality of work. If they did and they are still acting incongruent to your expectations then guess what? You can get rid of them and be confident that they are not the right match.

Breathing helps, well I guess more remembering to breathe in a conscious way. Being responsible for yourself and remembering that everyone else is responsible for themselves helps too.

But overall, I agree with the idea that experience helps tremendously. Lots of experience, in lots of life situations.

To handle potentially uncomfortable situations I breathe deeply, try to relax and try to utilize courage and patience if necessary.

      With discomfort and pride

Seriously though, this is the cusp of the comfort zone we have all and pushing on it gently and forcefully once and a while can really open you up to things you never thought possible.

For me focusing on the larger picture of my life has helped me in just about any situation I can imagine as far as allowing me to deal with things better. So in a way I suppose it's one of those seeing the forest for the trees types of thing. It happens that knowing and securing my higher purpose, or my bigger picture in life, allows me to transcend the momentary discomfort i might feel because i know it is part of something much much greater.

I stay confident and be honest with myself. Also, just accept what you can control, what you can't, and what you shouldn't even be trying to control. This usually helps eliminate the discomfort

Take time to adjust and comprehend the situation. Sit back and analyze it. What went wrong? What is happening? How can i turn this into a positive? Where can this end up in a few weeks, months, or years?

Exercise is a great way to get stress out of your system if you can fit it in at appropriate times.

I also take a shed load of natural supplements every day which help my nervous system and body in general - spirulina, garlic, cayenne pepper, ginkgo, bowel flora and fish oil capsules.
