Things I've learned while working at Starbucks...

Morning all,

Yesterday I lost the vast majority of my connectivity at home (should be restored tomorrow).

So! Bundled up my laptop and went to my local Starbucks.

Now, because its approximately 728742 degrees below zero here in NJ, every time the door opened.... a blast of subArctic wind, complete with snowdogs and mooses, would come stampeding in. Still, though, I had connectivity (yay!) and I stayed there for 4 hours, getting my latest out.

Things I've learned include:

1.) Bring a blanket to cover your legs! You might be wearing a jacket which is great for upper body but wow, your legs freeze everytime the door opens. My husband showed up after some time and gave me his big MegaCoat which did great second duty as a blanket.

2.) Buy your coffee/food there. You're using their free wifi - pay for it. I ended up getting 1 coffee, 3 refills, and an overpriced sandwich. It reminded me of when I worked there after Hurricane Sandy - no electricity at my home for 10 days.

3.) Stay pleasant. No matter how other customers behave, don't add to any drama and angst! Thank the baristas for their service and appreciate your surroundings. Heck, if you didn't work there, you'd be stopped in the water.

I'll end up there again today. Makes for quite the different work environment! Did you ever run your business from a coffeeship?

For a brief moment there I thought life had all fallen out of bed and you were serving coffee's for a living.

I have worked from a coffee shop before for a change when I was purely working from home. I've even worked in my local pub which is great during the week as it's so much quieter, though the beverage distractions are a bit much for me compared to coffee.

I did it for a change of scenery though, rather than necessity. I've a small office now but I find it easier to get motivated with a drive to an office than working from home. Ironic when all I wanted when I began was to work from home.

How many do you think REALLY needed to hear 2 and 3? I AM serious, but will explain it in a funny, but true way:

I heard a guy on an AD that was selling a kit to PICK UP WOMEN speak of how hard it used to be for him to pick up women, and get work. He said that he acted like a POOR SPOILED BRAT that was there only for HIM! If people told him about a place, even if they TOLD him he had to dress up, he would go there dressed like some old stereotypical BEACH COMBER! So if the event required a traditional business suit, dress pants, and black shoes, he would STILL go there with an old worn out t shirt with advertising, shorts, and old tennis shoes! I wonder if his GREAT SECRET was just following convention, like MILLIONS have for hundreds of years! It really DID dilute his message!

As for #1, I wish you mentioned THAT before last Monday. Although obvious, I tolerate cold weather well, and am originally from California, and Monday was below my tolerance threshold. When I got to the airport, I was wondering what I would do to get to the airport and back. All was fine, but my hands and ears had no protection. It was over 3 blocks to the airport, and I predicted that frostbite would start to set in within 1 block. LUCKILY, I managed to reach the shuttle, and they brought me both ways.

But YEAH, you may HATE the company, and find nearly nothing there that you want, but it is nice to be there as someone that pays for their space and otherwise is a nice part of the job, or invisible. Some places today even enforce that in varying degrees. Many, for example, don't even want to provide a bathroom, or change, unless you are a customer. Some have rules against you sitting on chairs also.

I thought for a split-second that you'd had some business reversal in response to which you'd become a barista.

I tried, I really tried, but it's too noisy. I keep seeing a lot of college students "studying" there, with their headphones in their ears and their iPads next to them. I think they just want to seem cool because I can't imagine studying in such an environment. Especially when they grind the coffee - the noise is just unbearable.

I'd rather work from home because most people are out at work during the day (I live in an apartment building), so nobody's making any noise.

Someplace else I worked - successfully! - is at the local library.

And here's an update. I had my ankle fused back in 2012 and currently carry Home Depot inside it. I don't know if I was exposed to the cold for too long or what have you, but today was sheer hell - put myself on bedrest and hopefully tomorrow will be better!

    Life, it happens.

I've also worked at the University commuter lounge when picking up my eldest. Hugely comfortable area - released a few products during times like that if i remember correctly.

Starbucks? I'd never even walk in the door. Might as well call Monsanto and ask for a hot cup of glysophate. There are no coffee shops out here that serve organic coffee. I've worked at the library before when I've moved and it's taken a few days to get the Internet going, but never a coffee shop.

No, not for me. I like quiet so I can think or get up and walk around to the kitchen or just look out the window. I like to eat and drink coffee while I'm at my computer or just get dinner started when I feel like doing it. I'd worry about getting dressed up decently and putting on a little bit of makeup....I'll stay home instead.

I've got to start using a slow cooker for more than just keeping food the right temp for guests.
