The cat is going down. It's obvious because you can tell that the blood is pooling in it's head, meaning the head is lower than the body. Also, the stride of the cat indicates that it is not fighting gravity, as much as when it would be going up the stairs.

The angle of the head indicated that the cat is looking at something above the end of the stairs, showing that someone is at the bottom of the stairs. And the angle that the photo was taken, indicated that the photographer was standing at the bottom of the stairs, or, at the top of the stairs...while standing on his head.

There are several dust particles that are falling, in the photo. They are falling downward. To do that, the foreground has to be lower than the background.

The cat's tail is curved, caused by a bouncing gate...that would be accentuated if the cat is going down the stairs, not up.

The muscles in the cat's front legs, are tensed. They are tensing, as the cat lands on descending steps, slowing it's descent.

Therefore, the cat is descending the stairs.

I'm joking.

But the stairs have a slightly protruding ridge, that is indicating that the stairs are descending. Unless the cat is running backwards....traveling backwards through time....as part of a Quantum Physics experiment.

Okay guys. I solved it. Well my buddy did, actually

I cannot believe I did not see this myself.

One of my best friends is helping me with a leak in the roof today. He is a mechanical engineer.

We sat down for a break here in the den and I had this on my computer and showed him.

And he just pointed out something that makes it 100 percent verifiable of whether this cat is going up or down.

See if you can see it

Hint : do not just look at the Cat to try to figure this out

Once you see it , you will kick yourself . It is one of those things that it is so easy your brain is subconsciously making it more difficult than it really is

The cat is coming down the stairs -- unless those are weird steps with raised ridges at the edge of the steps. Since that would be a tripping hazard, it makes a great deal more sense that the cat is coming down the steps.

Whoever made time image may have wanted it to be one of those "half-full, half-empty" interpretations to point out what kind of person you tend to be. If so, it's a fail because the steps are a giveaway to which way the cat is going.

There's another clue as well, unless our cat is different from that one. Does anyone else see it?

Up. Look at the floor at the bottom, the angle of the wall - and the depth of the steps. It's the runner on the step edge that makes it look like he's going down - the depth vs. height of the step shows that to be an illusion, though. Those would be some narrow, short steps if the cat were descending.

The pic is extremely misleading. The run of the cat going down from behind gives a whole different dimensional effect to the stairs. Anyway - I wish someone would have taken a clearer pic of the top of those stairs - WTF is that all about? Is that wall or ceiling or what?

Then how do you explain that Riffle got it right?

I think you guys are all forgetting the most important thing we have learned here. Claude figured out why the cat was descending...before Riffle. Riffle was second..or as I like to think of it, Dead Last.

I do want to be right. And I want to be right without cheating. Everything I've posted about Riffle and beating him is a joke. I don't really need to be the first, or the smartest.

But, for some reason, a puzzle... like the cat photo, just compels me to figure it out. And it's even more important that I got the right answer in the right way.

No. For some reason, it's problems in logic that fascinate me. Unsolvable paradox's...that sort of thing. Crossword puzzles require a greater memory for words than I have, and use a different part of the brain.

When I said Puzzles, I meant more like figuring out how illusions are done, or how our/my perception may be fooled. Totally objective clear thinking is my goal. It's a work in progress.

I'm honored that you asked though.

By the way, the cat's front left foot is on the step. Nobody mentioned that. It's another clue that the cat is descending.

I think the lighting/shadows are purposely ambiguous.

Sudoku Printables by Krazydad

If you've never done one, start with the easy ones and once you realize how easy those are, go for a more difficult level. There are several levels of difficulty you can choose from.

I prefer printing them out to do offline though. They squeeze into a lot of odd moments in the day and it's good brain exercise.

There appear to be lips on the stairs. If so, this must be a picture of the cat going DOWN the stairs. There are other cues also, but this is a clear one that I think people understand. The idea is that stairs sit on top of a platform that is SUPPOSED to have a riser in front. I heard in the 70s that that was MANDATED by the US, but maybe it was local or something. Failing to have a riser can cause accidents and increase the chances for injury. Anyway, they often extend out a bit from the riser, giving the lip I spoke about. You can see it here, indicating that the photo was taken from BELOW the lips, in front of the cat.

  I don't know about that, his tail is going right, (counterbalancing) and his back leg looks like it is stepping up, so l will go with him going up the stairs!

Why is everyone calling it "he"? Is it a he or a she?

Also I think it is going up the stairs backwards.

The cat's gender has no relevance here, but for the sake of clarity and balance we should henceforth refer to it as just "The Pussy"
