Free Resources Directory for Creatives

I just ran across this web site and thought it could be of use to many OT'ers.

Makerbook - The best free resources for creatives.

Makerbook.net is a hand-picked directory of free resources: photography, mockups, graphics, textures, fonts, colors, video, and audio.

Not earth-shattering, but good to have bookmarked when you're looking for that special something for a project.

Good find Dan. A lot to go through but I'm always checking out stock photo sites.

Any ideas about sites when I want to pay for these? Here's what happens with me a lot: I'll want one bit of audio (e.g., a cricket chirp), or one stock photo, or one cartoon / clip art for part of a specific project, and I'm willing to pay something reasonable to keep it legal. I don't make enough videos to warrant paying for a monthly subscription or a pack of 50 units. What I've done in a pinch is to "sublet" from a freelancer who already has a 50-pack or whatever, but that's a bit of a pain, and ends up costing me more in time than it's worth. I wish these sites would let me pay 2x or 3x just for a single piece.

Thanks Dan, l finally got some combi van images, (it has been a nightmare to source them, and to find someone to go take some shots of some).

Shutterstock has some, but they are all Editorial use Only!

Nice one, next time Claude has a go, l am on your side, he, he!

Unacceptable, Shane. You should be on my side every time.

Ok, l will be on your side, unless the conversation goes into donut territory, then l will think twice?

Can't knock Claude's donut fetish, that will attack his reason for living, and we will likely see a "Claude's, Last Will and Testament" thread!

I hope he doesn't leave me his "Everything You Wanted to Know About Vacumn Cleaners, But were Afraid to Ask box set" or his highly prized, "Donut crumb collection"?

Doesn't exist. Do you think Claude would leave any crumbs behind?

No, l should have guessed, it was a fake donut crumb collection he showed me once!

Dammit, now l will only get 50 cents on Ebay instead of the noteworthy $3.50 l was expecting!

But l am sure that his gold plated dunut crumb collection is real, maybe l will get that instead?

David, I normally outsource stuff now, so I'm not on the bleeding edge of this stuff anymore. I used to my photos from istockphoto.com. I just popped over to their site and they're apparently owned by Getty Images. I don't know if they always were, but I refuse to do business with Getty.

Shutterstock.com is another one I used in the past.

I can't tell you anything about video or audio. Kurt runs the video forum here. He might have some answers. Steve Wagenheim creates stock music.

Thanks, Dan. But both of these sites have the minimum/subscription models of which I spoke. I'm willing to pay a premium for "one", but these sites don't cater to that.

Shutterstock has multi-image plan where you can just buy two, five, or twenty-five images for $29, $49, or $229. You just have to download your images within one year of payment. It's not a monthly model.

iStock also has small credit packs starting at 1 credit that never expire. You can figure out how many credits your photos cost and buy accordingly.

But Envato sites, also cost $40 or more for a all out licence, (well it has a 250,000 limit).

I do graphics for them on Graphicriver, but they are too expensive for photo purchases.

I use Shutterstock, and can get my images for about 33 cents each.

But l have to spend $250 and download about 25 per day!

Although if you are new, and do a search online, then you can get it down to about $200.

I have used them twice, but have had to search their entire database, (big job); so l found 2100 images for seasonal flyers, etc, and had to whittle it down to 750.

As l said big job, but it does set you up if you want to get serious about doing graphics online?

And if you use their services in the future, you can download the previous images you forgot to download in large format, or if the download didn't work, download again for free.

LOL!! Thanks; I needed the laugh, Frank. I've been dealing all morning with a client who lost many of the files that I need in order to complete his work in a timely manner.

Not much you can do for those folks. I'm someone that backsup internally, externally and off-site - 24/7. I will never understand folks that don't.

I make all of my clients backup offsite as a requirement for me to work with them. I offer to pay the $5 a month, but no one has ever wanted to appear like a piker and accepted payment.

There is only one thing I can say about that: How David Feels Right About Now!

Yeah; I have Mozy backing up my own files every few hours, myself. I'll restore a file maybe two or three times a year. Far less stressful!

I think this was a case of "too many cooks", but at the end of the day, yeah, simple backups would've gone a long way.

Crickets? Do you have a microphone? Hang it out the window after dark in the summer and record them.

    Images = camera.

I hear everyone talking about having this kind of stuff right on their phones. Seems like unless you're looking for something really unsual, a lot can be accomplished by yourself or with the help of a friend for a few bucks. So I don't really "get" spending the big bucks for ordinary stuff.

OK, so maybe a cricket chirp was a poor example; it was simply the first thing that came to mind when I was reviewing the few videos that I'd made recently. I was just reaching for something that I needed "one" of, rather than ten or a monthly subscription, which is more appropriate for someone that makes a bunch of videos on a regular basis.

On the other hand, maybe it actually was a good example. Sure, if you're doing a personal project and you have plenty of time on your hand, the mic-out-the-window approach is fine. But if I'm working, and I value my time at, say, $25/hour, and it takes 20 minutes between the time I start off with my mic and the time that I have something completely usable in Audacity, then spending a dollar (while I can be earning eight) absolutely makes sense. (Yes, yes, we could quibble about the value of the two numbers; I'm just trying to make a point.)
