What's Happening
Under new guidelines proposed by MarkMonitor and others who represent the same industries that backed SOPA, domain holders with sites associated to "commercial activity" will no longer be able to protect their private information with WHOIS protection services. "Commercial activity" casts a wide net, which means that a vast number of domain holders will be affected. Your privacy provider could be forced to publish your contact data in WHOIS or even give it out to anyone who complains about your website, without due process. Why should a small business owner have to publicize her home address just to have a website?
We think your privacy should be protected, regardless of whether your website is personal or commercial, and your confidential info should not be revealed without due process. If you agree, it’s time to tell ICANN.

What do you make of this issue fellow warriors? I really don't want my contact information to be available to anyone in the world just because I use adsense.

Wow... this is indeed a big news.

I don't think any business owner will be happy to know his personal details are readily available to the public. This cannot be implemented.

A bit of advice.... DON'T say things like "This cannot be implemented.". It IS implemented, it WAS enforced, etc...

I got the same email and wrote a very similar post. My post was deleted, so thanks for posting this!

I hate the idea that a powerful few get to make decisions about my privacy. I have nothing to hide but we live in a bad world with crazy people in it. I have several websites and pay the extra fee to keep my home address private even if I disagree that I should have to pay the extra fee in the first place.. This is just another ploy to break the Internet as we know it. The corruption is being exposed and they don't like that! This is just retaliation, nothing more.

  This new ruling comes under the label of "consumer protection" to me and I don't have a problem with it.
  
  If I'm going to sell products to people online I shouldn't need to hide behind a "privacy screen".
  
  If the personal info aspect bothers me - I can incorporate or set up an LLC, etc or perhaps use a d/b/a business name/address/phone to register domains.
  
  MarkMonitor is all about ferreting out copyright infringers for retribution. That is driven by the big money copyright profiteers... ie: Movies and Music.
  
  I don't have a problem with that, either, I guess. I've just reported two more spammers here posting "live stream latest movies".
  
  Copyright profiteers are not my favorite folks - but they'd go broke if people stopped violating copyright and trademarks, wouldn't they?
  
  My main objection to the entire story is the quote made in the first post. It's a "this will happen to you if....so go here and do this...."
  
  No, I don't join causes or sign petitions or send emails of outrage written by some person or group somewhere. I think it through and decide if this is a battle I care about. To each his own opinion - but I don't care about this particular battle.

  I use and like Namecheap, but I think they're wrong to conflate personal and commercial privacy issues. A private individual has every right to remain anonymous, but a commercial enterprise (and if your website is earning you money, it's commercial) should have to disclose identity and contact information - just as any offline business is required to.
  
  You don't need to disclose your home address - just get a registered business address. It's a good idea to include that information on your site's contact page anyway.

  Since Freelancer has decided to start spamming me, I've quit reporting spam here. If they are going to spam my inbox, why should I help them control the spam on their website? They're getting what they deserve as far as I'm concerned.
  
  And before anyone says to unsubscribe, you can't. I've tried and am told I'm already unsubscribed. Yet, the spam keeps coming. And contacting support results in exactly nothing. Not even a reply. And I didn't sign up for a Freelancer account in the first place.

  Dennis - that's odd. I was receiving some emails but was able to opt out and haven't gotten anything since. I've haerd several complaints of questions/problems submitted to help desk that were not answered at all. That's bad.

People will create an alias or false DBA and pay fees without using traceable accounts when paying for new domain names and others will offer services such as a storefront address similar to what is offered for registering a corporation in Nevada. Those who don't want to be found will find ways to complicate this. This can actually encourage fraud by having people register with false info or register with a so-called business name and then dissolve it if need be.

I am listed as owner of all my sites with contact information available.

But, I guess if you want to remain anonymous then a Delaware or Nevada corporation might come in handy
