I know. When I read that article earlier I was shocked that no one (including myself) had thought of that before.
There is a water turbine in the creek near me that powers one house and has been there since I was a kid. When I read the article that was the first thing I thought of.
I also send a message to my state governor, a couple state reps and my town that I follow on facebook with a link to the article.
In the village my family lived in in the winter when I was a kid, Ford had a plant that was powered by the Hudson river. After Ford left the village took over the factory and converted it to supply electricity to the village. To this day the village has the cheapest, most environmentally friendly electric supply in the area, possibly the state.

Water and gravity. Hmm

A long time ago I dreamed of individual home water wheels producing power as a solution to energy. But, you have to have a constant flow of course. I thought simple, water in a high tank flows down, turns the wheel/turbine and produces power. Then the water would flow into a lower tank and make its way up a wide tube to the higher tank and refill it. Perpetual, Da Daaa.

Complete and utter bull. Water finds it's own level, it does not do that.

But then a few years back, someone on a forum suggested a simple solution. We all know about sucking a syphon tube from a tank of water to get a flow out. That goes uphill but not forever, but for a surprisingly long time. The amount of breath we have to use and its duration produces quite a long term result in how much water flows.

So, he was citing those tiny little pumps that you get in water fountains that use negligible electricity to make water flow. Imagine a series of them attached , pulsing on with micro duration usage, just to produce that "suck boost" at regular intervals, connected to several tubes in your lower tank which go up to the higher one and refill it.

You may find with an arrangement like this you could run the water wheel/turbine to give some power/charge batteries etc and even able to re-charge a small battery that is running the pulse pumps. And that my friend would be a closed loop (apart from the occasional top-up with water due to evaporation)

Water and gravity is your fuel with a tiny boost of power needed to keep it going.

I only wish I had the Savvy to try and build one. You might like to tackle this Thom.

Then, scale it up.

Reminds me of the GravityLight 2 project to replace kerosene lamps with a gravity-fed system to provide a cheap, clean light source for the billion people currently without one.

Damn it.

I seriously had this idea a few years ago for a small turbine generating electricity on fresh waterlines between the street & the house.

I imagine it's not legal for homeowners since the water company is paying the electricity bill for the water pumps that create the pressure to turn a turbine. It would be hard for anyone to prove unless they started testing individual pressure on lines at the street (doubtful $$).

This could be done on a very small scale inside of a house, just like a water filter connection under a kitchen sink. Replace the water filter with a small plastic turbine, hook it up to a GFCI outlet & charge batteries for electronics.

...or scale up & connect to the main water line under the house for charging larger batteries like used for solar panels, that way it uses all the fresh water flow (washing machine, bathtub, toilets, etc...).

They've been selling these small cheap water pumps ran by electric drills for years. Just reverse the whole thing, instead of using electricity from the drill, use water pressure to turn the drill which is then connected to a battery charger (or whatever). Might have to hack the drill & remove the gears, in that case use an old drill where the battery is shot.

Lol, hook up long orange extension cords & sell electricity to the neighbors, payoff the powerwall in 6 months. Add a tiny solar panel on the roof of the house just for show, the neighbors will be scratching their heads trying to figure out how you're generating so much electricity. Meanwhile you're in the basement like Mario & Luigi running water pipes all over the place.

Seriously, I don't see any reason why that original setup couldn't work for a single home. Obviously it won't pay all the electric bill but it might generate enough electricity to pay off a water bill each month where the water is already going to be used. I pay about $500 a year for water, I'm sure others out west pay a lot more (drought).

Yeah, I do see your point. Still, if I worked the numbers, I doubt the pump costs more than $5 or $10 a month to run.

Urm, not sure if you're joking, but it's a water fountain. I remember using that very model (or something incredibly close) as a boy.

When the Susquehanna flooded four years ago, the property lost power for four days, as well as access by the only road; my girlfriend was trapped. Even though there was nothing wrong with the well itself, there's no manual override, much like what is shown in that video, to get water. Ever since, I've been trying (in vain) to find someone that can install that kind of manual handle for a contingency for just such an emergency.

My inlaws have a well.

I know the actual electric pump is in the bottom of the well & the pump is about the same diameter as the well casing/pipe. I'm not sure how that could be routed to a manual pump since there's no room to drop another water pipe into the well. Most water mains are at least 3/4" diam.

  Back up gasoline or diesel generator in case things go south again. I once lived in a house where the main entrance was through the garage. I had to break in when the power went out because of the electric garage door opener. LOL And how about a back up heat source? Wood stove? They don't sell them anymore, but that same house had a ventless gas fireplace I could light with a piezo or a lighter - no power needed.

  There are about 60 or so (maybe 80) hydroelectric power plants in the USA that do find it cost effective
  to pump water uphill to refill the reservoir while demand is low.
  
  Then you have this man made monstrosity. (I think it helps keep a nuclear plant operational.) If you click on the facts link, you will see that this man made reservoir has more concrete than Hoover and can hold about 1.5 billion gallons of water. (I'm not all that knowledgeable, I just look that way - in this instance - because the constructors stay at my hotel. Even blind squirrels get lucky.) The reservoir generates about a million a day generating electricity by releasing and refilling.

I just got my water bill today

I only pay around 140 a year. What's funny about that is my town (Brunswick) gets its water from the city of Troy. If I lived a mile west of where I am I would be in the city limits and my water bill would be around 600 a year.

Yeah, l know that water turbine systems are free energy, just as long as the water source doesn't dry up.

But l prefer magnetic systems!

The magnetic fluid system being put into old coal fired electrical stations in China, are testimony to that. And they are charging the Chinese people for free energy.

Following the herd has its price!

That was brilliant! That just goes to show you that there are people out there that see a problem and are solving it. We have ordinary problems everyday and we are probably not recognizing that as an opportunity. A solution that could help millions of people.

eg. Problem: Losing your teeth, bad breath, makes you look unsightly Solution: A toothbrush and mouthwash and a dentist. Voila!!!

I have a Mind Power coach that says that opportunities are everywhere. They are not going to stand up and shout at you or show themselves in blinking neon lights. They are just waiting to be discovered.

This post, ThomM just got me totally inspired and excited!!! I need to start seeing opportunity through common problems I experience and that others do too!
