If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it still make a sound?

If you are great at what you do, but nobody knows, are you an expert?

      You beat me to it.

      Yes, there is a sound.
      Yes, you are an expert.

      Here's a question for you.

If suddenly, every person on the planet could fly like Superman, would it still be a super power?

      Here's a question I actually thought of;

if an alien space ship landed, and they told you that they would take you with them, to show you the galaxy, and to learn from them....but you couldn't tell anyone, not even your wife...you would just instantly be gone....would you do it?

I think that question is heartless.

I am still in mourning for the turkey we lost last Thursday.

He was a friend of mine, and we had many deep philosophical discussions.....mostly about why you would want to cross the road, and why pork isn't the preferred Thanksgiving meat.

That explains why he committed suicide then.

Does "instantly gone" mean never to return? Is this a permanent trade between life on earth and life with the aliens?

My knee-jerk reply was "no thanks". I figured, wouldn't it be akin to becoming an explorer, traveling from place to place to see new things? I wouldn't leave my life now to explore the unknown on this planet. Why would exploring other planets be any different?

But then I thought about what would be different. These are beings with the smarts and technology to come here and take me away with them. I have a feeling traveling with them could be pretty mind-expanding - and although I've sworn never to return to earth, who knows what I'll become capable of in the future, where I can somehow once again touch the lives of those people I love back home.

It's an interesting question. Too bad the alien b@$t@rds only give you 10 seconds to decide.

                I remember that quote.

It was from the old Star Trek episode, "The Trouble With Riffles"

I know! I can quote most of the dialog.

We just had to make the "Trouble With Riffles" joke fit.

If you made a joke in that post and nobody thought it was particularly funny, would it still be a joke?

Sad is it not, that we have nothing better to do with our lives than to watch so many endless repeats of Star Trek shows and films that we know and can quote the dialogue. (except Deep Space 9 and Kurt)

Actually, I don't think that's sad at all. Do you watch Doctor Who? Some of the best writing anywhere. And Star Trek dialog? How can you not smile when you think about it?

In STTNG, I think the first episode, Riker says something like, "Every man at his post, to the bitter end?" And Picard says, "I see nothing so bitter about that".

In Star Trek 6, Scotty says, "...then we are all dead"

Spock says, in complete deadpan, "I've been dead before".

Star Trek had lots of good lines.

"There is an old Vulcan Proverb, And Nixon Shall Go To China" Spock.

Yes, l only watched Deep Space Nine, for Major Kirra, and the other reasonably attractive one with the overgrown, Alien in training thing in her stomach!

That show almost sent me down the hard drug route, but the war at the end made up for it!

As for Kirra wearing that chain on her ear, how can she fight the aggressors with that thing on?

Only a matter of time before something would grab that? Probably had her ear put back on more times than we can remember?

But Quark was good, well he did end up in a scene in SGA, without the mackup, so!

Yes. If everyone on the planet simultaneously gained the ability to fly, we would all acknowledge we somehow got a new super power. 500 years from now, whether we all could still fly or not, history would still tell of the day humans got their flying power.

        Here's a question I actually thought of;

if an alien space ship landed, and they told you that they would take you with them, to show you the galaxy, and to learn from them....but you couldn't tell anyone, not even your wife...you would just instantly be gone....would you do it?
        1) The adjective "super" implies special or outstanding. If everyone had that ability, it would be just normal. Following on from that question, if the laws of physics can be so easily flouted, are they still laws?

        2) Yes. But knowledge on that scale that couldn't be shared would be hugely wasteful. And, really, what's the point of knowledge if it can't be shared?

I would have said "Yes" until a few years ago. The point about it being mostly wasted, because it can't be shared, is pretty insightful.

          It's something I hadn't considered before.

          Another great insight.

I immediately think I would have to go. My curiosity would just be too strong.

But I'm not exploring this world now. Meaning I just found out I was lying to myself.

    1) Yes. Unless it's a Quantum tree which, of course, only makes a noise when someone is listening.

    2) Depends. If you're the only one who thinks you're great, you could be just self-delusional.

    1. Define "sound".

You see what happens to a good main forum post that get placed
in the Off Topic section by a moderator? The question is about
the importance of advertising, but now it comes to this section
and everyone thinks it's an off question.

    1. Yes. The creation of sound waves are not dependent on our perceptions.

I will try to be serious here.

    About the original sound.

The trick in the question is that a sound is not a sound unless it can be heard. No one hears the tree, so there is no sound.

But the real question is about what the tree makes, ears or no, an' what it will always make is the energy of the sound wave.

But that won't blow out candles unless it is way loud.

So no one wins, except mebbe the tree.

Precisely, which is why I asked for an operating definition of "sound."

This ol' chestnut has never been an argument of science, but instead, one of semantics.

It's a matter of Quantum physics.

If Shane says something in the woods, and nobody hears it...Do I still refute it?
I find myself arguing with points, nobody has made. I think it's a matter of Quantum Entanglement.....Somewhere, someone said something I disagreed with.

For the record, I have no desire to do crazy things to Claude's head.

Rest of you already fixed that in Jpeg-land:

              http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...-almighty.html

Weird thing is, if persuasion is (kinda) about imposin' yourself on people, then possession gotta be about superimposing yourself on people, which happens to Claude here alla the time.

So mebbe he is the demonic force we gotta watch out for.

I would certainly not like to possess him (unless he wants to come hoover my apartment).

In the standard possession ritual, you need a whole buncha hard-to-source stuff like holy wafers, goats, and sacred objects.

Gonna take control of ole Circumference Doom, I figure you gonna need Papa Francesco's wheelbarrow.
