I want to finally break $10k a month in 2017, it's been a long time coming and this past 3 months have been so close... Just a few 100 short. I seem to be cursed

Yep 2017 is almost here and unfortunately in some regards it will be another angle a few will be able to use to sucker the unsuspecting newbie into illusions of grandeur with the newest get rich quick scheme

True, all roads seem to lead to the sig section.

For me trying to figure out all of this BS surrounding getting a new laptop before we get xmas and a few weeks of all businesses closed, and me twiddling my thumbs, is the main one.

As for doing it now, l have almost finished a font project that might kickstart 2017, inbetween trying to find a decent laptop.

Yeah, laptops, ASUS and Toshiba are the 2 most reliable ones available, but can l find one that l like, nope, Ebay and Amazon seem to be full of the :this has everything except a DVD player" or this has everything but the screen is oversized, groan...

I went through this tit-for-tat BS when a got my first mobile phone, and after 3 month s of research almost had a mental breakdown when l finally got one.

ASUS are good as well, but the covers are vile, Toshibas covers are beautiful, but.....

I will figure these F**** out hopefully before Xmas, or buy an oversizaed bottle of Jack Daniels and go and cirl up in a ball somewhere.

Ok, Frank, to put it another way, l won't buy a ASUS, or walk into a convenient store, when the cover or top sucks, (the $1750 one has a nice top, though, groan)....

when l can order a Toshiba one, that is up there with Apple in regards to looks.

Not many options in AU, for Toshiba, but l am whittling.

Well, you could buy an Apple, get the most aesthetically beautiful machine ever built, combined with the most technologically advanced laptop in the world and have a machine that you could easily keep for 5 years, rather than have one that is ready to be thrown in the trash heap after 18 months - or less.

Do the math. If you think that PC crap is a better value, you need a better calculator. The built in suite of pro applications alone are worth thousands of dollars if you had to buy them separately.

Numbers don't lie. The only people that slam Apple computers for their costs don't understand what they are paying for and generally, simply can't afford to buy the best, No shame in that, but they shouldn't try to obfuscate by throwing out a bunch of canards. :-)

Something I have learned in all my years, is that people who are going to start something great;

A new business
Quitting smoking or drinking
Starting to exercise.
Starting a diet.
Really putting an effort in their business....

If they aren't going it the day they make that decision, they never will.

If you are putting off this huge effort until a future date. It means it's a fantasy, and you'll never do it. Never.

The act of putting of this activity until a future date, means part of you knows you aren't going through with it.

And if it was important to you at all, you'd just start today.

One thing you said a while back stuck in my mind (yes occasionally happens) If your serious about starting a business, just quit your job and get on with it.

Instantly I had the reaction, hmmm, alright for him to say, he's been self employed forever.. I have the bills to pay.

However, once you have done some groundwork and perhaps made a bit part time, you get some confidence that perhaps it could be scaled up and make you a living. That's a sensible way to do it.

However, the jump from a steady paycheck to what is still an undefined outcome is still frightening.

But the doing it means 100 percent commitment and effort straight away, otherwise you starve. Perhaps you can make it happen, perhaps you cant. Risky business. But to some, perhaps the only way to stop procrastinating.

I agree about working in a business you want to start before starting it. Get the feel. My business is in an industry I have been in for 27 years - the first 20 as an employee. So when I started mine, not only did I have the experience - I also had a lot of contacts.

One thing I can say is, I would NEVER open a business that services consumers, homeowners, etc. I am all B to B and it's great. I did some SEO/Web Design for small businesses and I hated every minute. Way more demanding and unreasonable than my corporate clients.

True to a point, but spending a few thousand for 256gigs of memory, pretty big barrier, and l agree they look nice, and have less issues, but price and limited amount of available memory.....

I have cut my stuff back to the bone and am around the 260gig usage mark, so, eventhough my brother said, (he is an apple fan) to learn how to manage usage, l don't agree.

And most Microsoft laptops out there are crap, and probably won't last any more than a few years,

But Toshiba and ASUS, would have a 6,7 year lifespan, or maybe longer.

Could be!

Doing fonts, requires very little memory, but doing the presentation for each one, does chew up the gigs.

Not including entertainment, l would use about 30 gigs a year, so, yeah, in less than 6 months l would be tripping over lack of it.

I also have about 50 flyer designs on this laptop, and some could argue that l don't need them there, and leave them on the external HDD, but l recently used one for a shortcut product display example, so if l was down at the library for example, the 1tb of memory would be a godsend.

So l mainly need it for, Photoshop work, downloading 5000x6000 jpegs or a 1 gig file does chew up the chips available power. And if l am doing a system cleanup and downloading something, then it becomes painfully obvious, that "speed is good".

True, 256 GB of hard drive isn't a big deal. A 2 terabyte drive cost less than $100.

Yes, but 2 tb would take forever to scan for viruses, and l figure that one tb, would probably outlast, (not use it all) the Laptop.

LOL - well, I have a 13 year old who constantly downloads and installs stuff for his gaming. On his computer I have to scan periodically. I don't scan my drives anymore. Everything I download gets scanned automagically.

As for laptops, I just bought a Lenovo Thinkpad with a solid state 1TB hard drive. So far it's a nice machine. The battery lasts roughly 16 hours, but I really only use it for 2 or 3 programs for my business.

I like Macs, but for what I do for a living they are not practical. All my customers are corporate/manufacturing businesses and NONE use Apple products. Some of the specialty applications I use have NO suitable substitutes for the Mac.

My daughter has a Mac though. She loves it. She's had it 4 years (college) and she's never brought it to me for issues, although just last month her hard drive completely crashed. Had to have it replaced...but stuff happens.

Right now, I have no compelling reason to buy a Mac. But as far as usage, I do get probably 4 - 5 years out of my laptops and my 3 desktops are 8, 6 and 5 years old. So I get my money's worth.

Afyer 30+ years of the Mac experience, I honestly don't think I've been missing anything on the dark side. I'm doing just fine and I have never found anything I needed to do, that I couldn't do.

Does Mac come with Mindsweeper or Solitare, As Standard!! Think of all those lost years.

Here's a thought. Both Windows and Mac have auto minor updates and both have major ones now and again, except Windows just goes ahead and does it. Mac tells you to download. Now with Windows 10 you just have a newer edition. That's it, no name change, no other Windows to come, any changes are evolutionary. Mac comes up with a new name O/S

So, in the past with both Windows or Mac you eventually get to a point where it won't support the latest OS anymore and if you want the latest, you need a new machine. So what will happen now. Mac may continue with that scenario but Windows cannot afford to make Windows expired or redundant anymore.

Perhaps both machines are now powerful to run them for years. Both Mac's and PC's far outstrip the demands of the software now so it may be years before it becomes an issue and machines break down and are replaced for latest and greatest in raw power speed and graphics.

So, perhaps Mac should follow suit with this regarding it's sotfware version becoming redundant policy.

We don't follow. We lead. You can run new versions of OS10 - only the nickname changes - on many older machines. Besides, Mac users tend to replace their machines more frequently. Not because they have to, but because they want to.

You simply 'don't get' the Mac experience and all that comes with it. It's not for everyone.

If you said that about the "Mac Experience" a few short years ago. I would have totally agreed. They could do no wrong. When Job's was alive we had the ipod, iphone, ipad and superb looking, well built and functional Laptops and desktops. All innovative firsts and market leaders. Now, with him gone they have lost their way. The iphone is still desirable and carrying what is already a cash rich company.

What has come out over the last year or so, Nooo. Did Job's have a son?

I see Job's vision clearly, take an existing batch of technology perhaps with something that already exists, and make it superlative. Clever man

The other companies had to play catch-up, and finally they are.

Not entirely true about the Mac Laptops. A friend of ours has a 17.3 inch powerbook from 2009 or there abouts. It only runs a Mac operating system up to a certain version. Thing is, if she had the money, what would she buy now since she's a graphic artist and likes the bigger screen?

As far as the software O/S upgrading is concerned, at least with Microsoft, is to keep sending out updates and keeping 10, only it checks the specs of your machine and adjusts functionality accordingly (leave stuff out that only works on newer machines). At least you would continue to have a stable, security patched O/S.

I wonder what Apple will do?

I'm sure they'll continue to do just fine, in spite of the naysayer that have predicted their demise for the past 25 years.

Like I said - nothing on Earth is perfect, but for my life and my needs, my Mac Pro is as close as I have ever come. Absolutely no complaints here, other than I may have to wait years for them to release a new Mac Pro. My machine is less than two years old. If they released a new one, tomorrow - I'd buy one tomorrow.

A man can never be too rich, too thin or own too many Macs. That's just a fact of life. :-)

In my line of work, you would find NO Mac software to handle my (and my customers) needs. And like I said in my last post - makes no sense for me to buy a Mac, install some $99 software to run my PC programs. That's like $2000 more than I would need to spend - and yes... I CAN easily afford a Mac. I'm just not a fan of throwing good money after bad.

And to repeat one of your quotes above (modified for me):

The point I can never get across is, if I spend $10k on a Mac Pro workstation, make that $50K by using it - what did it actially cost me? If a race car driver spends $1m to build his car and wins $2m in purses, what did the car cost him? It cost him nothing and made him $1m. Can that be argiued? Could he have won with a $300k car? Doubtful. Could I make what I do with a PC? Simple answer - no!

Trust me - I was about as cool as one can be, long before I bought my first Mac. Now - I'm cool beyond human comprehension. lol

You can make this statement about pretty much any business tool you could buy. I recently spent over $12,000 for software I need in my business for my customers (which have NO version for a Mac). But I will make 6 figures next year as a direct result of using this software. So I totally get what you're saying. And I think most people do understand it. I think PC people just enjoy getting a rise out of Mac users.

Again, no argument with your logic here. Also keep in mind that many folks that complain about cost probably DON'T make money using their computer.

Seriously - they are. lol If you love cutting-edge technology and find it 'cool' then there is no argument with that statement that can legitimately be made. You can choose a more mature word, other than cool, but that only changes the word, not the reality. Some people get-off on technology. I'm one of them. You can make this statement about pretty much any business tool you could buy. I recently spent over $12,000 for software I need in my business for my customers (which have NO version for a Mac). But I will make 6 figures next year as a direct result of using this software. So I totally get what you're saying. And I think most people do understand it. I think PC people just enjoy getting a rise out of Mac users.

Agreed. Mac users need to learn not to let infantilism bother them - myself included. Unfortunately, most of us feel that when you attack our Mac you have impugned a family member. lol

Again, no argument with your logic here. Also keep in mind that many folks that complain about cost probably DON'T make money using their computer.

It's not the cost as much as trying to say that the only thing you get for your extra expenditure if the 'cool factor.' That's BS and shouldn't give them carte blanche to voice their ignorance. :-)

Not ignorance. This is the "let's annoy the Mac owner" syndrome I mentioned earlier. It seriously can be fun watching Macheads get all personal and stuff. That might make me an immature douche, but I never claimed to be anything else...

It's kind of like when my fellow Giants fan friends make fun of our Cowboys fan friends - they ALWAYS get all worked up like it's personal.

Yup, I know about that. But for what I use my computers for it make zero sense to change over. I'd end up using the Mac to run mostly PC programs - so why bother? I'm not going to buy a Mac because the cool kids have them

True, but when you are using Photoshop and doing a few other things, then 16 gigs of Ram does get used and does make a difference.

Here's a thought. Both Windows and Mac have auto minor updates and both have major ones now and again, except Windows just goes ahead and does it. Mac tells you to download. Now with Windows 10 you just have a newer edition. That's it, no name change, no other Windows to come, any changes are evolutionary. Mac comes up with a new name O/S

So, in the past with both Windows or Mac you eventually get to a point where it won't support the latest OS anymore and if you want the latest, you need a new machine. So what will happen now. Mac may continue with that scenario but Windows cannot afford to make Windows expired or redundant anymore.

Perhaps both machines are now powerful to run them for years. Both Mac's and PC's far outstrip the demands of the software now so it may be years before it becomes an issue and machines break down and are replaced for latest and greatest in raw power speed and graphics.

So, perhaps Mac should follow suit with this regarding it's sotfware version becoming redundant policy.

Yes, w10, if they want to cripple some software, then you cannot stop it! Setting things back to factory settings won't work either as Microsoft will just load up the same crap again.

I got a Laptop with W7 Pro, installed, wouldn't tough w10, because of the forced updates..

True, but if l bought an i5, for $1350, then l might have to buy another more powerful one within a few years?

That is why l went for the fastest one available.

There is a noticeable difference in chip clock speeds, but only if l compare my new one with one coming out in the next 2 years.

And also true, that a nice looking laptop won't outlast an ugly one, Although you can show off in public, so there is that.

The fastest one available is an i7, Seventh generation. You mean the fastest available within your budget.

Yes, l got an i7, quad core, that will max out at 3.10 Hz, so without getting into SSD's, yep fastest available.

Fastest within my budget, hard to say, but it was the cheapest Toshiba in its class, pretty much everything else in AU, is duel core or close to the 2k mark.

Frank, since you're versed in macOS, could you explain to a slow-boy like me why when you click on the red X of a window, the app closes, but there's still a dot lit under the app in the dock, indicating that it's still running?

I had a MacBook Pro, and I always thought this meant I have a file/window left open within that app, but it turned out it's just the application running in the background, in case you needed it.

I know you can turn it off, but why would anyone want to know if Safari, for example, is running in the background or not?

It doesn't close the app, it closes the window that you are working in, in the app.

It's nothing more than an indicator, which need to be uniform across any operating system. Lets say you are running low on memory and decide you want to close an app to gain more RAM. By looking at the indicators in the dock you can see everything that is running and make a choice, instantly.

Thought you had me on that one, didn't you? I just pulled that out of my butt, but it sounds good to me. Doesn't that sound plausible to you??? lol
