What is crowdfunding? Is it really legal? How to build your own crowdfunding campaign?

There are several sites that provide platforms for crowdfunding for startups

If you're launching a product and already have a prototype, check out kickstarter.

Thank you for your replies. I've got some idea about crowdfunding now. I've finalized IndieGoGo or Kickstarter platform for launching a campaign. Still finding which one is better.

Yes, it's legal.
Many people have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, kickstarter etc.
Here is my campaign, inexpensive capacitive multi-touch LCD Displays with WYSIWYG IDE to shorten the developemnt cycle for Pro embedded projects
