I would like to bring attention to the often least respected part of Rock...Rock Chicks. Rock is generally considered a man's domain, but there is and has always been a huge contingent of females that will rock your face off with the best of them. These are in no particular order and surely i will leave some out, so please put in any I may have missed. For me..female rockers start with the first hard rocking female group

The Runaways

Which of course started the careers of:
Joan Jett

and Lita Ford

You cant even say 'rock chicks' without thinking of
Pat Benatar

Heart (Ann and Nancy Wilson)

The Unequaled Stevie Nicks

Shirley Manson (Garbage)

and one of the new female rock groups I like

However ALL of the above groups and singers can't compare to The one, the only...

Janis Joplin

Like i said, there are TONS I didnt put up and i could go on for days. This is my small tribute to women that will rock you to the bone.

I was wondering what you would post after asking about embeding youtube vids

Funny I was listening to Cyndi Lauper on youtube earlier.
Embeding is disabled on her vids but Time After Time is one of my favorite songs and still tugs on my emotions.

    Hey Michael

Wow, that Janis Joplin had some voice! Suprisingly When Cindi Lauper and Madonna started out on their careers, Cindi Lauper was seen by the record industry as the next big female star, they thought she would be bigger than madonna. Not quite how it turned out!

Here is Joss Stone on the late show, not a bad voice for someone only 17 years old!

yeah i really like joss stone too. Her first release was awesome and i've heard her paired with other females

And etta james...damn that woman can sing. she's been a favorite of mine for years.

Now while i just covered a small sliver of rock, some of the most powerful female voices (to me anyway) are in the r&b field. There are women that sing r&b that will give you goosebumps and bring a tear to your eye.

yeah that's right, that was her first album The Soul Sessions. When she went over to the US when she was about 16 (Chicago?), she said everyone looked at her and seemed to be thinking ,"you're a soul singer?". Then they heard her sing and realized she wasn't half bad!

Believe it ot not this is a disco/pop antiwar song song from the 1980's which was originally in German! This is the English version from the German singer Nena : 99 Red balloons, despite being about nuclear obliteration I thinks it's quite catchy!

I remember when this came out. I actually liked it.

Thought it had a good beat so I gave it a 79.

American Bandstand nuts should understand that one.

This has a familiar sound, a good beat I must have heard it on the radio a few times without knowing what it was. Impressed by the son's(or father?) Tache!

    Not quite the first...

In 1971, there was a Californian rock band called "Fanny" (a particularly memorable name for us Brits )

Here's the only footage I've been able to find - sorry about the cheesy preamble in the intro - their best known song was "Blind Alley" which appears around four and a half minutes into the video.

From what I can tell in the Fanny video, the bass and guitar player are twin sisters.

Good spot! They are sisters (though not twins), June and Jean Millington.

Fanny are cited as a major influence to bands such as the Runaways and the Go-Gos. David Bowie described them as "extraordinary, colossal and wonderful".

      Not a bad rep.
