I saw Buddy Rich play very close towards the end of his life. He was always
my favorite until Carl Palmer came along, not saying that Palmer was a better
drummer, but I just enjoyed watching him play. He was more of a showman
than Rich.

They're both the greatest in my opinion.

The animal isn't bad either.

  I was originally trained in Jazz and big band so I listened to these two constantly.
  I was even excepted into Gene Krupa's studio, but my parents wouldn't let me move to NYC on my own at 15
  Anyways here are the 2 (IMO) greatest together.

  Now back to what you guys want to talk about...I'm not really into drummers...I'd have to go with Buddy Rich.
  
  But there's two other drummers that have caught my ear...One is the drummer from Buckwheat Zydecho... I doubt most experts would consider him great.. He just catches my ear for some reason and fills in the songs very well.
  
  Another is the drummer from Booker T and and MGs...Don't recall his name, but he has a real "congo square" sound and feel:

Well Mike we all know I'm an idiot, but now we know I'm blind also.
I never saw this post when I posted the Rich Krupa drum battle from Drummerworld

After I learned to read and write the percussion parts of sheet music I got a little cocky, after all I did write out the drum solo from Toad.
Well my instructor handed me this Krupa Rich album album and said write track 6.allmusic ((( The Drum Battle: Jazz at the Philharmonic > Overview )))
Sure wasn't cocky after trying (and failing) to write that out.

Undoubtedly Rich and Krupa were the best.
But, for Rock&Roll I don't think anybody could come close to Keith Moon.

He was in my head for days after the show.

My vote is for Babatunde Olatunje - He was quite the celebrity in the US 1960's Avant Garde. RIP Olatunje.

IMO it's Max Roach. I saw him about 10 times and was blown away at his artistry and musicianship everytime. He played with "bird" and Miles in the 40s, and kept on being innovative throughout his life. The Picasso of drums.

Wow, Booker T. Forgot all about those guys.

There were quite a few musicians who played with/in that band over the years:

Steve Cropper
Isaac Hays
Johnnie Taylor
Donald "Duck" Dunn
Wilson Pickett
Booker T Jones (naturally)

There were others...

Most probably remember their biggest hit

Not sure if he played on all the songs, but the drummer for this one was Al Jackson.

Here's the song from Buckwheat Zydecho...I usually focus on the singer/lead instrument, like guitar...But this is a song where I was just drawn to the drums for some reason, I can't really explain it.

Mitch Mitchell....(Jimmy Hendrixs' drummer)

Rod Morgenstein....(Winger....The Dixie Dreggs).....Saw him at a drum clinc about 20 years ago......his approach to playing odd time signatures, counting them out and making them look so easy and natural is something I've never forgotten
