Ok, enough's enough.

We can all read the rules.

There is one topic that should be off limits in the Off Topic Forum.

Enough already! Please stop!

These music threads suck me in. It's the biggest passion in my life. I end up spending more time in these threads than I plan on.

I could talk about music forever.

Rock on!
Michael "Tongue Planted Firmly In Cheek" Oksa

p.s.

As long as I brought up the subject, here's a cool tune...

Man, see what I started again!!!!

I love Dr. Hook, mostly the earlier stuff.

LMAO - I went to one of Hooks first concerts in Detroit at the Cinderella Ballroom. They opened for J. Geils, who of course is who we went to see --- and Hook got booed off of the stage.

Never get me to listen to another Dr. Hook anything!

There is one song that always makes me sing

    TOTO - Africa

    awesome harmony.

And one song that always makes me dance

Groove is in the heart - Dee Lite.

If you dont want to boogie when you hear that song, you may be dead.

Ah for crying out loud Michael...how do you start a Dr. Hook thread without
posting their first and biggest hit ever?

        LOL

Yeah, that's a good one, too. I also didn't post Cover Of The Rolling Stone. Not because they are lesser songs, but Ifigured most people had heard those.

Besides, I wanted to give others a chance to post their favorite ones. If I posted all of the ones I wanted to, there wouldn't be many left.

Cover of the Rolling Stone...Is that the one that goes something like this?

Song was banned from the AM radio waves where I live. Listen to the
          lyrics and you'll understand why.

YouTube - Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show- The Cover Of "Rolling Stone" (vinyl)

Song was banned from the AM radio waves where I live. Listen to the
            lyrics and you'll understand why.
My youngest used to think the one lyric was...

"I got a freaky old lady
            named COOKIE KITTY..."

            Instead of,

"I got a freaky old lady
            named COCAINE KATIE..."

And that's just one lyric in a song about "sex and drugs and rock n roll".

Dr. Hook had a sense of humor about things that didn't always mesh with the prevailing attitudes of the day.

Funny, most of their early songs were written by Playboy contributor, songwriter (he also wrote A Boy Named Sue), and CHILDREN'S book author - Shel Silverstein.

Dr Hook had 3 or 4 guys that sang lead. Dennis sings lead on Kiss It Away, and man! Talk about singing with emotion.

I saw Deee-Lite at Woodstock '94. They were awesome and Groove IS In The Heart.

Sal, Dr. Hook had some major substance abuse problems and were not always able to play well on stage. However, I would beseech you to give them a second chance. They sing with heart, humor, and can play rock, country, and ballads.

It must've been quite an experience to see someone get booed off the stage.

Hey - Jimi Hendrix was booed off stage once.

Of course, he was opening for the Monkees at the time...

          Good one, Michael.

That concert billing always amazes me.

If there is one billing I would die to see, it's this: Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce opening for Jonathan Davis' group.

          The marquee would read...

          ..

          ..

          ..

          ..

          ..

          ..

          ..

If we are talking about post punk then the greatest British post punk band have to Joy Division. Unfortunately the great Ian Curtis hanged himself in May 1980 on the eve of their tour of the USA and really, this was the end of a brilliant band:

Not really that much of an experience seeing them get booed off - they were stinking the place up.

Back in 85 Ted came back to the Flint area and played with ACDC openning......they didn't get booed off, but after a certain amount of songs the crowd started chanting for Ted and just didn't stop. I think ACDC let off a few songs earlier than they had planned. Probably an ego buster. And it wasn't that they were bad. It's just that a lot of us knew Ted personally, it was his home territory and that is what most of us came out for. He hadn't been home in a while. He gave us one hell of a show, too.

Yes patrician you've got the best two songs there! When they began they insisted on staying in Manchester refusing to move to London and signed with a start up label Factory records. This was the start of the Manchester influence in British music. A film: Control has come out recently on Ian Curtis' life.

Okay, as there seems to be a Dr Hook theme running through this thread, I thought I'd have to include this track. It's a great song and IMO, it was a perfect fit for the otherwise talent free Marianne Faithfull:

Thanks, Frank. I've only heard the Dr. Hook version. Ms. Faithful gives it a personal feel. Maybe because she has more empathy for the protagonist, possibly due to gender.

This was Dr. Hook's last Top 40 hit.
