Sad news...Anthony Bourdain is dead at age 61 from an apparent suicide. He seemed to have a good life so his inner pain must have been really intense.

I was reading the various sketchy accs of his story and twice I saw this sentence:

Suicide is a growing problem in the United States.
Is it really a growing 'problem' or an 'option' that has become more acceptable? I wonder.

      .
For Bourdain's 10/11 (?) year old daughter, I'd say it is a "problem".

well it a growing problem ..more among those who have lost hope for their future .. but with people like bourdain.. who have success fortune fame ..and no end in sight for their career ..

I wonder when you hit that point where you have all the trappings of success in our modern culture..but your completely and utterly miserable ..to the point where suicide is an option.. because you have to be in a dark place for it to be an option ..well or a solution ..

I've been in that place ..a few times .. so i can understand .. all too well .

work hard.. be successful and then where you have plenty of money it's easy to do things or by things that will make you happy ..

      the great lie

Success doesn't make you happy. Brain chemistry does.

Larry David, the co-creater of Seinfeld said that he was always a worrier. Always unhappy. And even when he made half a billion dollars on Seinfeld, he found that he was still a worrier and unhappy...just no longer about money.

Who knows why someone ends it? Maybe a combination of alcohol and a fight with a friend. Maybe he just got bored with life. Maybe he found out about a health scare.

Maybe some terrible secret was about to come out about him..who knows?

world view and hope for the future are not the result of chemistry.. but they effect body chemistry in more than just the brain .

when you don't feel you can make your life better ..or more joyful and whatever seris of events puts you in the dark place ...and not only do you feel you can get out but.. see no reason ..the the future is nothing more than things falling apart and crashing or an endless struggle to get out of the dark place but are only able to for brief periods ..before being pulled back in .

when you give up on the belief that there is a better for things to get.. and feel there is no reason to bother trying.. and maybe you feel things can only get worse ..

that place of darkness though is where so much of the art and music comes from and sometime you get eaten up when you pull from that darkness to create or perform .

He had admitted to contemplating suicide many times over the years but recently said that thoughts of his daughter had put that out of his mind. Very long history of hard-core drug and alcohol abuse and a very unhappy life, by his own admission.

Another one who was working at his passion. I will always maintain there is nothing you can do in life that will bring you more unhappiness, and in a shorter amount of time.

While on my drive to pick-up Honey at daycare, I caught an NPR, "All Things Considered" interview with him from 2016. I find most humanoids to be tedious bores. I could listen to this guy tell his tales for hours on end. I've seen everyone of his shows. A little heavy on the drinking, but most are 10's.

If you can't travel the world, watching him do it is the next best thing. Especially if you're a foodie. :-)

I have 6 unwatched episodes on my DVR. Glad it will be raining all weekend and that the NHL Playoffs ended, last night.

People really need to educate themselves about mental illness. And quit putting this ridiculous stigma on it

With Clinical Depression many times it doesn't matter how good Life is i.e. wealth, success, family etc..etc..
This has Nothing to do with "having a bad day" or "having a bad week" or Life is "throwing me a few curve balls "

For instance if he had pancreatic cancer or lung cancer NO ONE would be saying "He seemed to have a good life he must have had deep rooted intense pain".

No, a disease afflicted his lungs and pancreas .

So what makes the Brain any different ?? ( which is an organ just like the lungs or pancreas.)
The Brain gets sick and many times the pain is manifested in weird thoughts as well as a lack of energy and complete exhaustion and a total darkness that overcomes the person to a degree sometimes that they end up killing themselves.

We need to quit treating mental illness as some personality flaw and saying "he is just a sad,
negative, weak person ". It's a disease, people.

Because you quoted me, it seems you're trying to lecture me. Yes, I said it seems he had a good life, but you left out the part of my post that said "inner pain must have been really intense". You'd be better off lecturing the person on this thread that called him an "idiot".

BTW, I agree with what you said and made the same comments before here in the WF.

Unfortunately this will be a meme for the next decade. The minute anyone commits suicide it was mental health. No sometimes you can be perfectly healthy mentally and look at the wrong things in life and have your values out of alignment.

Can't say what was Bourdain's issue either way but sure wish he had put down the career and spent more than five days out of every month with his daughter. Your children can be a mighty strong therapy for good mental health.

Yeah, it has been well documented that he had Clinical Depression. As well as the Spade woman.

Obviously suicide cases are NOT always attributed to mental illness. Not sure what info. you are consuming to come up with that weak conclusion .

Probably just some nonsensical Myth you have latched onto with a feeble minded attempt to make it Gospel.

Do your homework as it has been reported for decades now in the Media ( and still is today) that there are many other reasons for cases of suicide like drug addiction , broken heart, being generally sad, terminal illness, financial ruin, kids experimenting, social pressures , murder-suicide pact etc..etc..The list goes on and on

Well not surprising as usual you can't read to save your life. I was making no statement in regard to either - which is why I wrote "Can't say what was Bourdain's issue either way ". Until we get more details no one knows for sure. 61 a very avid meat eater might he had got a diagnosis that wasn't good? Don't know. To use your word - only feeble minds would think they knew for sure.

Obviously suicide cases are NOT always attributed to mental illness.
Not for everyone if we just automatically have memes that associate suicide with mental illness. Thats the point poor lad

you have latched onto with a feeble minded attempt to make it Gospel.
Apparently my intelligence intimidates you to cause you to attempt to over compensate that much but the over compensation in itself is evidence of failure. I made nothing Gospel. I stated in fact memes stated as Gospel were an issue.

          Do your homework
Oh the irony. I'm the one pointing out that mental illness is not the sole cause of suicide but you are educating me on it by telling me there are other causes? You are always entertaining though. You don't intend to be but it still counts.

Anyway I hope we always have a stigma associated with suicide (but not thoughts of it) and I hope we get past the label stage with "mental illness" and get down into the somewhat rational (within their own framework) reasons people kill themselves. Many people suffer from depression that never come close to suicide. We can have a discussion about values and priorities which no one is talking about because its all about the labels at the moment.

You actually can walk and chew gum at the same time. Try it sometimes. You just might pull it off. If not at least you will be better for trying.

    Yes, a week of suicides.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/...ide/673203002/

She seemed to have everything, but put off getting treatment as she believed that it would affect her happy self image.

And she was motivated by Robin Williams suicide, shame.

And today l heard of someone else falling off a cliff, but he did boring cooking and travel shows, so...

I need to get out of my cave, more often. Never heard of her until the day she died.

I wasn't impressed when I heard a talking-head say, "She'll always be remembered as the woman who made every young woman who got her first paycheck want to rush out to buy that $400 handbag."

      Really? OK.

Yes - something you could use to make money as opposed to elevating your fashion status and nothing more. With the money she made, I'm sure the entire company ran on Macs. lol

In an interview he stated that he found life to be a, "Constant struggle, but loved the struggle."

Possibly, like many things or people in your life, you love it, up until the day that you don't love it, any longer.

True Claude's eating habits make the scientist out of The Fly, look like like a Sunday Church commune.
