Great for Nuclear reactors, and other hazardous sites.

Not sure if it can be remotely controlled, (skimmed the article) but certainly useful.

Yea l know, by the year 2050 we will see a strawberry field with these things working away day and night.

Seems that cheap labour is on shaky ground, (well, eventually).

      I am not so sure l do, cheap labor being replaced by, robots that will pay for themselves in a reasonable time frame, could create serious issues concerning poverty and yeah that...

    the automated harvesters that pick strawberries are already being developed and the strawberry fields are being replanted to accommodate mechanical harvesting ..it is only so long before the 15$ minimum wages got state wide in California and farmers become unable to underpay migrant workers ..

    forget 2050 ..thee functional ability of these robots is rapidly improving and surpassing humans.. while the cost trend down really fast for producing these ..and you do n't even need human level robots much of the time ..just robots as easy to teach as humans to do simple tasks..

      We all seen robot-enhanced production lines runnin' seamlessly, but this happens cos they cut out the random.


      Smart cars gotta cater for random quadrupeds on the road & smart hoovers gotta distunguish fluff from misplaced earrings.

    Only a matter of time before this is tested in the field, (so to speak).

    The only advantage there is to a humanoid form, for a robot...is if it's a sex surrogate.

    The human form is terribly balanced, top heavy, has terrible mechanical leverage, and is shaped to carry around lots of organs that a robot doesn't need.

    Organic structures don't translate well to mechanical analogs.

    It's why we have wheels on cars instead of legs. It's why our jets don't have wings that flap.

      I agree with this ..the human body is well designed for a verity of tasks and to with stand a huge veration in environments and diets and social structures .. there is no real need to design any robot for the same verity .. or with the same vulnerabilities ..

      that is why as they design robots that can pick strawberries .. they can residing how they plant the fields ..instead of just designing a robot that picks the same way a human does with the same limitations ..

      Maybe because we have spent the last hundred year training vast numbers of people to be more like machines and robots .. there is some sense of justice to make machines and robots that are more like humans ..but for most tasks when you take the need for humans to be in the equasion out .. there are far better designs for robots ,..and ai ..that don't have to work around the limits of the human form..

      instead of having killer humanoid robots on the battle field .. you can have small quadraped dog like robots that put eyes and ears on targets ..and then send in dozens or more tiny flying drones that basically work as flying grenades ..

    Read today that there is an idea being thrown about and endorsed by Musk to name a few to put a tax on AI.

    Since this kind of tech, may cause mass unemployment in cheap labour.

    Seems like a good idea, but they are still going to get clobbered, best to learn a skill, invest or create something than rely on going to the factory and making dice for Casino's.

      The estimates I've read say the USA could lose 20-50% of our jobs in the fairly near future to automation and computerization, so something has to be done. This doesn't mean every job lost means a person can't have a job. Some new jobs will be created as well as people may only be partially employed.

      Also, don't assume all these jobs are low skilled. There's a number of skilled jobs that could be affected too. Co-pilots are on the way out, as well as a number of truck drivers.

      Some doctors and surgeons could be replaced by robotics. I believe it's Watson that is making diagnosis and treatment plans at a much better rate than human doctors and will get better. With Watson, data from a variety of different studies is entered on a daily basis and Watson updates its knowledge base and results. No human doctor has the ability to handle all this new info. Robotics is being used for surgery, etc.

      The best suggestions I've read, and this comes from both liberal and conservative experts, is that we'll need to tax automation. They suggest that this will help the economy as it will allow people more time to start businesses or go to school. How many people in the Main forum don't have the money to run a simple IM business?

      But isn't the real goal of machines to make our lives easier and better? Shouldn't our goal as a society be to work less while earning the same or more? I think we'd be better off with 25 hour work weeks to be able to spend more time with family, friends, pets and doing the things we like doing. If some what to work more, that's up to them.

        Rich Dad, Poor Dad is ringing in my ears with this one, the ones that rely on a job that can be easily automated, are the ones that bitch on tv, when they get the boot, (l have been here 30 years and have kids and a mortgage is the most common remark).

        When you have kids and a full time job, then creating an escape hatch is difficult, but in todays economy it is probably necessary.

        I was also reading today that developers are trying to get over the cliff edge issue with voice activated systems.

        Cliff edge is a fancy way of saying, "Bilby, get me back row seats to this" and it says, "l dunno".

        In the near future they want it to say, "l dunno, teach me" and it brings up the site.

        My thought is that this loss of jobs to automation eventually evens itself out.

        If we get a glut of unemployed, some will start businesses to take up the slack and hire the skilled workers. Skilled workers generate more profit than they cost, opportunities will be created to take advantage of that fact.

        Probably more people will own small businesses, than before.....

        Anyway, the 25 hour workweek will put us more in line with the rest of the world.

          lower cost automation,Ai and computers ..lower the skills and investment needed to run a small business ..so being the median income is in the 50,000 usd a year mark or so ..depending if you look at household or individual .. it is very easy for people to replace earning from a job earning median earning or lower .. with a small business and probably work a lot less than 25 hours ..a week ..

          We don't live in a country where people own the jobs they do.. the jobs they do are comprised of work employers need done ..

          WE will have plenty of work for people to do that can be quite lucrative.. but most likely much less of that work .. will be something a single employer need a single human body for 30-40 or more hours a week ..or thatwill need to be done 50 weeks a year

            Yep scientists, AI or something similar and they are like a kid in a candy store.

            Need to storm their homes, tear down the iRobot poster and DVD, and slap them about a bit.

              billions of people around the world are having their lives improved and being brought up to modern standers of living .. because of the rapid advancement in tech.. ai robotics and automation. rapidly decreasing the cost of tech.. and in a way replacing the older model of industrialization in an area to pull people into the modern world ..

              we can spreed telephone service and high speed WiFi over the face of the planet with low cost smartphones that can be recharged with solar panels and work with towers .. instead of installing high cost landline and electrical grids ..

              soon enough with advancing AI and improving medical diagnostic equipment that will have the same declining prices or have .. with improving use .. that will bring current or metter medical care to the poorest areas of the world ..

              While people in the western world who are to freaking lazy to use the abundant opportunities they have to ..use the tech to learn new skills that can provide incomes or other ways to support themselves ...and sit an wait for other people to build business and give them jobs ..or the government .. to cut them a check for breathing ..

              It not the scientists or researcher .. bringing about this golden age that need to be smacked around ..

              well at least when machine learning is used to figure out how to educate humans much faster than our antiquated educations system .. and we shut down most schools an colleges .. the people who deserve to get smacked around will get smacked around .. those not preparing people for the world we see coming ..
