    All time favorite is Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub.


    So far this year, The Great Alone was a favorite. I read 6+ books a week so a book has to be pretty good to be a favorite. For a series, the latest by Dean Koontz is fun -( lots of blood, mayhem and imagination) - the last book of the series is waiting for me on my Kindle. I'm waiting for a couple slow days to get into that one. His Odd Thomas series often made me laugh out loud - first 2-3 in that series were the best.



    Prefer fiction - seldom read non-fiction. I get enough non-fiction in real life.

      I have to agree with this. I have read that book at least 3 times. although the sequel "Black House" was not as good.

        Those are two of my favorites, as well. I never miss a release.

        I also never miss any of John Sandford's Prey novels. While they've gotten formulaic over the years, Lucas Davenport is an old friend.

        Nonfiction? Give me anything by Bill Bryson. "A Walk in the Woods" is sublime. The movie, however, is terrible.

      I used to read a book a week and I thought that was fast.

      I have to limit my reading now because I go straight into another world and get nothing done. Well I guess that's the point but I have to discipline myself for now.

    I'm a huge Jack Reacher fan - so guess I better try the Mitch Rapp series...thanks for that one.


    Also agree about the prey novels - sometimes the forumula is good enough to keep reading...


    Forgot about Bryson - loved both "Walk in the Woods' and "In a Sunburned Country" plus some of his other work. I don't think there was any way to make a movie of his book that would do the book justice.

      Don't go into Flynn expecting the same tone as Child or even Sandford. Flynn is closer to Brad Thor and some of W.E.B. Griffin. More of a serious bent; more political (with a Cincinnati point of view) (that's an Ohio insider tip for you non-Buckeyes).

      Flynn passed away young from cancer, I believe. The newer novels are written by Kyle Mills. I'm less enthusiastic, but remain a loyal reader.

      You can get the chronological order on google. This really needs to be read in order. Vince Flynn also has one book that is not part of the series, his first I believe, but it introduces many of the characters in the Mitch Rapp series. It is called Term Limits. You do not have to read it first but once the character Scott Coleman is introduced you should read it to get his back story.

    I am a fast reader - but I'm also retired. No longer have to exercise all the 'time discipline' I used to struggle with.


    it's 11 pm here right now - so far today I rode 2 horses, walked the dog, worked in the yard and planted some herbs, cooked out on the fire pit and have spent about 3 hrs reading. Tough life, but someone's got to do it. This retirement stuff is exhausting.




    Added one day later:


    Some of the 'yard work' yesterday was clearing out brush and cutting back large shrubs - had a big pile of limbs after clearing the 'willow grove' (6-7 weeping willow trees planted together when small with intention to move them...good intentions are now large trees so we named it). Cut and dragged limbs...Tossed the limbs over the fence - put them in trailer and son hooked up jeep and we took them to the back of the property to dump them...yard and willow grove look great.

    Every muscle I have hurts - it's raining and I'm glad - means no riding or carrying saddles or moving much today if I can help it! Started reading the last of the Koontz Jane Hawk series last night and plan to vegetate today and finish it.

    There, there Claude, l have sent you a box of tissues, via, Hideously Slow Air-Mail, you should get the box of super sized tissues anytime in the next century, via barely working drone, and the tissues are for your nose.

    You should go and stay in Iron Mans log cabin, that will cheer you up, or consider camping outside of a Krispy Kreme store, and do a supersized video around eating there for a month, that would cheer me up.

    Life is rough.... Even rougher for those who don't have anything to say unless they are pushing old jokes and trying hard to be funny...or relevant.

    As for the hollow shell - while you are waiting for oblivion....have some ice cream. it's good for hollow shells - especially if they are chocolate.

    oh my - did I just fall into the claude-joke trap....oh, yes, I believe I did....

    I guess there is no cure for claudophobia....






    Back at the ranch - Al, I just bought Term Limits by Flynn...might as well start at the beginning.
