Some "Old School" Things I Do To Aid My Internet Marketing

I carry a notebook wherever I go in which to write down my ideas. Most of those ideas turn out to be useless but occasionally one of them will work out.


In that notebook I also write down ideas for domain names and the second I get home I try to buy them.


I never search for a domain except through my provider with the intention of buying it right there, right then because there are people out there who can see domains being searched and will buy them out from under you if you don't but them as you search.


I learned the hard way on that one as I once searched and didn't buy on the spot, came back and found that the domain had been snapped up by some guy in Hong Kong who has a reputation for doing just that.


I use business cards. Cost me about twenty bucks for 500 and they have made me thousands.

      I think it's Hong Kong, might be Singapore though. Anyway there is indeed this guy who has some kind of bot that is capable of monitoring domain name searches and he's got like 80 gazillion dollars and will snap them up right quick!
      Read about him someplace but don't remember where.

    Actually, there are several third party software thingies that will grab up domains on temporary registration if someone has looked up the domain and left without buying it. If that happens, wait a couple weeks without look at the domain and it will be available again - but it's a pain. As you mention, registering the domain WHEN you find it prevents the problem.



    I carried a small notebook for years to write down 'niche ideas' - if I was in a big box store and saw a lot of customers attracted to a particular display or item, I checked it out as a potential niche later. Same was true in Walmart or drug stores - or remarks by friends about things they purchased or were interested in....



    I choose domains by choosing the niche first an then using a site like nameboy to find all the domains that might work - and area available - without identifying myself as 'looking' for them.


    I don't use business cards - the beauty of working online is I dont' have to get that close to people....

      I hand out the business cards when I am at the bar because they also have info on them about one of my hobbies.

      I sometimes think that I may spend too much time at the bar but wine is good, mkay?

    When you find a .com domain is taken, do you find value in buying up the .ca, .net versions etc if they're available? Do you sit on them or put them to use?

      Yes, l closed down one domain this week, which was supposedly worth a few hundred, then on the page link Godaddy was selling it for $69, (after refreshing the page it became a 401 page error) so Godaddy software gives inflated domain values, why beats me.

          Yes, after deleting a domain, they then try to resell it for $69, eventhough it only costed $15 a few years ago, or hope that some will actually try to sell it for $400.

          I had one person contact me recently, (yeah, smells fishy) who wanted to sell me some domain name that sounded similar to the one l killed, l obviously ignored him, as l am not going to p***s away $400, for a similar one for $15.

          Best to sell it to a corporation with no brains and big cash liquidity, plenty of penny stock companys that may bite.

          But to the average struggling site owner, it is to laugh.

            Can't really blame them for trying to re-sell it quickly for $69 or more. People will sign up to get alerts when a domain becomes available, so it's a matter of demand. When someone receives the alert, they know they need to act fast since others will have received the alert as well.

            Business ideas sitting on the back burners, waiting for a domain to open up will begin to take off, so the demand can be high for discarded domains.

              No, more power to them if they actually got someone who would bother, but yeah a penny stock, may be interested especially after the SEC ruling is lifted, lol.

    The notebook idea is gold. Old skool way to allow ideas to become solid or concrete in your mind. I dig it. Tech can detach us from the process a bit much. Pen and paper can foster great creativity.

    I use index cards to keep track of my ideas. I file them by category.

    I live by a daily to do list. I have a daily routine for my online business for each day of the week. For example, I do the same online tasks every Tuesday.

    I've also done very well growing my online businesses with postcards.

    Old school methods are definitely alive and well.

      (1) Sometimes.

      (2) Depends on the nature of the domain name and whether or not it can easily be monetized.

    Good ideas. I used to have a habit of noting things down. But for some reason when it comes to domain names I always end up scratching my head to find a domain name on the spot. I do get random inspirations for names but never thought of making a note of them. I would not want to be a prey for that Hong Kong guy

      Just the .com that I had searched for but now now when I buy a .com I go all the way around it and get the .net, .info and .biz.

    Descriptive domain names could be a good idea. I used to be with Jerky Express and my advertising domain was MoneyMakingMeatSnacks. (can't post a link) I didn't have to rely on a description for people to know what my business was about as the domain said it all.

    Not many people today do what you do. I mean carrying a pen and a notebook. Maybe technology has detached us too much from the basics and I think you are doing really well on this.
