This is something I considered. They used to say: "As strong as Superman, as brainy as Batman" when they introduced a new superhero. But. the fact is, no one would be more intelligent than Superman.

Every super power creates problems. I mean problems in physics.

Super strength like Superman? Your body would have to be as dense as a neutron star. You would weigh millions of pounds.

Super speed? You would need to be super dense as well. A human who could run at the speed of sound...would need tendons, muscles, and bone strong enough to endure the fast changes in momentum. Inertia would be a big problem. You would need oxygen at a rate a hundred times that of a normal human.

Fly? Imagine that you magically (because you'd get it no other way) could fly at any speed You're an ordinary person who can fly. How fast could you fly before birds would be a major problem? Or insects? How high could you fly before the temperature would really bother you? Fly at 100 miles an hour and tree limbs would be lethal, telephone wires....

By the way, an interesting bit of news. You can dream that you can fly, have super strength....be intangible..

But you can't dream that you can run at super speed. Why? You still have the same brain. It's the same reason you can't mentally count at a super human speed. Our brain limits what the speed that we can imagine.
In fact, right now, imagine you are running as fast as possible. Arms and legs pumping..how fast can you go? Probably not much faster than a human can really run. Our speed of thought has real limitations.

By the way, even as a kid, I thought the most impossible thing about Superman was that he would look exactly like us. The same organs, the same bones and musculature. A face that looks human. Why is he the exact same size as we are?

I used to love reading Superman comics as a kid. But it's a fantasy character like Peter Pan. It's fun as long as you give it absolutely no thought. Remember, these characters were mostly created when comics were sold to 5 year olds.

I'm sure you conditioned yourself first to have something to compare it with. So you watched the 1967 Batman movie (with Adam West) before leaving for the cinema.

I used to wonder how someone would deal with a great super power.

I think at first, the kid would use the abilities to spy on naked girls, steal money, and punish people that bothered them. For most, the temptation to show the world your abilities would be too great a temptation. And that would be the beginning of the end...fear, hero worship, and the worldwide perception that you are a threat...would end up destroying either the gifted individual...or the planet.

But if you could keep your abilities a secret....

You would soon tire of using your abilities to exploit others. Eventually, you'd think of it as a great responsibility. And you'd use it for a greater good.

But I have to tell you, if it was me...I'd get a costume. even if nobody ever saw it. Weird, what we find out about ourselves.
