What about the people who have low self esteem, think they are ugly, avoid social interactions, are depressed, constantly think about how much their life stinks and if ending it would be best, and can never complete anything in their life...?

Or at least so they think...I really doubt they love themselves all that much, and such people are often seen later clinging on to someone for dear life, because they seem to live through that person.

Kindof like a parasite...

Well, just so nobody thinks I am that way....

1. I don't have low self esteem.
2. I don't think I am ugly, though I am no narcissist.
3. I don't avoid ALL social interactions. I DO admit that I avoid SOME.
4. I AM depressed, though it is mostly chemical, and I HAVE tried to get help.
4. And the rest doesn't apply to me.

Well, I couldn't really say I love myself all that much. In some ways I am worse than I was, and in some ways I am trying to improve. Heck, the last time I asked a doctor for help, he gave me a 30-35 question questionnaire, diagnosed me as manic depressive, and then gave me a dangerous drug to help. I took it for 2 weeks but, seeing that it didn't really help, had dangerous side effects, and was addicting, I quit it.

As for who I love MORE than myself, that is hard to say, especially since so much is involved. Some friends I will certainly go out of my way to help out, etc... I have put my life on the line to help or save others.

HECK, I would LOVE to say something like my mother but, especially of late, that just can't happen. AND, if God exists, It(I guess if we go by monotheistic means, it must be IT. The Jewish/Christian bible refers to God in masculine and feminine terms.) must either not care, or leave the one at the mercy of the many. Even today this place COULD have been a paradise but.... OH WELL! 8-( So should I love God for the beautiful present or hate it for the damage it let humanity cause?

My grandmother- For being an almost obnoxiously compassionate person. This lady is just unbelievable. She's pretty much the backbone of my fathers side of the family.

She basically raised me until I was 15, shes done more than a little bit to raise my sisters, she took care of my cousins for a few years as well.

Shes given so much to everyone.

I've promised her a mansion, yacht, and every piece of diamond jewelry she wants when I break my first million. (Well, maybe one of those things every million.)

Nobody else in my family ever really seems to end up in a position to give back (financially). I look forward to being the person to repay the kindness shes shown all of us.

I'd have to say it's my ex-girlfriend.

Why?

Well, people like family and friends can presumably be loved as much as I love myself. That's a very high standard already.

But to pick one individual to say I'd love more than myself...

I don't know. Now I'm not so sure if I'd pick my ex-girlfriend.

The general principle of happiness (that is, deep joy) in life is to place God first, then others (children, parents, family, friends, society at large), and finally "love" yourself third.
Much of our inner discomfort in life stems from an imbalance of this Love Hierarchy.

One person? Why only one person? Is there some unwritten rule that says you can only truly love one person more than yourself? There's a very long list of people I'd take a bullet for, much shorter than the list of people I would put a bullet in (just kidding, guys!). This is an interesting question.

And it saddens me to think of people who don't love them self as much as they should.

Not to sound overly narcissistic - but I firmly believe that you should not love anyone MORE than yourself. (But also keep in mind... there are many different forms of love. The love I have for family is very unique and special; much different than the love I have of close friends)

I wholeheartedly believe that you should love others as yourself. If you can't look in the mirror - and see yourself as a beautiful person... then how can you expect to love others? It almost seems slightly... hypocritical; to say you have such immense love of others - but can't find the same opinion about yourself.

Maybe... you can love others more than yourself. But in my own personal opinion - this is a very shallow and superficial love. Almost as shallow as conditional love.
