My version of 'hate speech'

I hate skunks. Not personally - I have no problem with the existence of skunks in the overall scheme of the universe.

I have a problem with a particular skunk - a teen age skunk who has ignored the acres of woods, the sheltered overgrown pond banks, the peaceful existence of open pasture and grassland......

...and decided to LIVE in a burrow under some overgrown bushes in our huge fenced yard. We have almost an acre fenced so when the dogs want out....we can just open the door and they are safe. No more. Now the dogs KNOW there's a 'critter' in the yard and they are determined to 'find it'...not gonna happen... again.

At about 5 pm every day, the little 'stinker' ventures out into the back yard - wanders around for several hours digging grubs and snarfing on grass or whatever. Well-trained 'moi' now puts both dogs on long leads for their 'outings'....my poor little rescue, Roxie Mooch, had finally learned to trust me and all of a sudden her 'person' is lathering her up and spraying her down several times a day.. She has yet to connect the 'don't bark at the skunk' with 'you still smell bad'....

Family will be home from Colorado tonight - will let them solve the problem. You can't relocate skunks - they will not adapt but will just die. But - skunkie can't live with us, either.. Amazing how one small black and white critter can highjack so much time in my day... Four days ago I thought the skunk would leave the yard after being cornered by the dogs...apparently the skunk knows he won that round...so...

Have you called the police? Have you started the eviction process? Maybe you could buy the skunk a one way ticket to Las Vegas, and tell it that it won the ticket in a contest.

    Have you thought of....murder?

I tried the free Caribbean Cruise tickets trick on some once, it just does not seem to work with them. When I had a Kangaroo infestation however, they jumped at the chance.

I know, its painful, It reminds you of that boxing match you once had with a Kangaroo and he thrashed you, jumped all over you in fact. Can you ever live down the shame of that defeat. Even though he took you to I hop afterwards.

I like that - critter would fit right in there.

I've tried to do the socially responsible 'thing' - I started a protest but no one showed up - I started a petition - but no one signed it - I found a dozen people willing to tear down skunk statues...but we couldn't find any. This social responsibility bit is hard work.

I'm pretty much down to a professional 'critter getter' or target practice.

Owls, hawks, foxes, and coyotes love skunks. Invite some over for dinner, and discourage any social distancing.

Back in the day we would capture the skunk live and relocate it to a different place.

I have seen people surround their den with a wire mesh garden fence with an one-way escape door that leads to a wire frame cage, old bird cage, old tin garbage can, etc.

Some people would throw moth balls in the den because skunks don't like the smell which forces the skunk out of the den into the cage. Problem was if the skunk ate the moth balls and died you have to dig up the den.

Some of the older hands told me to throw in some predator piss, but I refuse to wait foe a coyote to do his business while I'm holding a old canning jar.

Once the skunk is inside the cage - cover the cage with an old burlap cloth, so you don't get sprayed.

Yes, I am a red neck with a cowboy attitude.

What's happening with the OT section? How does an innocent thread about a smelly, annoying, unwanted creature turn into yet another one about Claude?

See cos when I dinin' out in an excloosive restaurant ...

mixin' beany startahs with vit-enhanced cauli mains ... an' mebbe a sweet course fulla juicy figs ... plus also plenty carbonated alcohol stuffs ...

Years ago a skunk ran out into the road in front of
my cute little car and I guess I hit him because he
sprayed my car. He must have got the underside
of the front end of the drivers side and the tire too.
I wasted no time getting to a car wash to spray it
off, unfortunately I did not think to use tomato juice.
Anyway, my car stank for about three months. Now
every time I see a skunk I think about that episode.
It's funny now but it was awful back then.

Good luck getting rid of your stinky squatter.

Poor Car! I know from past experience with dogs that every time Roxie gets wet - from rain or bath - in the next 6 months, she will smell like skunk. Wouldn't be so bad if it dissipated quickly.

I've had my tires go over a skunk carcass in the road....and car stunk for a week or two....can't imagine a direct hit.

Addition to the skunk story here: After 5 days of Stinkie le Skunk appearing early each evening and taking over the back yard....my family came home yesteray from a trip ready to tackle the skunk...and he didn't show up. At least not when we were looking. Meanwhile my dog wants to go back to that same underbrush so I'm keeping her leashed on a long lead outside. She knows she lost the first round and seems to want another fight. No, just no.

We had skunks under a shed while growing up. Eventually a cat that was kick out of the neighbors house moved under the shed. The Skunks disappeared. Borrowing a cat might work but then the dogs would have a new issue to deal with.

We have 3 cats....indoor cats who think sitting on the patio for an hour is all the 'outside adventure' any cat would need. If they saw the skunk they'd be crawling up the doot to be let in.

We're going to clear the underbrush in the area where he seems to be living - try to encourage him to 'move'...if that doesn't work he'll probably be 'skunk toast'.

Shh, if a certain someone hears that - you will have a new house guest knockin' on your door every morning for breakfast.

To rid yourself of the pole cat just invite the certain someone over for lunch, set a table outside the pole cat's den, throw a bottle of BBQ sauce in the den and VIOLA.

I think I've been 'skunked' all around.

A week of this little skunkie guy showing up and roaming the fenced yard every evening/night. Family comes home - skunk disappears. However, my dog still wants to go to that underbrush area so I've kept her on leash this week.

My son has a high powered laser (dangerous sort of thingie) and said he was going to use it hoping to frighten the skunk into leaving the yard (apparently they don't like bright lights)....then I spent a night worrying that he would blind it (I'm a wuss when it comes to animals)....

Today we will clear the brush and cut back some vegetation that could provide 'shelter'....and hopefully the skunk really is gone. Haven't seen him now for 3 nights. Odd how such a little animal can cause so much stress....my dog still stinks.

He apparently chose to re-locate and I think he was deliberately pranking me. FIVE DAYS he was in the backyard from early evening through the night....then family comes back to town...and he's gone.

We did see him ONCE in the property across the road from us....it's a 40 acre 'for sale' property and is vacant. Perfect place for skunkie to live - and so far he has not been back in our fenced area.

I admit that at night before letting the dogs out (into the fenced yard) I step out and sniff the air....if there is a hint of 'odour de skunk'....the dogs go out on a leash.
