Thanks to the Sun. Anton the science guy reminds us that a coronal ejection is relatively common, every few hundred years by latest estimates, one hits us. That means when it hits square on, all our electronics will be fried. No Sat's, no electricity, no cell phones, nothing that gives us the benefits and conveniences of the modern age will survive. (edited by mod)

The last hit big was in 1858 which fried a lot of the telegraph system in the US. Fortunately their was nothing else around that was electrical. In 1987 the whole of Quebec Canada was blacked out due to a partial hit. In 2012 a large pulse barely missed the earth.

However, once it is over, we can rebuild but it may take up to 20 years. Not the end of the world but a temporary end to our lifestyles.

The only thing still working would be military grade aircraft that have EMP protection. I hope we re-build everything to that standard.

There are dozens of articles and sites, etc talking about the magnetic storm 'that barely missed the early' in 2012.

I'm reminded of my younger son's question as a child.

"How is it a news story if they didn't HIT each other"??? The news man doesn't say "the car accident almost didn't happen", does he?"

Lol, good question, I'm afraid though it is a disaster that will happen, has occurred frequently in the past with no relatively disastrous effects, only this time we are all smugly powered up and basking in our non protected technology. We never had elaborate electrical systems before. The solar system is a shooting gallery and we will have a lesson to learn.

a Cme will not be as bad as an emp ..and the evidence they can find is it was almost 1000 years between the 1859 carrinton event and another event in the 700s CE

in that time ..the earth has gone through warming cycles mini ice age .. warming cycly mini ice age .. and we are nearing the end of another warming cycle and the plunge into a mini ice age usually come with crop failures mas starvation and mass death of more than half the population..

First, a CME hitting the Earth causes an EMP, they are synonymous with each other. The only other thing that produces an EMP of any size is a nuclear explosion

Secondly, there is no mini ice age coming, while it may be the case if we had not been around releasing all this Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere, it is certainly not going to happen now. crops will fail due to excess heat and lack of water. If we managed to cut back drastically, Co2 emissions , eventually it will lessen, we may see a mini Ice age.

Co2 blankets the atmosphere, trapping the heat. That needs to lessen first.

the nuclear explosion .. has the nice effect of destroing the electronic in your house and car and everything else ..

continued economic growth based of diminishing resources and endlessly piling up debt ..eventually collapses.. and we are seeing something in humans then there is the growing rates of obiesity around the world .. that will probably lead to there being less people on the planet in 2100 than now

  • It does take several days for a coronal mass ejection to reach Earth.

As long as we remain vigilant in monitoring them, it is possible to mitigate the effects. They talk about it here: https://earthsky.org/space/are-solar...angerous-to-us

Good thing there's a lot of brilliant people working on solutions for this then.
