The Public Outcry That Will Come with The New Windows 11

I just read that the new Windows 11 which will be rolled out later this year (and an early version apparently deliberately leaked for people to look at) and is free to Windows 10 users. The current story is that you have to do two quick and easy Bios tweaks first, or, it won't install if they are not already set that way. The install program checks that and halts the install if not set or unavailable. Woe betide anyone who has an old PC and does not have a bios which has these settings to toggle? No info yet as to how old though.

Support for 10 ends in 2025, a few years yet. By then, perhaps most people will have bought a new one but I'm sure there will be an outcry coming soon as other specs to run the new O/S are pretty low so why should I replace it, people will say. Oh yes, they say Internet access is also a must to run it. All new Windows PC's sold will have it pre-installed. Are Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot again or are they getting a backhander from PC manufactures or ISP's? I'm not very impressed so far if you can't use older PC's or need the internet to run it. The PC is a tool and should still work standalone if you want it to.

My PC is less than 1.5 years old and probably fine, and I use the net all the time, but that's not the point.

Here is the big list of hardware requirements.

Being connected to the Internet isn't bad for me. And my hardware is good to go. But the older hardware thing is going to be a big turnoff. One of the reasons Windows got to where it is is through providing as much backward compatibility as possible. Looks like they forgot that this time.

I'm not totally clear on the internet connectivity bit. Say you are doing a spreadsheet and go to save, it should not say, sorry, you cant, your not connected to the net. Hopefully it will be certain stuff that requires it anyway. But if it says, cannot start windows due to not being online, then you have a problem.

The bios thing is a real no-no, you have a perfectly functioning older PC, can't install the new windows and in 2025 are forced to buy a new one due to security and support ending.

Looks like Microsoft's one good one, one bad one track record continues.

  • As tech busts outta the stratosphere, it is unhelpful to raise the bar down bottom.

That jus' means obsolescence for many, an' more perfectly functional resources transformed into junk for many more.

For whoome is this a good deal?

learn how to roll with linux ?

if you plan for your potato computer to never go to computer heaven, you might as well.

linux is free, and certain lightweight versions can run on Pentium IVs if you really really want.

Unless you need photoshop 0.9 pre-release Beta version from 1994, then you're well and truly screwed.

Never going to touch Linux. It may be more slick than it ever was but it's still an under the hood thing to use. I used to like tinkering with Windows but their was a necessity to do so in the past. Those days are mostly gone and I'm very happy with that.

Update: Clarified: The upgrade process is the only time you will have to be connected to the net.

But here's the real kicker. You will only be able to run this O/S on 8th generation intel processors (or other chip manufactures equivalents) or above, crazy. So that means if you have a perfectly fine 7th gen machine, you are out of luck,

You will keep using Windows 10 till 2025 and then toss your machine away due to no more security or other updates after that time.

Microsoft have received such a backlash over all this, they even removed their Windows 11 compatibility tool from their website for errrrr, refinements.

Methinks that if they are staying with this, you may just see announced an extension for Windows 10 support, perhaps 3 more years would be enough for the transition of people buying newer machines.

      How did you test it?

  • I'm probably going to test Window's 11 first one computer first once it's released before I install it on my laptop. Most of the tools I use are web-based so I'm worried how it's going to work well with them.
