This Gmail Feature Drives. Me. INSANE!

There's this guy whose name is very similar to my Gmail email address.

I get his email all the time.

Job offers. Auto parts, electronics, pet store, nutrition store memberships. Personal email from colleagues.

At first, I thought maybe he signed for his account with a dot in the address. Gmail ignores those so if he has a dot, I get the email.

But the email I just received didn't list his address as having a dot.

Several times he's gotten important emails and I've forwarded them back with an explanation to the sender (normally work colleagues or local organizations).

I know these aren't spam or phishing emails

This happen to anyone else?

    I don't think that has ever happened to me but I couldn't say for sure. I only have one email address that has a first and last name but I don't remember or am not aware of, ever getting someone else's message.

    It has always annoyed me also that johndoe; john.doe; j.ohn.d.o.e, etc., email addresses are all essentially owned by johndoe in gmail. I guess there are some advantages to that also though.

    Your problem seems more like a human error. The person with a similar name is sharing his email incorrectly or the sender to him is inputting it incorrectly. (Human error annoys me too.)

    It happens to me all the time. I don't know how it happened or how it was allowed but I had the account first and signed up with a dot. He signed up later with the same name sans dot. I get all kinds of stuff for him.

    I tried emailing him but the emails go to *my* inbox. It's bizarre.

    I've planned to change email addresses for years because of this, but it's just too much of a hassle.

    It seems like you are having similar problem that I had few years ago in 2018 I believe, my corporate email at that time was my first DOT Last, and my personal is WITHOUT the DOT, and they have it too on their database, every time HR department wants to send smth, they put first Dot Last but uses my personal gmail, which triggers someone else, the person in HR don't even double check the email, as long it shows my first and last I guess, luckily I don't work for them anymore, so someone out there getting my personal information, I talked to them several times at that time, looks like they are very sensitive people, some people don't like to admit they commit mistakes, especially Human Resources. LOL
