Before Wifi 7 comes out we have Wifi 6E. The latest with the fastest Wifi throughput yet without being plugged directly to the Router/Modem. It is well to remember that despite these companies advertise gigabit internet speeds, that only applies when your devices are plugged in directly to the Router/Modem. Wifi/Wireless speeds are significantly slower.

Most devices you are likely to own as long as they are not too old will only support Wifi5 or Wireless N ac. This is slower still but faster than just the Wireless N protocol of several years before that.

I recently got my Xfinity Router swopped out for a newer one that supports Wifi 6 E.

I, having Wireless N ac at best on my devices thought about taking my computer to Best Buy and having them upgrade it with a new wireless card. A Wifi 6 E one, but theres the price of the card plus installation. Luckily, I just found this on Amazon by Netgear (link below). A Wifi 6 E device that simply plugs into a usb 3 port. Will arrive on Monday so will report back to see if the speed of the internet increases significantly.

One more thing. Wifi 6 E is only fully supported by Windows 11, so if you have 10 still, you should go with the free upgrade. To get the best out of it you will also need usb 3 ports on your device/computer. These are colored blue for the usb 3.00 and teal blue for usb 3.1 (the very latest)

You have been warned.

Update, I received the device, installation was a breeze. The installation files came on a small thumb-drive. I ran it and was prompted to plug the device in. During the process I was asked if I wished to disable the internal network card which I accepted. The whole process took about a minute. I then re-connected to my network.

The previous speed achieved with Wifi using the internal (ac) network card was just over 200mps With this device it went up to just under 500mps. I re-booted the computer and got speeds up to 530mps. a speed increase of 300mps is impressive.

So, if you have a modem/router that is capable of Wifi 6E and don't want to mess with swopping out a network card then this is well worth it. Their are other makes like TP Link versions of this device that are cheaper but I have had good experiences with Netgear in the past so paid extra.

Further update, speed went up to as high as 600mps
