Caleb Coffee is described as a 'TikTok STAR with 1 million followers on Instagram and 11 million followers on Tiktok.

He 'fell' off a cliff in Hawaii ("60-80 feet") and survived but has a few seriously painful booboos. Of course, very first article mentions a GoFundMe acct set up because 'he has no health insurance'.

He's 18 so I wondered why he isn't still on his parents insurance....turns out Dad is also a 'social media star'. Could it be that 'job' doesn't pay as much as they like us to think it does?

Seemed to me with millions of followers he just ask everyone to contribute $1 and that should cover it. Coffee is said to feature 'pranks and lipsinc' videos. Wonder it he was making a video when he fell....

I don't think on TikTok a lot of the followers are real followy (is that a word?).

I follow about 30 people, but they're businesses and I like to see how they do videos for their advertising. Some are really good...

but on the other hand, I haven't looked at TikTok for a few months...mainly because I've been lazy all summer and have been focusing on fun and not a lot of business stuff.

Plus, a lot of the followers on TikTok are robots. Not all but a good number.

Anyways, this Caleb guy's family has a long way to go yet to get to their goal of raising $100K. Like a lot of followers, I don't think his are really following that closely...I think they click follow but follow so many people that some get lost in the shuffle.

I think Elon Musk has the right idea though social media types are having fits over changes he's making.

Big fuss now over Musk removing the 'blocking' feature but I think he's ahead of his time. It's easy to lie about someone, to challenge someone or diss someone when you can PREVENT them from answering/responding. if you can keep them from seeing what you are saying about them, even better. I think this move may reduce the level of hate speech and personal attacks...we'll see.

Maybe some dedicated X users will think twice about spreading gossip or posting hateful comments when the person targeted can answer back. My impression of Musk is that he is at least a half step ahead of others on social media.

I am not a social media person - have never been that interested in it - would rather read a book, walk the dog, take a nap, pretty much do anything....so my opinion and $4 might get cup of coffee.

I have seen a few people reveal their (Google supplied) ad revenue on YT and having a million, mostly genuine followers would mean a healthy bank balance to say the least. Don't know about Tik Tok.

Influencer must be a real job since it has a title and
a job description and millions of people aspire to do
that for a living. People are so misguided these days.

I saw his story on the Daily Mail, he was hiking with
friends just before his accident, but he was probably
on his way to do some foolish stunts.

I wish that people would stop filming themselves on
tops of buildings, edges of cliffs, and other dangerous
locations they have no business being.

And they should stop asking for donations when they
    are injured or killed.

They might not be able to get health insurance, those
companies likely don't want to foot the medical bills
    for extreme risk takers.

The ways tic tock and Instagram people can monetize people if they don't have a real business they are using to promote. Are basically available to every content creators. And generally on really earn a lot of money for actual celebrities.

The add revenue has dropped on YouTube as well so even there the last year content creators are dependent more on sponsors and either books or information courses.

You tube might be changing as well as I have seen a few creators I follow mention YouTube is making organic growth harder and pushing creators to buy views.

So I'm my opinion is not a job for many I bet they eventually will get told by the irs it's just a hobby not even a business.

This is just a theory about why Elon actually bought Twitter. Eventually he will train a large language model AI and the Twitter data is a huge resource. By removing the blocking function and throttling bandwidth as has been done recently. To prevent large scale data scraping. He is opening up more data to train an AI on an making it harder for others to access the data to train their AI model.

But that is my theory I'm not putting any money on it at this point.

    Adding
If I could sound mean or snobby but I have no idea what influencer is supposed to mean. It's as watered down as entrepreneur. Or online marketer. When people buying info products makes them claim to be in online marketing.

Or people selling a printed tee shirt on Etsy with 3 sales a month can consider themselves entrepreneur.

I originally thought an influencer was basically a marketer who used social media to sell products. Now it's any content creator even if they don't sell anything and really end up being online panhandles

The Daily Mail article headline this morning is:

"Outrage as influencer who has 12M followers
and appears in ads with his fame-hungry dad
launches $100,000 GoFundMe to pay hospital
bills after falling off Hawaii waterfall he visited
    ILLEGALLY"

The internet is telling him to pay his own bills
because the family has promotion deals with
    several major corporations.

Only thing better is if he gets arrested when he's out of the hospital - for endangering a natural area around the waterfall.

The add revenue has dropped on YouTube as well

I don't spend much time on YouTube but I do watch a few short videos now and then - often music or pet videos. I noted the other day that I have never - not once - clicked on a YouTube ad. I just wait them out. In fact, the only ads I do click on occasion are usually Google ads and i don't do that often.

They don't stop on death - just switches to the family who ask for donations to plant the person.

Almost every news article about a death now seems to include 'the family has set up a gofundme acct'....

I've always wondered who the people are with so much money to send to gofundme's. I know it's often used for friends/relatives but it goes far beyond that. I donate quite often but only to charities I have looked into and support. I can't imagine just tossing money at one gofundme after another. My inner 'scrooge'?

Just feels like begging to me. Despite the hardships I have gone through I have not begged random people for resources. If they are freely available somewhere or someone offers.

The extent of my begging ends up more like go away leave me alone just stop talking to me. That kind of thing.

When I have extra and can give to others individually I just default to expecting them to spend it on beer cigarettes or drugs.

Just because a person has millions of followers it doesn't mean that they are rich or making huge sums of money Having a large following doesn't always equate to money and success .

    Thanks for sharing

He F*ed around and found out, basically, he deserved what he got. The Darwin Awards usually apply to someone like him. I'm not sure how TikTok stars are getting monetized but followers tend to hang around for a brief time and then follow someone else. Without ever un-following the original.

Sometimes I wish the governments would make the Influencers and social media companies responsible for any damage or injuries that occur in these events. Slightly off the subject. Look at the mess that was created in New York City with the Influencer who was giving out free gifts, which resulted in a riot.

For anyone not familiar with the incident here is a link for more information that happened from NBC. - https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...-new-rcna98256

    Same here.

Interesting new fact about this 'influencer' - he was in an area that was off limits to people. He had ignored signage that prohibited people from walking on that cliff. Any doubt he was planning to film a 'stunt' there?

Don - at least that Twitch 'streamer' was charged by police with creating a riot. Doubt anything will happen to him - but he was charged.

I watch that on TV the day it happened and all i could think of was this:

How is it THOUSANDS of people can drop what they are doing and show up for a freebie after hearing about it on Twitch??? NONE of these people have a job? Police should have arrested every one of those people who damaged property and cars, etc - but of course they didn't.

They don't have a job, that's why you can't even walk
down the street in NYC and some other places without
      getting jumped and robbed.

IDK what that crowd is doing for income but I'm pretty
sure it's some underground illegal business. Or they
are still living at home and leeching off their moms.

Did you see the 75-year-old lady get dragged by the
purse snatcher the other day. She was walking from
her car to the store and was robbed in broad daylight,
she held onto that purse because she probably had
everything she owned in there, but she eventually let
go and he got away. He has since been arrested.

      The future is bleak.

I would stop asking for donations if I got killed.

I know that you are kidding but I try to keep my posts
concise, although I do go on sometimes.

Obviously by "they" I meant the injured party or family
of the deceased, as Kay stated, nearly every article
about an untimely death has a GFM link, sometimes
for celebrities and people you would think had money
      to cover their own expenses.

I'm cracking up here - just saw this 'comment' on a news site...the comment followed a 'sky is falling' article about California bracing for an 'unprecedented tropical storm'.....

It's insanity here in Long Beach overnight, my car was rained on, leaving the top, hood, and windows with a moist cover. Plants were wet, and the ground, my god the ground! It too was, in spots, wet to the touch. Never in history have I seen this. Catastrophic. Horrific. Unprecedented. I mean, the sun is out, but please, give to my gofundme. Things, may never be the same.

I'm in Las Vegas so far the rain has not been too bad when I am outside and moving around. But overnight while I am comfortable inside there is going to be a lot of rain a1 in a hundred years event type thing.

The authorities have been trying to warn the homeless people living in the tunnels and storm drains but there will probably be a few deaths.

My issue with the medical bills of the criminal influencer. Is why 100k and do they really know at this point. Just let him get the bills and file bankruptcy. Also let Hawaii prosecute the guy and make an example of him.

Now to complain about the cost of health care in the USA. I hope what ever comes with the so called 4 th industrial revolution. The cost of health care gets driven down or somehow rebalanced.

    He has since been arrested.

Probably was arrested and released same afternoon. That seems to be how it works now.

My d-in-law has a conference in San Francisco next month - she's only going because my son is going with her. Around here if you grab a 70 yr old's purse she'll probably shoot you. Maybe that's why it doesn't happen much....?
