A West Point alleged time capsule was recently opened. 200 years old. Unfortunately it contained nothing but silt or mud. Disappointing.

What would you put into a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, given the opportunity?

No takers then. I must admit, have yet to come up with anything definitive myself

    Sorry, my Friend.

I wouldn't put anything in it. Maybe when they open up any time capsule, they can say "So, that's what Oxygen smells like"..

Update, on the West Point box, after sifting through the silt and mud, they did find 6 coins from 1800 and a medal. Not much, but better than nothing.

Perhaps put a McDonalds meal in one, so many preservatives it may still be recognizable. My mother kept some of her wedding fruit cake and dug it out when we were in our late teens. It was just about still edible. Perhaps put one of them in their, given how they hermetically seal them these day.

A jar of honey would still be edible.

McDonald's claims it's not the preservatives that prevent their food from decaying in the ground but the very low moisture content of the burgers. But they will probably still decay over long enough periods.

I don't see points in intentional time castles that are not tombs with valuable positions that have real archaeological value for the future. Rather than stuff we guess the future will care we tried to preserve.

Tombs, say like the ones in Egypt and others were only filled with stuff to assist with the kings or Queens or noblemen's etc journey to the afterlife. Not something we have done for ages. We have no room left for such extravagance anyway. And they would have to be hidden, or well sealed, because if people got wind of the riches within, they would get plundered fairly quickly, as did a lot of them

I think 100 years for a well made time capsule would be sufficient for historical interest.

The pathway to the aftahlife has always been driven by the afflooent at the expense of the vulnerabyool in the abscence of credible proof this is WHAT YOU SHOULD DO.

But dontchya jus' love alla that cat mythology?

Yanno, the preservation of stories beyond all mortal life an' death?

We might wanna considah a more frootful pulse of our bein' aftah we dun than enslaved lackeys hoist our evident brilliance into bandages fulla rot.

As yr natchrl princess, likely my ass gonna be stuffed with all kindsa exotica when I'm gone so's I gaht

        1) Historical significance long aftah muh days.

        2) Sumthin' to play with in the aftahlife if'n I can source the batteries.

In all culchahs, a reverence for death sits level with aspirations for life.

Jus' gotta balance the deal out sweetah for evrywan gowin' forward, I guess.

It is, mebbe, the wishes of the livin' that guarantees treasures be placed 'longside

It's not that we have no room for such things we lack the ability or mindset to build anything that will intentionally last 50 years without constant repairs or needing replacement. Yet extravagance wise. There is still plenty going on right now.

Instead of stuff that will last hundreds of years and many generations.almost all will be scrapped or rebuilt in a decade or two. The age of the 10 million dollar tear down.

With the speed of advances today . What can be fit in a time capsule that will tell much of the story of today do you want the music of today and the movies as well as what is going on in the news to be what is remembered.

Personally I'm more interested in taking a few acres of land that is used op and worn out. Then revitalize it so it's lush and productive even producing food 100 years from now. Storing carbon in the soil beneath it

If you had descendants, maybe put several first issue comic books in as time capsule, and seal off the Oxygen. Coins, comics, even some books would be highly valuable after even 50 years.

I remember as a kid buying several first issues of comics that are now worth thousands of dollars each, in good condition.

Weapons would probably increase in value more reliable and be more valuable as collectors items 50 to 100 years from now and still be functional.not even guns hunting knives or high end kitchen knives would probably still be valuable in 50-100 years

Depending on how much you want to risk or invest in the time capsule. Wines or alcoholic beverages that already have good appreciation rates and will age and be drinkable in 50-100 years. It's one of the highest appreciating consumable assets.

So land with food producing trees and plants that produce food for generations and a vault/ time capsule under the land that will have stuff that either becomes valuable or is at least useful in 50-100 years
