I don't know I have not considered it too often. It's less than 13 miles from my home, but it's a 1/2-hour ride because of normal traffic.

On another note, I have been to multiple Jets and Giants games at the old Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands. The current stadium is a complete ripoff!

Mark it right now: If Ryan Day loses to Xichigan AND doesn't win a Natty, he's fired.

If he loses to Xichigan for the fourth year in a row, the only way he keeps his job is if he wins it all.

"Ryan Day has guided the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 56-8 record in his five seasons as head coach (2019-23). His record includes a 39-3 record against Big Ten Conference competition, back-to-back Big Ten championships in 2019 and 2020, and Sugar Bowl (2020) and Rose Bowl (2021) victories.@

        I'm positive.

Notice most of his success is with Urban Myer recruits. Also, look at his postseason record.

It's a new world. You have to pay for players. That money has to keep coming in and it's going to be driven by beating your rivals and winning championships. Conference championships mean very little now with the expanded playoffs. Coaches are going to be on shorter leashes than ever.

  • Robert, that's the way it is in Tallahassee too. If you don't beat Florida, Miami, and Clemson and in the title hunt, you are a miserable failure who doesn't deserve a job.

Don, Kirk Herbstreit said Rutgers is a dark horse pick to get into the playoff.

    I'm pumped for this year.

Rutgers won the home opener 44-7 against Howard. I turned the game on for a few minutes and it was late in the 4th quarter. Some criticism according to the talking heads was Rutgers's defense looked weak. They did not have a great pass rush. The next game is Sept 7 vs Akron. Good luck to all your teams this weekend!
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[11802417].message }}
  • Don, I saw other controversy about that game in headline news, front and center, on Fox News. Your guys scored with like 2 seconds left with a rushing touchdown and many think that was in bad taste and a knee should've been taken.

The coach said they came to play until the whistle and being the first game, their guys needed the reps. The other coach apparently was pretty upset.

What do you guys think the "right" thing to do is? The score was 38-7 before the final touchdown.

Greg Schiano's philosophy is "always to put the pedal to the metal". In that case, you had a backup quarterback heading off to a freshman running back. I'm not saying it's right that is the coach's decision. I would have preferred they took the knee.

After the altercations, both coaches said they should have handled the situation differently. Rutgers Football's FaceBook page was lit up with both sides. The happiest people were glad they covered the spread.

  • They use to say crap about Bobby Bowden back when he was putting 40 and 50 up on just about everybody. They'd still be passing late in the 4th. He pointed out, though, that normally by that point it's the 3rd string quarterback who never gets to play in games and he has to experience throwing the ball in a game atmosphere just in case the guys above him get hurt. Last year, in both the ACC championship and the bowl game with Georgia, I think we were using our 3rd string QB.

About the Rutgers thing, though, it's curious why they didn't "practice" by letting the kicker kick the point after. I guess he already has experience so they didn't take that option?

I've felt sorry for the opponents a few times but I'm good with the coach making the decision because only he can do it. And I understand the practice thing more than ever after what happened to us last year. The game is to be played for 60 minutes. Full stop. My two cents.

      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[11802841].message }}
  • That score is misleading. It very easily could've been something like 96-13 instead of 28-13. It was like a university team up against a HS JV team. I don't know what has happened but hoping they can get it fixed.

Don, I agree with benching the QB. He's shown through two games he's not a FSU caliber (even in normal years) QB. If it was me, I *may* give him one quarter in the next game and then pull him if it's the same old same old.

At this point, there is no CFP and there might not even be a bowl. I'm just hoping Mike can turn it around. The good thing is he's done it before when he first came to Tallahassee.

Rutgers beat Akron at home, 49-17. Next week the Scarlet Knights head to Virginia to take VT.

I Turned on ABC late in the Vols game, they already had 44 points on the board. They won 51-10! Robert, you must be very happy with the results.

Dan's Ohio State puts up 56 unanswered points against Western Michigan! Nice game won by the Buckeyes.

Rutgers beat Virginia Tech 26-23 after almost throwing the game away. I was busy yesterday and was not able to watch the game. At night when I got in, I turned on ABC and watched the last few minutes of the Tennese game. Oklahoma had just scored but missed a two point conversion due to a penalty. Then they missed the extra point. I continued watching till Oklahoma's next possession gave the ball back to Tennessee after they failed for a first down on 4th down. With approximately 4 minutes left in the game, it was time for bed.

  • I have to pay to watch the games, but I didn't on Saturday. My Noles barely squeaked by, but I'll take the W. Winning dirty (as in bad play, not breaking rules) is better than not winning.

There hasn't been much interest the last couple of weeks in any of it, so I haven't followed much. I'm hoping FSU turns things around with their first win. It's funny how a game can affect your mood long after the game is over.

Rutgers was sold out on Friday Night, The game was on FOX during prime time. Rutgers started off playing a great game, but the defense still struggled in the 4th quarter. Three missed Field Gold by Washington was the difference.
Their running back has been doing great all year. He is an underrated back. "Kyle Monangai ran for 132 yards and a touchdown" He is underrated according to the announcers. They also said Rugters may be considered in the Top 25 going forward. I'm not sure about that they face Nebraska and Wisconsin next.

Congratulations to Dans' OSU. Mark's team needs a new coach!

      • Hide my face in embarrassment face

      • It hurts worse when you think you are good but then somebody like Georgia Tech eats your lunch face

I'm not ready to give up on him yet. They are still paying Willie Taggart off but besides that, it's only four games. Lots of universities would love to only lose four games a year. Of course, they aren't paying their coach 10 million bazillion gajillion dollars to do it. And of course we are on track to lose 10 games. So, Don you may be right. We'll see.

When are these universities going to wise up and do a performance-based package for coaches? You suck, get fired, and then you get a big buyout? That is total BS!

Double ouch for us losing to a rival. But in the loss, the new QB actually looked almost alive and the guys seemed to rally around him. Even though we lost, it was definitely a moral victory if he can keep it up and keep getting better. He has started against three top 25 teams, Louisville and Georgia last year and Clemson this year. His record is 1-2. Our OL, which is supposed to be elite since they are all 3-4 year starters, sucks big time. I'm not sure if the best QB could survive back there but at least the new one has feet and can run if needed.

      not sorry about Bama, though
Me either. Saban is on record as saying the only place not hard to play in the SEC is at Vandy. I guess he was mistaken.

Welp, Rutgers lost, they were out-coached and outplayed in a game they were predicted to win.

I watched the Vols on ESPN game after a movie I watched ended. They had just tied the game, then they went ahead by a touchdown, got the ball back again quickly, and tried a deep past that failed. Two more plays later they had to punt. The Gators roared back and scored with only a few seconds on the clock. The Gators then tried a trick play for 2 points to go ahead, but the Vols coach called a timeout to stop it from happening before the play started. At this point, the Gators went for just the extra point and sent the game into overtime. Gators got the ball first but failed to put points up in OT, this gave the ball back to the Vols where they scored a touchdown to win. The Tennesee stadium holds 102 thousand and was packed. Games like that are the reason college football is popular.

The game was advertised on NBC during last night's NFL game. It's scheduled for prime time this weekend. NBC should switch it local stations and put on a different game.

Rutgers had the week off they are playing this weekend.

" Now, we are going to South Bend this week for what may be the massacre of the year."
        Speaking of firing coaches,

On another note. The New York Giants (NFL) just gave the GM and coach Darbo a message mid-week that their jobs are secured for next season. Meanwhile, they overpay Daniel Jones, who is mediocre, and they lose again. They refused to pay Saquon Barkley's during the off-season. Yet S.B. had another great day for the Eagles with 199 yards rushing and is featured in this week's highlight reel for a reverse hurdle. It's infuriating when things keep getting worse. I feel bad for you Mark.

I was flipping through the channels to find something worthwhile to watch. It was the last 16 seconds of the Georgia vs. Ole Miss game. The fans started to enter the field with a play one play still needed to end the game. It took a few minutes to get people far enough away for Jaxson Dart's final snap. The biggest idiot was a fan as he came out of the stands, he used both hands to double flip The Bird, as he was walking towards the camera. (Where were the censors?) On a positive note, seeing Ole Miss win 28-10 was nice.

I'm surprised Rutgers won; they were not favored to win due to too many injuries. However, there is another positive and something to look forward to. They are one win away from being bowl-eligible for the second season in a row. In the next 3 games, they play Maryland, Illinois, and Michigan State.

Excuse me, Don? You forgot to include my Seminoles in the list. Was that on purpose or did you just not want to have to type out all 134 university names since mine would be at the bottom?

Coach just dismissed both coordinators and our WR coach. I've mentioned before I don't like firing our legends, but he (the WR coach) just was not making it go. We had superstars the last couple of years that hid it maybe, but it was time for the coach to go. I hate it, though. Maybe I'm just an old sentimental fool. Not sure.

The Oklahoma Sooners did a number on Alamaba last night. 24-3. That is one major team that won't make it to the playoffs hopefully.

Rutgers was beating Illinois with 58 seconds left Head Coach Greg Schiano made a stupid timecall to ice the field gold. The Illinois coach was anticipating the call. It backfired on Rutgers they ended up giving up a Hail Mary pass to the end zone. Schiano took the full blame for the mistake. It would have been Rutger's first win over a Top 25 team in several years at home. Making it worse it was Seniors Day and the last home game of the Season.

Congratulations Dan, Robert, and Mark with the wins yesterday.

  • I am PUMPED about this weekend! I haven't been this pumped about things since before the first game. There is NO way FSU can lose!!!!! If you don't play anybody, you can't lose to them!
It's going to be an awesome weekend!!!

In other news, Rutgers may have a shot with Wisconsin, the Vols should beat up on Florida, Minnesota is at UCLA and the Buckeyes go out west to show Oregon who the big daddy is.

Ducks played a great game. Buckeyes absolutely crapped the bed, especially on that final drive. Day needs to spend less time dying his beard and more time learning how to game plan a top 5 game.

Yeah, I really do not like the Duck's coach. He seems like a jerk.

Anyway, OSU had this if he would have fallen a second or two on the ground before he did. I know that is frustrating but OSU still remains in the hunt, no doubt

As much as I hate the concept, it was a "quality loss," especially if the Ducks keep winning.

The Bucks will likely get a second shot at them in the Conference Championship. The problem is I don't think Day is smart enough to learn anything useful. And he's an average game day coach at best.

The beard is ridiculous and sums up Day perfectly: looking good is more important that being good.

  • Don, thanks for the reminder. Now I have no choice but to go back into my depression about this season. I didn't want to open the thread knowing how bad we will get owned this week by scum Miami. I say that with all respect to them and their "glorious" program that have caused me to age at least 20 years ahead of schedule. Did I ever mention how bad I hate Miami? If there is any question, let me state for the record I hate Miami. Yep, Miami is on the big three list of hate. Miami and Florida/Clemson tied for 2nd.

Those west coast game times are crazy for those of us in the east. When I lived in Utah years ago, we'd be watching football at 10 in the morning, which was noon in Florida. 11:00 at night is past my bedtime. LOL

    Good luck to all.

  • With a payout of over $63,000,000, they won't fire Norvell after one bad year (after he turned a bad program around). But all/most of the assistant coaches need to go.

There is a beloved alumni who is an assistant coach. He was a great player and is a great man by all accounts but probably needs the axe too. This is one reason I don't like hiring your superstars. Some of them built FSU as players, are FSU. But when they can't do their job, they need to be let go. Or a face-saving lateral change or something.

I'm glad that you guys get to celebrate some. Even twice this year so far would've been a 100% improvement for us. LOL Now, we are going to South Bend this week for what may be the massacre of the year. Yay!! Great stuff!

I still love college football even when my team sucks. This too shall pass. It always has and always will.

    Dan's OSU had another win.

Rutgers became bowl-eligible after beating Maryland in an away game. I caught most of the game, which was broadcast on FoxSports. When I checked the start time earlier in the day, I didn't see a listing for it.

What happened to the Vols? They had a decent start at the start of the game. I saw the opening drives while the Rutgers game was at halftime.

This isn't college football related, but I thought one or two of you might get a kick out of it.

We're in Orlando for the holiday. We decided to go to Benihana for dinner...and accidentally had dinner with Brutus The Barber Beefcake and his family.

We're just sitting there and this guy sits down and I'm like, holy shit is that Brutus? I Google a pic of his wife to confirm. It was them.

Now, I don't want to bug him. I'm not the type to leg-hump celebrities and I figure he and his family deserve their privacy so I just sit there.

Then people start bringing him drinks and taking a few pictures, so cat's out of the bag. We start talking, my son chats with his grandson. Brutus tells me a couple funny stories about Jimmy Hart and the Bushwackers. Very nice family.

And now I've established a trend of meeting celebrities in Asian restaurants as I once met Alice Cooper in a PF Chang's.

Somebody already updated Day's wiki about him being fired. That's how likely it is.

I'm making a prediction: Mike Vrabel is the next Ohio State head coach. He says he doesn't want to coach college but I think they throw enough money at him. If not, maybe Matt Campbell or Eddie George.

Personally, I'm not a fan, unless it's on a neutral field like in a bowl or playoff game. Otherwise, I view it as vandalism and the home team has the right to defend its turf. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

That said, you won't run into this issue if you just win your home games.

True. You can't lie down for 60 minutes and then get mad when you get your butt handed to you.

On the other hand, it was good to see some fight in those 5 minutes from FSU. That was more fight in 5 minutes than 12 games combined. Even the coach got into it by throwing the UF flag. LOL

Meh. It's bittersweet. OSU should still make the playoffs, just with worse seeding.

That's the downside of the playoff system. Rivalry games just don't mean as much. I think my generation will have an issue dealing with this. My son? The Game just isn't going to mean as much to him. The Buckeyes lost to Michigan, won't win a Big 10 Championship, but can still win a Natty. My son is like, "Who cares about Michigan? We're in the playoffs." My response? "Well, but...you see.. it's just that...shit... you have a point."

The silver lining here is that Day likely gets dogwalked out of the training facility when he gets embarrassed by Tennessee or whoever they end up playing.

You just can't have the consistently talented roster he gets and fall flat on your face whenever you face adversity. Michigan has this guy spooked. He's seeing shadows that aren't there.

It's best for everybody that he move on to North Carolina or San Diego State or something

There's a $37M buyout to contend with, though. It's sizable but OSU has something like the 7th or 9th richest booster group. Wexner himself is worth $7 billion. If they want him gone, he'll be gone.

Robert, here's what I'm reading after the results of championship weekend:

"All four first-round matchups have the potential to be bangers, but the 8-9 game between Tennessee and Ohio State is our pick of the bunch. Both teams sport top-five defensive units in the country with offensive talent that has somehow underwhelmed at times. If you think the heat on Ryan Day is serious now, watch what happens if the Buckeyes lose a home playoff game."

Gotta be honest with you, while I obviously want the Buckeyes to win, I don't know that a loss here is a bad thing for the long game.

Rumors are swirling that Belichick is interested in coaching college and OSU is at the top of his list. It's very likely just crazy speculation, but after cutting his teeth as a HC with the Browns and then turning the Patriots into a dynasty, he owes Ohio a debt. If nothing else, it would be an amazing social experiment to watch.

I don't know what kind of news they have in NJ.

It's going to be interesting how a pro coach handles things compared to a college coach. I was reading an article about it that talked about all the reasons he is a bad fit. Two of them were that first he wasn't used to being nice to the mamas he has to win over to get a boy to sign. Second was that he didn't use today's media such as Instagram or X and the players and recruits are all on those kind of platforms so he is a bad culture fit.

We'll see how it plays out.

It is one step closer to winning the national title. Both games had great finishes, ND scored with 12 seconds left. Jack Swayer scored on the turnover. One thing Notre Dame said they have "no quit after their game was over." Day is going to have to have OSU ready for a tough one. Good Luck to your team Dan, I will be rooting for the Buckeyes!

        Thanks, Don! I almost forgot.

I've had so much anxious energy over the past two days...I started dabbling with ai music creation tools. I put together 7 Buckeyes-themed songs. Most are actually pretty good with a couple real bangers in there.

Anyway, I'm off to the store for last minute supplies.

That was a good game, you never know when the momentum would change. Once your OSU sealed that last 3rd down conversion it was lights out for ND. Both teams played great in the final quarter. Amazingly, your field gold kicker never missed all year. That has to be a record for the amount of games played in one season. Everyone played hard, they deserved to be the National Champions. It was pretty cool to see the tears of Joy from the one player after the game after he had the long hug from Day.

"The top 4 seeds may not have been the top 4, after all." I thought that during the game, Maybe some teams were more overrated than others.

"I guess so much for the Ryan Day needs to be fired' pundits " His OSU coaching position has been officially extended at least another season. Punching that winning ticket last night ;>)

Who would have predicted back in August when this thread was created? We would be watching OSU win last night.

Congratulations Dan, hope your not to hungover today!

Minor hangover today. Livable. I promised my son that I'd take him to Dave and Buster's for lunch if we won. We're sitting in their bar as I'm writing this. The noise and strobing lights aren't fun. But it's so worth it.

I'd love to shittalk Robert and his Vols but I have no idea which Buckeyes team will show up tomorrow. If their first offensive play is a WR screen, I'm just going to walk into traffic.

Rutgers plays Kansas St in the Rate Bowl on December, 26 in Arizona. Rutgers has a ways to go too ever be considered a playoff contender IMHO.

The T.V. schedule "Thu, Dec 26, 5:30 PM EST
        On ESPN
        Chase Field"

"If it's any consolation, to my Buckeyes contingent at my house, the game felt much closer than the score indicated." Knowing the way things can turn around in Football in one play. That is a legitimate feeling.

If you watched College Game Day this morning, here's a little inside baseball for you. There was a good deal of talk about the number of Vols fans in the audience. Buckeye fans were in short supply because they, especially students, are boycotting Game Day and the Fox program due to the number of noon kickoffs the Buckeyes had this year.

That and Ohioans know how this weather saps your life force. It's one thing to spend three hours in 20 degree weather. It's another to spend fourteen hours in it. Those Vols fans are going to be hurting come game time.

That said, I think Vols fans are going to make up a good portion of the crowd, maybe 35%. Could be enough to upset the home field advantage.

Vols fans traveled well and, man, can they shit talk. Talks all week of planting the flag, throwing the goal posts in the Olentangy, and renaming Ohio Stadium Neyland North on various services. I admire the bravado.

Welp, Rutgers gave away a 10-point lead to lose 44-41. It was a good game for the most part. However, the offense fell asleep in the middle of the fourth quarter. That caused Rutgers's defense to stay on the field too long at that point. They could not stop running back Dylan Edwards and QB Avery Johnson when they ran for big gains.

Rutgers' starting Running Back Kyle Monangai opted out of playing because of the upcoming NFL draft. Interesting stat: They said he was 10 overall and 3rd in the Big Ten for Rushing this year. He had 256 carries, 1279 yards, and 13 TDs. On a positive note. They have some young players who stepped up into Mongangis' position.

Once I rebound from this nasty hangover, I'll come back with comments. After that Jack Sawyer strip sack touchdown, we went through three bottles of bourbon faster than Claude goes through a dozen Krispy Kremes.

Now that the effects of too much Great Lakes Christmas Ale and Watershed bourbon have worn off, I can string together some thoughts without lightning bolts shooting through my head.

Texas played a hell of a game and gave ND a blueprint for how to remove Jeremiah Smith from a game. The question is does ND have the players to do it?

I didn't like the vibe during the game. I could hear footsteps. All the "almosts" were going Texas' way. Ewers almost fumbled. The Buckeyes almost sacked him before he dumped off the ball for a large gain. You just kept feeling that one of these almosts was going to turn the game in the Longhorns' favor. That's just how the Buckeyes roll in big games.

Then we get to the goal line series in the fourth quarter. Two Buckeyes PI calls (here come those pesky almosts) and the Longhorns are first and goal from the 1. But then Sark takes a play from the Ryan Day handbook and gets too cute with his goal line offense. Jet sweep for a 7 yard loss. Then Captain Jack Sawyer with the strip fumble TD to go down in Buckeyes' lore. Sawyer would be Governor of Ohio if there were an election today.

Again, props to Texas for a helluva game. And the classiest fan base we've played thus far in the playoffs.

This is an interesting championship game from a fan's perspective, considering the teams are two of the most loved and most hated teams in the nation.

The top 4 seeds may not have been the top 4, after all. They may need to make some slight adjustments now that they know how the playoffs worked this year.
