Managing Customers and Projects: How?

I recently did a little project where I had a handful of people sending me their work requests via email and making PayPal payments. I found it a little difficult trying to keep up with each person's emails, followups, and payments.

Can anyone suggest some kind of customer management program or system (preferably something free)? I guess it has to keep track of each person's communication to me, whether they paid in full, what the status of the project is, etc.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies!

You could use an excel spreadsheet to list the projects and where you could track progress using columns and could also put payment information in a column.

If the projects are a more complex you could use an identifier assigned to each project (such as a number or name) and ask the buyer to reference the id in subject line of emails sent to you. That number can also be added in the "comment box" for a paypal payment. Create a separate file on your computer for each project and make a form in Word that you use to track order date, payment date and tasks completed for the project. You could also use a spreadsheet to list all projects for quick reference to make sure you are keeping up with each one.

I'm sure there are programs that do this for you - but simple organization by project could work if set up from the beginning and would be quick and free.

    I always prefer simple solutions.

Thanks Kay! I thought about running the information through a spreadsheet like you suggested but for some reason I don't like having bits and pieces of information spread out on my computer. It would be nice to have it all in a system like Quicken and MS Money, everything in one place.
