Got a new Wi Fi Tower But....

it refuses to connect to my Laptop.

Tried a lot of things online including resetting and the FN-F, keys as well as the resetting the Black Box but it refuses to show up or connect when l force it.

My Laptop uses windows 7pro, (yes already updated the internet connection drivers).

And l did find if l make my tablet, (which is connected) a wi fi hotspot then l can connect it to my Laptop, but it has issues namely having to reconnect when l go out with the tablet and my printer which is also connected to the tower won't show or print when it has to go through the tablet first.

Tablet also had a code that refuses to work so l had to stop that and it worked.

So anyone here get the latest wifi tower, (smart one whatever that means) and it refuses to show on some of your devices?

I'm no wifi scientist, so take this with a grain of salt: does the new wifi operate on a band/protocol available on your laptop? You might need an updated wifi dongle for your laptop.

Maybe everything seems to connect, (can see the name, etc) except my Laptop which is 7 years old, (not sure if replacing the HHD with a SSD one and mirroring the OS would affect anything since it was fine with the previous Wi Fi).

Thanks Dan looks like my Laptop is just too old l will look into it.

Wifi is usually backwards compatible so I'm a little surprised you're having problems. What wifi protocol can you're laptop use and what is the oldest standard your new wifi tower uses?

Unless Win 7 is just too old, I'd think you could purchase a dongle.

I agree with Dan and was going to suggest a Wifi dongle that would plug into a usb port and bypass the ageing Internet Wifi card within the laptop. They are only about 20 bucks or so, or less, very small and not an eyesore.

Go to Amazon and type "Wifi dongle for old laptop" You will get many results.

The only other thing is that your Wifi setup is broadcasting with Wep3 encryption, you could try setting it back to Wep2 which has been around for years. Your laptop perhaps cant handle it. I had a Chinese android box that only worked when I set the encryption back to Wep2.

I'm not the one that buys new electronics every time there is an update.

There comes a point in time when your system becomes so antiquated that it
doesn't work with whatever you are attempting to do, no matter what because
    it is not compatible.

I had an older laptop, I didn't use it that often mostly when I traveled, and at
some point it didn't connect to my wi-fi, so I bought another laptop, which I
needed to get something new anyway.

The current version is Windows 11, which is what I'm using.

The laptop is my secondary computer that I use when I'm not at my desk.
The desktop computer is attached to a printer, and that is what I do majority
    of my actual work on.

My current projects are developing websites and apps, among other things.

Get another laptop that operates on current Windows version so that you do
not have these types of problems.

You can't make money with outdated computer equipment and software, all
of that is part of the cost of doing business.

Well you can actually, or l have no problems with w7 and online trading platforms overall, but l do have windows 11 virtually.

Tried just about every other trick l could find and it may just fix itself with an update, but l am not waiting that long especially for a cheap dongle. My laptop is probably fine and as you are saying it is the OS that is letting me down.

I really don't want to stay with the tablet wi fi as the internet lagged last night even though supposedly fast, also tried the new tower with my Mothers apple air and same thing it see's it in the list but refuses to log in, (but haven't been able to update for years because of the stupid sign in codes that need another Apple device to log in, (Apple money grab).

Thanks Mark but l am really getting over complex fixes especially if it is only 20 bucks, (have seen them for $8 in AU).

And your idea requires a direct connection to the wi fi tower which isn't possible since l have no round plugs on my laptop, (and my laptop is high end so have a lot of plugs most laptops don't have).

I can plug into the NBN black box, (optic cable) but not the tower.

Stinkin hot day here anyway so l will leave soon and try and find one.

Ok found one which had to be Amazon, (Ebay only had 2.4Ghz) for $24, and the only other store that didn't sell it for a fortune $20 had sold out).

I checked the Hz speeds on my tablet and found it was 5Ghz or 5g, so that explains why my laptop had kittens.

But all should be fine now, l will get this in about a weeks time, thanks everyone appreciate it.

I got an ASUS dongle recently and it worked for a while then started cutting out for no reason and now l had to uninstall it yesterday and restart, (already updated every driver available for my wifi) and today the dongle is dead, (no light) and it cannot see anything above 4g, (tower is 5g).

Looks like a total waste of time and money, but l may try again soon, well that and wait for Venus to .....off, (which is causing wide scale system stuffups at least in my country)?

Never had any trouble with the dongle I had. Have you confirmed its failure on another machine, tried a different usb port etc, could be a port failure or intermittent. Your machine is old too.

You should be able to exchange it with Amazon given the time you have had it and at the prices they are, so cheap, buy a couple, get some different makes even.

Only cost me $25 so l would rather throw it in the PC drawer and forget about it, (dongles need a 5cm Ariel for 5g or they f...up if there is a wall in between it and the tower).

Gave it one last chance today and it is connected and without the limited access crap but unfortunately very slow so by by to that disaster.

Probably buy a Wi Fi extender or booster tomorrow since they can take the 5G and turn it into 5 and 4, only cost 20-30$ on Amazon although no problems with the ariel since they are relatively big compared to a mini dongle.

Should finally solve this mess, and l will have to use the two sticks before l get the packet of matches.

Pah, had a blue-tooth keyboard with trackpad for the mini pc i had attached to my tv so could operate it from the bed. It was only about 20 bucks. Just packed up on me. Mind you, I used it constantly for about 3 years. Ordered a Logitech one which has blue-tooth and a dongle, normally was just shy of 25 bucks but was reduced to 21, so paid 2.99 for same day shipping. These things don't last forever, lol.

You will note that some of the dongles you see on Amazon do have ariels on them, perhaps get one of those.

Looked into Wi Fi boosters but most seem to only cough up what they are given, (5g in 5g out) and l need 5-4.

I also learned that Norton is the reason for limited signal crap l have been getting since it see's the 5g to 4g dongle as a public port and the other portable dongle since l take it with me when out also see's it as unsecure and limits that.

I have repeatedly told it otherwise and turned off several internet things but the stubborn thing keeps limiting and God knows what else.

Ready to uninstall Norton and just chance it with my OS firewall, or getting pretty sick of it.

I have not used any third party virus killers for years and just used the Windows Antivirus that has been free with Windows 10/11. It has been sterling in it's performance. Windows 7 did not have a native one to speak of, one of it's drawbacks, and whatever it did have will no longer be updated. You could try some free versions of ones like Avast. I suppose it is necessary to have a good one though as taking Win 7 on the net is risky without protection. Perhaps an alternate paid good one. Never heard of a Virus Killer stifling an internet connection though?

True to say though, these days much malicious script is delivered via rouge emails more than any other ways. Or just scam emails or webpages that ask you to call and cant be closed because people don't know about CTRL/ALT/DELETE.

                Stay vigilant with Win 7

Norton is still popping up but not restricting anymore or currently. Looks like the key to keeping the dongle connected forever is to download something which forces it to stay connected which solves the problem.

Downloaded something yesterday and it worked perfectly or no outages and no signal loss, Turned it on today half expecting it to misbehave again but once it senses a download works like a charm.

Looks like as long as l can find stuff to download it is fixed, thanks Mark.

Rejoice, glad to hear you have got it sorted. Must be faster than what you had inside the Laptop. Who would have thought Norton would be so restrictive.

Annoying little story. I have my large computer on a blue-tooth mx keys keyboard and mouse. I gave away all my wired keyboards and mice. So, when I took receipt of my new Logitech wireless Keyboard with trackpad I was glad to see they were providing a dongle as an alternative, you had to be logged into the mini pc to setup blue-tooth, no way of doing that otherwise.

I opened the box, no dongle. I had some logitech spare old ones, 3 of them, none of them worked, so frustrating. I nearly ripped the box apart looking for it. After a while I thought, one more look. Then, I found it, it was taped to the inside of the flap that you used to close the box!!. Crazy place to put it, anyway, inserted it and the keyboard sprung to life. Phew. I can also use this keyboard and dongle to get into other pc's in case I accidently switch the blue-tooth off, surprisingly, I had accidentally done several times already.

Lessons learned, not all keyboard dongles are the same, even ones of the brand the same as your keyboard. Secondly, using a dongle has the same range (30 ft) as a blue-tooth connection, so will use the dongle instead,

Spoke too soon, it didn't show today but l found yesterday when logging out of W11 virtual it disappears or it doesn't like me shutting down virtual 11 and go back to w7.

I reset the wi fi today and it appeared again, then downloaded something to make sure it stays. I will probably have to switch over to the portable 4g wifi when using vw11?

But either way resetting the 5g seems to fix it more or less.
