Do You Like The Band "Yes"

Loved their 70's albums. But they suffered with later frequent lineup changes. Jon Anderson was their most prolific writer, but like the Beatles being less than the sum of their parts when solo, he liked to co write with band members.

So, his solo work was either great, good or so so.

Anderson is now pushing 80 but still has all his hair and still a great voice. A few years ago I spotted The Band Geeks on YT. A group of multi talented musicians who reproduced ELP, Genesis and Yes numbers, pitch perfect and accurate. I thought then, if only Jon would get together with them as a band and start writing good Yes music again. Well, surprisingly, he did, and produced an album of fresh, original Yes material. They get him and he gets them. They are as good as the original lineup.

The Album called "True" by Jon Anderson and The Bank Geeks you can find freely to listen too on YT. It is his Magnum Opus. Possibly his last ever. It truly measures up to the greatness of 70's Yes. He is actually touring with the band.

So, if you like Yes, look for it on YT and take a listen. I for one was blown away. The 16 minute track "Once Upon a Dream" is worth it alone.

I still play The Yes Album from time to time. I think it holds up well today.

Pondering this - and Robert's thread about Led Zep and the Beatles - it's tempting to wonder whether in 50 years' time 70-year-olds will be talking about Bruno Mars or Justin Beiber in the same way. I doubt it.

Not because of age bias - at least not entirely - but because of a phenomenon known as the Lindy Effect which suggests that the longer a cultural item (eg a book) has been popular, the more likely it is to stay popular. Think of all the classic books and works of art that have stood the test of time.

My guess is that in 50 years, more people will still have heard of the Beatles than of Taylor Swift.

For the sake of balance, I should point out that most of those British bands would never have got started without their American influences and inspirations.

The thing is tailor swift is a billionaire now at the age of 35 and she understood the industry drumps female artists as they past that mark.

She probably won't need to be touring 30 40 or 50 years from now playing the songs she wrote in the 00s and 10s like the artists of the 60s 70's and 80's have to tour today and play the songs they wrote 40 or 50 years ago

That said I'm a old guns and roses fan and axel left his voice and the amazing high notes he could hit and hold in the last 20Th century

saw them here in San Antonio in Sept. 2023. They were incredible. 3 1/2 hours of classic GNR music

Yeah I have seen videos from that tour it was great to see the band together and outside and axel still can sing. Hitting the high notes and holding them was the only noticeable issue.

Plus the future of the entertainment industry if we look at the poor state it's in now. With the way technology is progressing in a few years if I want to listen to a song AI might create it. Right when I am listening to it. Rather than studios or artists using AI to create it then mass market it.

A decade from now tailor swift can be in the business of selling tailor swift robots that have a perfect replica of her body at thirty and perform any of her songs on demand. Heck the AI running it might adapt the songs so she sing about falling in love with you then breaking up with you.

i saw YES in concert back in 98' in nashville. it was a very disappointing concert because the sound was way too loud and very distorted. The sound guys must have been very inept.

iam sure they have had other live concerts that were unreal. I just wrote it off as an anomaly

I would not entirely disagree with that and include Bruford over White.

However, with Squire deceased and Howe slowly losing his guitar prowess due to age, the current lineup that constitutes the most recent version of Yes leaves little to be desired. The bassist is ok, but Jeff Downes on Keyboards is inadequate, as is the drummer, and the singer is not a touch on Anderson.

Jon made the right decision getting with the Band Geeks. Younger and all multi-talented. The act of working with a competent band has definitely reinvigorated Jon.

The only reason Jon and the rest of them parted ways was due to a prolonged throat condition he had for years which prevented him singing, so they got fed up with waiting for him to recover and forged ahead with a new singer. His voice is nearly as good as it ever was given his age.

Slightly off the subject. Sly Stone passed away yesterday, June 9. It's sad some of these great musicians from the past are no longer with us.
