Goals? What Goals? We don't need no stinking Goals ;>)

The other day, there was a commercial saying. By now, most resolutions have failed.

I took my last set of outside lights out of the ground and put everything in the attic on Wednesday. Today back to win chills in the 20's

By the way, do you know why the years seem to go by faster as you age?

Because every year slowly becomes a smaller percentage of the time you have been alive.
And...the past grows in years, and the future shrinks in years. So we perceive every passing year as shorter, because it's a shorter part of our lives.

Sorry, I just love hearing myself talk.

I try to look at every day as a fresh start. I'm just as likely to start working on a big goal on a Wednesday, the 17th, or whatever, instead of waiting until a certain time to get started.
So, I've already had 16 fresh starts this year, and I'm making progress in the right direction. I've gone from 1 step forward and 2 steps back to the much improved 2 steps forward and 6 steps back! I've doubled my forward progress.

Seems Capricorns are on a roll, that's for sure.

Thing is tho, 'goals' are such a meandrin' horizonal summons.

    An' I get it.

Year ends. We all fowkiss on The Big Transform. Then the pre-Chrissmuss pulse of our regulah rhythm kicks in.

tbh it is mid-Janyoory's jahb to shake out the last of the Old World from us as hibernatin' mammals worldwide plan their outfits for Spring.

As a ditzily delish yogah gal, ima inclined to say you gotta find yrself sweet in alla yr moments.

So many 'goals' seemta zap you this way without it evah happnin'.

    Chasin'. Strivin'. FFS evin Pumpin'.

You get that in yr head, you cain't evah settle on nuthin'.

Like a buttahfly wants only perfectest neckteurre, an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs an' fluttahs around till'n

    *ZOINKS*

janno muh wings done in an' I gotta fall to Earth an' snuff out.

Evry mid Janyoory is pre- sum unyethappined tamara.

Sure, coiffyoored baboons of maxo demise gonna seek to thwartya with all imbecile schemes ... an' you can nevah predict when unseemly rashes gonna break out on your most sensitive areas, demandin' all kindsa weirdsy creems (plus also weirdsy creem applicayschwaah techniques) ... so I guess the only person you can meaningfully cast, heart an' soul, inta the fyootyoore is YOU.

Which, actschly, means MOI in this instance.

Likely I will move around sum tamara.

    Walk. Breathe. Try on outfits.

If I am fortunate/unfortunate, I may muse on this in a consequenshwaahl/unconsequenschwaahl cuppacity.

An' here will be my deeds as done, my goals manifested for now.

Sumtimes the faraway, unattainabyool horizon is kinda jus' here.

Very kind of you to ask.
I'm writing again. So that takes up most of my mental effort. And I exercise.

Four months ago, I weighed nearly 285. Today I'm down to about 247, and I am going to get down to under 200 later this year. And I exercise every day for about an hour.

So I'm perpetually sore. Eventually, that will go away.

            I don't mind being 71 years old....but I hate feeling like I'm 71 years old.

And....I may want to start dating again. I haven't decided yet.

And what are you doing today? I understand you are getting the brunt of this storm.

Hey Claude thanks for asking. Friday-Sunday are my off days from exercising. We had some ice and temp in low 30s. so right now as we speak we are watching Hallmark . In about 2 hours or so we will watch the NFL playoffs.

Have any of you heard about the 75 Hard challenge. There are 5 rules I think. One of them is that you have to go outside and do exercise for an hour, or something similar to this. It could be walking, running, jumping rope, whatever. But you are expected to do it even if it's pouring down rain or a blizzard or 3 feet of fresh snow on the ground. If you don't follow all the rules every day for 75 days, you have to start over.

In some ways that is extreme. In other ways, people that are "important" to our safety and health such as firefighters, soldiers, police, etc. have to be out in it no matter what.

In the face of this kind of weather where you must go outside if doing 75 Hard, would you do it? Could you? Is the discipline that might be gained worth it?

Considering last year, it got bitterly cold, plus snow. I moved my walking indoors. Last Spring I missed a few days and got out of the habit. With Shoveling in the snow yesterday and today, the 75 would be a good start. However, knowing myself and the forecast for the next several days. No thanks ;>) Plus I'm a few years older than Robert.

If anything, the NJ 250 challenge would be something I might consider. Reduced to the 25-mile challenge.

"The New Jersey State Park Celebrate 250 Challenge includes five different challenges focused on physical and mental wellness. These challenges, which were designed to engage visitors of all ages and abilities, can be completed at any of New Jersey's state parks, forests, recreation areas or historic sites.

There are endless opportunities to complete the challenge throughout the state, from spending 25 minutes outdoors a week to hiking 25 different trails in a year. Participants looking for the ultimate challenge can pledge to move 250 miles in 2026, an average of just under five miles per week. More casual visitors can aim to complete 25 miles in a year, or alternatively, a steady pace of 2.5 miles per week.

Choose a challenge and get moving! " https://dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/g...-6b50fa52-8c63

I think the key to all positive change is to pick something that needs to be improved and get moving. That works for business, health, fitness, relationships, finances, and everything else. And we can do that no matter the date on the calendar.

spot on , Mark. My Mom will be 91 next month and she is still zooming around town in her toyota Rav. She says the key is to continue remaining active and stay moving. To not just settle on the couch all day. To keep on keeping on and to always maintain a positive attitude

When I was in my 20s, my Kung Fu training had me outside every day for a couple of hours. I wore shoes to keep my feet dry, but it was sometimes bitterly cold. But...with enough effort exerted, your body will keep warm no matter how cold it gets.

And working out in the heat? or rain? it's just a matter of concentration. If there was lightning, I came inside.

Would I do the same thing today? No. Never. There used to be a measure of Machismo...fueled by blind ego that made me do really stupid things in training.

Working out in the bitter cold? I suspect the cold negated some of the benefits of training.

And...those days of near limitless endurance are gone forever.

No matter what you do, weight training, cardio, bodybuilding....at 80, we all look the same. And I can see 80 right up ahead.

Ay, to be 25 again . It's weird but when you actually are that age you think life is gonna last forever and that you will be 25 forever.

But then again there are things i did at 23-25 that i cannot fathom for a second why i did them. Just knucklehead type stuff lol.

Mark, I should seriously use that advice!

Robert, glad your Mom is still capable of driving. My Mom had Dementia at 88, and my Aunt, her older sister, is in memory care.

Speaking of time flying. Last week, the Dermatologist said, " Come back in 4 weeks". When they went to schedule the next appointment, they had to schedule me for the following week, in March. Then you realize how close we are to Spring.

I won't miss this brutal cold! 10F degrees earlier.

      Embrace the grind.
Imho, that's what you have to do to have long term success with exercising and staying in shape .

One way to stay motivated is doing impromptu exercise outside your structured exercise via micro sets. Example would be taking the stairs on your apartment building and running up them, Currently, i do real quick crunches right before i go to bed. But there is literally thousands of things you can do to achieve this impromptu training.
Another example would be to aggressively shovel snow in your driveway in intervals of 5 minutes .

I've created so much in the last 30 days.
    Released a new book.
    Started a Substack.
Worked on and learned more about 2D animation.
Made my first 3D video animation (much easier than the 2D).
A new YouTube channel about a well-known gameshow.

I'm sure I forgot about some others. And then there are the things I haven't finished.
Biggest of all are a much meatier book, and a sort of documentary of abandoned barns, stores, bars, and outbuildings in NC and VA. That second one, I don't think city people have seen these. I certainly didn't in my first 34 years of life. Been collecting video for nearly all of last year, different seasons.

Just about to get hit with round 2 of the eastern storm.
    If the power stays on, I'll probably finish a big 2D War of the Worlds clip I'm replicating.}
Will make that in 3D later so I can learn more about Blender.

Clients are moving along with sales training & coaching, operations improvement, introducing AI into many of their processes including quoting and inventory management (with human oversight...it's not ready to fully take over), IT infrastructure improvement, and so on.

Been a busy first month of 2026.

        Thanks, Claude.

Are you guys interested in the animation at all?

I started by learning 2D and have just been getting into 3D video generation. The old school 2D has taught me a lot and I see more like a director than a motion animator, if that makes sense.

This is the thing I've had the weirdest reactions about. People who've known me for a long time, friends & family included, and put me in the "business guy" box. They don't know what to do about it. Somehow it gets translated as a loss of status for me...which is weird, because if I say, "I'm an author," or "Here's a painting I did," they know what to do with that socially. But over the last year when I've been on a Zoom call with a business person who knows me, all I've gotten is a blank stare. No words. Family has shrugged it off without comment as well. Even my closest friend. It has been pretty painful and I haven't found a place where an appreciative audience exists.

IDK if you guys know I have a space and defense show...over the past year I really upped the game. It's on YouTube, channel is Cold Star Space and Defense.

EDIT: Let me know if so and I'll post some

Same here. I'm a salesman...to my bones. I lived, breathed, and studied selling my entire adult life. But when I said I was a salesman, it was always seen as a negative, no matter who I told.

So....I started saying I was a business owner...or an author, depending on who was asking. I just made sure I didn't elaborate too much.

And my Dad...always thought what I did was shady. .and I'd hear "When are you going to get a real job?" from him and all my relatives (Me being the only one in sales, or owning my own business). Even when they could see I was making more money than anyone with a "real job" (which to them meant working in a machine shop).

But when I opened my first retail store, he understood what that was. And he would brag about his son, the store owner.

Decades ago, I was sitting in a bar and a woman sat next to me. She asked me what I did, and I said "I sell high end vacuum cleaners in people's homes".

She said "How do you make money doing that?"

I said "I sell them for more than I pay for them"

          Said asked "Is that legal?".

It was around that time that I realized that most people have no idea what selling really is, or how it works. And that includes most salespeople I've met.

Wow some people !! But i can up even that one Claude.A few yeas ago in Knoxville I was standing at a bar leaning on the railing looking out at the dance floor. And started talking to a young lady. She said she owned a local water bottling company. The kind where she delivered tanks of bottled water to businesses . Just a little small business. She asked what i do and at the time i was heavily invested in the stock market. She asked some more about it and I explained that the stock market contained businesses that you invest money in. And then with a straight face looked into my eyes and she asked if i could check to see if her small mom and pop business was listed on the stock market.

She was dead serious about it too lol

            Like i said, some people

When I hear a story like that...or think of my own experiences like that....I wonder what dreadfully ignorant question I've asked to someone who knows their subject...even the 20 year old at Best Buy.

My Mom had a woman stay with her years ago, to help take care of my Mom.

They went to the ATM and my Mom used her card to get money out.....The girl was astounded that you could just get money out of the bank. My Mom had to explain to her that you had to have money in your account before you could take it out.

In the past decades I've had several people (some relatives) ask me how we made a living in our store if we weren't employees.

I don't think these people are stupid, they are just now aware of how something works. And.....When you don't know...you don't know.

I still don't know how to use a cell phone, or text, or take a picture with my phone.

No. I've never taken a video with my phone. I used to use a Flip video camera and uploaded the video to Youtube. But I've never used a phone.

My Sister-in-law will show me how to use my cell phone to take photos and videos.

I know it's easy to do, but I just need her to show me how.

Kurt was the only one that could take a back and forth banter, and drive it right into the ground. A devastating insulter.....I see him occasionally on Facebook. Very smart man, I think.

I suspect Big Frank, Tim Pears, and Tom Addams passed away.

I'm curious to know what happened to John Durham.
I talked to Big Frank on the phone several times. A good man.

I forgot about Hey Sal. Yes, a real force of nature.

it's weird how we all come and go like passing ships on a sea ( one of both turmoil and exaltation)

i find it extremely fascinating how when i was a young boy i used to think if i died the world would literally stop.

Anymore , as an adult we come to this realization about death : we grieve for a second ( for some of us a little longer) and then Life resumes as usual

I suspect Big Frank, Tim Pears, and Tom Addams passed away.

I'm curious to know what happened to John Durham.

And now, 1/12th of the year is gone. I'm nowhere near accomplishing 1/12 of the things I planned to do. This is how you get behind, and it all starts adding up to the point of being overwhelmed, which can lead to regrets if you don't push through and try to salvage your plans and goals.

Or at least that's true for me.

I started a new diet on 26th January. Something clicked and after many attempts I was able to break a few habits I'd been trying to for a long time, and stick to a few rules i'd struggled with before - EG - using myfitnesspal to track calorie intake and not giving up after a few days.

You know when you try something for a long time, then one day something nudges you and you just know that this time it's going to be different? That was how it was.

Currently on day 36 and it's going quite well. It's one of those ones where it will probably take another two months or so to experience radical changes but I'm in for the long haul with this one.

Down about 6kg so far. Small improvements can be noted in my typical training routine measurements - times, reps etc. A few noticeable differences visibly. After the first week or two my cravings died down and my appetite changed a little (wanted less food).

Also got some other changes happening simultaneously - cutting out as much UPF as possible, moving to whole foods. Squeezing the eating window to make it smaller to extend fasting zone. Anyone else on a diet here?

For about 5 months now. So far I've gone from 285 pounds down to 237. I'll get down to about 200, then buy new clothes.

I just limit calories (now 1200 a day) and cut out all sugar, bread, grains, processed foods.

My carbs are down to about 20 a day. It's a Keto diet.

I record my weight every day. My weight may stay the same for several days, then drop by a couple pounds. I suspect that's water weight, depending on what I eat.

My diet now consists mostly of steak, pork chops, eggs, chicken breasts, spinach salad, frozen broccoli and a few other low calorie/low carb vegies. and sugar free salad dressings.

It helps that I can't cook, except these foods. There are days I think I'd kill for an apple or orange. I had to take all the sugar, flour, baking stuff, candy, ice cream out of the house and give them to my step daughter.

I exercise hard for an hour a day. At first it was 15 minutes. Anyway, I don't really have anyone to tell....or even notice I've lost weight....so I put it here.

I am now congratulating myself for my bravery and courage in my fight to look and feel like a human being.

hey claude congrats you are doing amazing

Just be careful with the cholesterol on those high fat high protein dishes.

Also , apples are a super food. Yeah, it's got sugar and oranges do too but the pros certainly outweigh the cons with those two food!

Anyways, don't want to sound preachy but you know your body better than anyone ( well maybe except for Dan ) and just keep moving forward as your doing great

Apples are all carbs. And in a keto diet, carbs are the enemy. I'm losing weight, but most of it is fat loss, because the body burns fat as an energy source when there are no carbs to burn. But you are right, a keto diet isn't that healthy over a long period of time.

Once I get to a tad under 200 pounds, I'll just eat less calories to keep the weight off, and eat more of fruits. Even now, I eat strawberries and blueberries, because they are low in sugars.

I appreciate the encouragement. You're a good man.

i eat a huge portion of organic blueberries every single week. Google it and chatgpt 'the healthiest fruit' and nine out of ten times blueberries hits no. 1. For brain health and clean arteries you can't beat them.

i also eat a large portion of nuts and almonds every week

Yup. Organic Blueberries is what I eat every day, about a handful.

Pecans, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts...I put them on my spinach salads.

Nearly every night. I try to eat my last meal between 8-9PM, and I got to bed a few hours later. But yeah, I get really hungry before I go to bed. I usually eat a little cottage cheese, or a can of chicken soup. Anything that has few calories and is a little filling.

Just no sweets, or sugar. A cup of soup or bullion usually will suffice.

It helps that I took all tempting treats out of the house. But I'm pretty much a stickler that 1,200 calories a day is my limit.

I also only really eat two meals a day. A lunch at about 2PM and a late supper.

I never wake up with food cravings though.

On the subject of cholesterol, I was listening to one of those experts on Diary Of A CEO recently and he was disputing the whole cholesterol thing and claiming that the cholesterol from food we consume passes right through us and claimed that it has no bearing on our cholesterol level and that this level is independent of our food intake. Could be BS but didn't seem to be and was an interesting theory.

Yeh I love blueberries in my porridge and as for nuts - I have 8 kinds and two kinds of seeds in small portions (approx 1 or 2 of each nut). I've found that they are really useful for staving off hunger - EG - if I eat a meal but am still a bit hungry and have some calorie allowance left, nuts are really good for filing that gap. My nut/seed portion is about 130 cals.

Regarding evening cravings - as mentioned in my original post above, I try to squeeze my eating window at both ends, So each evening I try to close the eating window as soon after dinner as possible, then only have water and herbal tea until the next day - whereas before this diet I would snack in the evening. So at first this was the hardest part, because I would get lots of cravings through the evening, But it quickly got weaker (after a week or two) and some days it's harder than others, but I make sure to load up with a good dinner to get me through. I just use the water and tea when I get a strong urge.

I also gave up junk desserts and just have some fruit and Greek yoghurt with chia/flax after dinner and a couple of squares of dark choc. Being committed to the eating window (and writing down the open/close times each day in a text file) helps me to resist the cravings - once I've closed it, it takes a lot to open it again as I am stretching the window for longer and working against all of the other gains. I see willpower as a muscle that needs daily workouts and something that gets easier when it's habitual.

The hardest thing to quit for me was those potato chips. What I did was to watch/read a lot of stuff about how much science goes into making those things addictive. That made me not want to be falling for their dirty tricks. The scientists work on the crunch factor as well as the taste so my GF advised me to start eating raw organic carrot to replace these potato chips because it's crunchy. That worked.

I read a very good book called 'The Glucose Revolution'. There's a lot to it, but the short version is - it's about lowering glucose spikes. And the main method is the order you eat - fibre first, protein/fat second, carbs last. It's interesting but I just took one thing from it - the first thing I eat each day is a big plate of salad, raw veg and fermented sauerkraut. And whenever possible I eat fibre before a meal. This may lower my spikes but the main benefit for me has been to fill myself with low calorie and healthy veg/salad which makes it easier to have less of the other higher calorie food in my meals.

Sorry for the TL;DR.....as you can see, the plan has been to implement a lot of stuff together, much of which I practiced for a while - small tweaks compounding into big changes over time. Well done on the healthy diet mate.

That's fantastic! Regarding the calories - wow, I set my calorie goal at 2488 per day, meaning I just have to eat less than that to maintain a deficit. 1200 seems really low? But I'm 192cm (6'4") and 111kg (244lb).

I eat less carbs than before but proper keto gives me the shakes and makes me feel ill. I need my porridge! Yes, similar to you removing bad food from the house, I identified the junk food that I was emotionally eating or that caused loss of control (bingeing) and don't have them around (EG crisps (what you call potato chips) and sweets.

Congratulations from me too on your bravery, courage and success. After what you've been through, you could have given up but it seems that you've gone the other way which is fantastic. Keep it up mate

Thank you. Starting yesterday, I stopped counting carbs as much. Same as you, the Keto diet makes me feel weak and a little ill. It makes it hard to motivate myself to exercise properly....although I'm able to keep at it every day without cheating.

I'm not brave or courageous. And it doesn't take much willpower.

Losing my wife affected me in several ways.

.I don't eat much partly because all the pleasure of eating is gone. So it's easy to not snack, eat ice cream, or candy. And none of that is in the house anyway, so there is no temptation.

The truth is I didn't really start dieting until I found out that I lost about 35 pounds just from not eating much. Mourning affects us all differently. Some binge eat, others simply lose their appetite. I lost my appetite.

And I exercise every day because I used to do that a few decades ago, and at 71, I hate feeling old and weak. At my age there is a hard limit on how well conditioned I can become, but I'll keep at it until I can't anymore.

Yeah, 1200 calories a day is really low, but but I'm getting plenty of protein and I'm eating healthy, just not as many carbs as usual. I'll eat more when my target weight is reached.
