Walking for Exercise is a Different Animal...

i think i have found the perfect exercise for ME!! And that is power walking with a 20 lb weighted vest for 1 1/2 hrs a pop.

It is just so mentally and physically liberating. It's easy on one hand but makes me sweat at the end of the workout. And i cannot tell you how mentally taxing Running and doing the Stationary Bike have been to me.

This power walking is like meeting a new best friend. Just so refreshing that for once in my life i look forward to the next day of exercise !! Cheers

I've come to enjoy walking too. Now I'm planning on adding intervals to up the intensity. I've done that in the past, and it was both satisfying and helped me lose weight and get in better shape.

Walk fast for 2 minutes and a little slower for 1 minute and then continue. There are a lot of intervals you can use as far as time. Before, when I started them, I was doing 10 second very fast intervals. That short but more intense effort made me feel good.

Is your weighted "vest" natural like mine, or did you have to buy yours? LOL

yeah Mark I bought a Pacearth weighted vest on Amazon. The best $60 investment i have made. Kind of uncomfortable at first but got used to it after a little time .

the intervals( walking intervals right ?) you talk about are ingenious. i think i will incorporate that as well. thanks man

Anyway, cheers to Walking and to a very sustainable means to a healthy life

Even though my "vest" is natural, that doesn't mean it was free. McDonald's, pizza, dinner, and snacks all cost money, you know!

I used to wear a weighted vest, ankle weights, and carry ten pound dumbbells for walks (maybe 40 minutes). That was a few decades ago, when I was in shape.

Now I walk 40 minutes in the morning on a treadmill, and that gets me going for the day.
And just before the treadmill, I do 100 slow deep knee bends. Believe me, it took several weeks to build up to that. Now, when I get on the treadmill, I'm already at about 110 BPM. (my target BPM at my age).

I'm glad to hear you've found a great way to exercise. It's a journey.

don't mean to pry but it resonated to me when you said you wanted to get down to 200 lbs because that is what i am aiming for.

Any progress for you ?? i seem to be stuck at 230 lbs

And I seem to be stuck at 220 for the last month. I lose a pound then gain it back. My daily calorie intake is about 1200-1400 calories.

I exercise every day, and eat almost no sugar, bread, baked goods, or soda with sugar.

I'll try going on 2 40 minute walks a day (instead of one) and see if that helps.

I strongly suspect that because I was eating so few calories for the last several months, my metabolism adjusted downward. And at 71, age isn't my friend.

But 200 is not where I want to end up. I think 180 is about ideal for my height and body type.

Anyway, I want you to know that I see you're one of the few keeping this forum alive. You're a good man.

  • Back in the day, The Howlee an' Duvvout would descend inta the bowels of the Abyss jus' so's they could walk back up again, undestroyed by deemins.

"If we can mirror this structure ... in an inverted kind of way ...we could build cathedrals -- and only the fittest and most devoted would ever reach the summit."

So the Howlee an' Duvvout descended ... down along paths seemed almost poipoise crafted for their advance.

Summa 'em never came back. (Surprise.)

But summa 'em DID. (No frickin' jokin')

FACT: Mosta the tall buildins we see today owe their intrinsic architeckchoore to The Howlee an' Duvvout turned back bcs they could no longah stand their Howlee Raiment bein' drenched in their own pee for fear of deemins.

They descended sum, then they rose agin -- an' once they dun whippin' the guys dug up stone an' knoo how to fashin' buildins, it was Voila Cathedral Time.

An' so, yeah, walkin' miles an' increasin' the load you gotta carry are both cool ways to maximise muscle powah 'cross yr whole gnatummy without recourse to alien semen injectschwaahns.

BUT ... anytime you see sum stairs, you can go up 'em an' down 'em, an' up em' an down 'em, till'n you cain't take it no more.

An' you will become buffed till'n yr strawbs become supaheroically perky.

Gotta figure the Howlee an' Duvvout will be withya all the way -- screamin' from the depths of the Abyss for rescue, or shoutin' down from above sumthin' like, "keep going, sweeties! Just another 2000 steps and you could win a FREE BANANA!"

  • I've heard the statement many times that says something like, You can't undo a bad diet with exercise. Meaning, if you don't change what you eat, you can be walking up a storm and still be too jiggly. Maybe you guys don't have jiggly places, but I sometimes feel like I've turned into a walking bowl of jiggly jello.

I don't like that saying because I want my no-no foods, but I think there is some truth to it.
    Thoughts?

unless you are a marathoner ,yes, I think there is some truth to it!
Though i think you can have your no-no foods and exercise , but you just need to keep it in moderation. That is key imho

      I feel you, Mark.

Every time i walk past the ice cream aisle at the grocery store, I have to resist buying any at all. Because I know that if I have a gallon of ice cream in my home....when I get those late night cravings....It will be eaten in a week or less.

I have to arrange my life to compensate for the inevitable weak moments.

It would have been impossible when I was married, without my wife avoiding the foods she really liked.

As an aside.....my cousin (nearly all my relatives are really obese) once told me that she was overweight because of a glandular problem. I told her that the reason I was fat (when I was fat) was that I ate four times the food of a normal human being.

I know that there can be serious glandular failures or other problems that can contribute to a person's weight. Hypothyroidism is one. Another is low T. When I discovered my extremely low T and started replacing it, my life changed 100%. I had energy for the first time in years. I have more muscle and strength now even without "working out." And I am not exhausted 24 hours a day. I know being low contributed to my weight.

But, and here's the but, most of those glandular problems are controlled by taking a shot or a pill. Yeah, there are the Dr. House type illnesses, but when I hear "gland problems" as a reason for fat, I think what you said about yourself. Because that's my issue too. I am an empathetic person who tries to be kind to others and give the benefit of the doubt. I feel for them, and I have (and still am) them, but I also believe that normal/good eating habits and some movement help. For example, my two known gland problems have been under control for years. All that's left is excuses. Again, not judgmental, but sometimes we have to admit our excuses are holding us back. I know mine have.

yeah Mark i think 95% of the obese cases attributing to glandular issues are just a crutch people use. Of course i may be wrong on that. And i dont wanna sound unempathetic but its like come on people lets be real.

I do think there is a certain segment of people who can legitimately attribute it to glands as far as obesity. But for the most part weight can be formulated with the equation intake of calories minus the expenditure of calories.

          that's the bottom line.

There are people who gain weight easily, because of their metabolism, low testosterone, or other factors.

But here is a fact of physics. If you take in fewer calories than you burn...you lose weight.

On my mother's side of the family, everyone is fat....I mean really fat. Why? Because they eat a lot for every meal...and they eat a lot of sugar. They drink soda (not sugar free). All the meat they eat is processed. I know, because I've been to the family dinners and reunions. Butter over everything....

They keep going on a crash diet...that lasts a day. Wonderful loving people....who are in the habit of eating a certain way.

Part of it, I think (maybe most of it) comes from the idea of being poor and not having enough to eat. So we always cleaned our plates, no matter how much was on it.

I still do it to this day. On a flight, I'll eat all of the snack provided, all the sandwich. It's just habit. So I have to simply not buy groceries with lots of carbohydrates and sugar,. I have to remove temptation.

It also helps that I'm in the habit of serious exercise every day. One effect of losing weight is that my face has lost most of it's fat, and so I have this annoying waddle under my chin. So now I look more my age. But at least I can now mow the lawn without being exhausted.

And for reasons I fail to understand, I've started my kung fu training again. My balance is terrible, my speed is gone, and my body is constantly telling me to stop. But for some reason, I do it.
