I am thinking about getting it.

How about saving files. When you save the files are the easily opened in open office?

Any info would be great.

I swear by open office. If someone has OO they can open documents saved as OO, but it gives you a choice to save docs in many different forms - MS of course being probably the most popular.
You can save your PDF's at a click of a button, and with just a few more clicks, lock them. I use OO Draw to make buttons (together with Irfanview, another free program), and simple gifs.
And of course there's a feature very similar to excel, powerpoint, etc - so you have your office suite without the MS BS.

I don't think you can go wrong getting this program.

      HS,

      thanks for the answer.

Do you know the difference between Openoffice.org and Openoffice.com?

Org is the free version. Which version do you have. I want to get the version you like. I want to use Impress to make my videos.

I second Sal's recommendation. I love Open Office. I use the free version but I didn't know they had a paid version, to be honest.

Okay........I'm glad an esteemed Warrior like yourself chimed in.

The paid version costs $13 for 3 years. Still a fantastic value.

Is OO updated like MS Office?

Here's another endorsement of OO. It's so good as a freebie I can't imagine what more you get with the paid version. But at that price I guess you can't go wrong.

Thank you..........I'll find some tutorials for IMPRESS and I should be okay..

Is there really a paid version? The only "paid" version of OO I've ever heard of are when scammers con people into paying for this otherwise-free software!

If there is a real, legitimate paid version, does anyone have a link? (Openoffice.com is a parked page.)

The paid version is called Star Office. It is $34.95 USD. The main difference is commercial fonts and a couple of other proprietary things including a database extension.

I just use the free version, Ron. I've never needed anything else. I'm not even sure what the difference is.....but if I ever need anything stronger, I'll check out the paid version.

As far as I was aware the free copy is for personal use and the paid copy is for corporate use.

Let's say I send a document to someone that does not have OO? Will they be allowed to open it in another Word Processing program, like MS word?

You can use "save as . . ." with a number of different formats (including Word Docs) to get round this.

          Ahh......okay. got it.

I've already downloaded it and started goofing around with it.

          Thanks for the link also.

I have it, but I only use the Writer program for the ability to convert Microsoft Word documents to PDF's (for ebooks, special reports, etc.). For that purpose it works great. I haven't used the other features yet.

I believe the paid version is the same but includes some commercial fonts. That's what the fee is for.

The free one IS a good product. There might not even be any difference between that and the paid version, but the free one works well.

Sounds like you have already made the leap. Good for you.

I love open office. Every once in a blue moon I have a problem when I switch from word to OO. If you start in OO you will have an easier time

And that's the whole truth. After all - at that price even if you decide you don't like something you can just dump it in the trash.

Another option is OxygenOffice Professional. It's basically OpenOffice on steroids. It contains more extras like templates, cliparts, samples, fonts and VBA support.Just like OpenOffice it's free.

I always support open source software because I feel that a lot of software is ridiculously over-priced. So here's another vote for OpenOffice. It is a superior suite of tools that I use all the time. You can open any MS office document in OpenOffice and even save to a MS Office file format which is fantastic.

I have been using it for years, as I don't need a Office as my primary tool.

It' great, free and you don't have to worry about to have a supercomputer to run it.

I just recently moved from MS to OO, I don't think I will go back.

It has everything I need for the perfect price.

Still learning some of the differences and the tutorial someone post above is great..thanks for that.
