Thunderbird is just being too much pain in the butt all of the sudden.
What other mail servers do you folks use and have good luck with?

    Darn.

I thought this was going to be a thread about the wine, in which case I was going to recommend Ripple, but I can see that's not the case.

    Get it?

    Case?

    As in case of wine.

    Oh, never mind...

Thunderbird is a client not a server. What is happening that's aggravating? Mine is fine, even after the upgrade to version 3.

Yeah thanks KJ - lot of help there.

Well for one thing it started to refuse sending my main email - and wants all sorts of maneuvers to allow it again -- that I have to have a tech complete for me, so I go and update thinking that will solve the problem - now it wants a master password. I don't have one so I go to find out how to solve this because I can't find where to select one. So I follow every step of the "fix" --- and it doesn't work. So I unistall that damned thing and reinstall thinking it's corrupted files -- and go through the whole damned rock and roll again...........and still can't get their "fix" procedure to work.

Thunderbird is just too much rock and roll to bother with any more --- I've had continual problems with it for 3 months and each time they get worse, now completely insane. I don't have time to go through a freakin' week of contact support for more innane crap til they finally hit an answer that works.

I want a new "client" -- does anyone know a good one (not incredimail - I don't want the client's ads on my emails).

The sending mail thing is easily fixed, it just isn't obvious. Under Tools, Account Settings, you have a list of the accounts you use. You scroll to the bottom and you will see - Outgoing Server (SMTP). Select that, then on the right you will see the server. Select edit and uncheck "use name and password". That's it. Authentication isn't needed for outgoing. It's a simple fix but hard to find.

First of all it decided it didn't want to send from my main website email - and I couldn't get it fixed - so I updated - now it wants a master password. I have gone through every one of their instructions and not one of them works.

I'm just done. I uninstalled it, then reinstalled and I got the old one back with all the folders and the whole nine yards - and the same problems. If they want to start making their products so damned difficult to get to run that you need a tech to do it for you, I don't want to mess with it. I've got 4 hours into it today when I really need to be doing some other work and still have to go straight to my server to deal with emails. It's a nightmare of a headache.

I'm thinking either pegasus or Eudora? Just want to see if anyone uses any of these other programs before I go download a new headache.

I have used Eudora in the past, and it was good. At the time I wanted anything other than a Microsoft product to use.

As you will see from that list, there's a whole slew of mail clients nowadays, but I don't have any other info on them, Sal, sorry.

hope you get it sorted...there's nothing worse then losing hours of time troubleshooting and not getting anywhere.

I'm wondering about viruses, too - but I have comodo firewall - Avast, dcomabobalator, crapcleaner, and xpantispy all running and nothing is showing. I just ran sophos on it and no signs of keyloggers. I've got to get doing something offline in a minute and am going to deep scan with avast and see if something just got missed.

I used to use Eudora, until they stopped making it.

So, I had to switch to Thunderbird, which was fine, but then it started behaving badly.

It would run for a good three months or so, then, all of a sudden, it would no longer send out mail from my main eMail address. It was nuts. I went through a reinstall and redoing a settings file or whatever else the Thunderbird forums recommended. Nothing.

Finally, after about a week, it went back to normal.

Then, three to four months later, boom, it would refuse to send mail again.

That time, I didn't bother with a reinstall and all that nonsense. Just held out for a week, then it went back to normal.

Three to four months later, boom, refused to send mail again.

This time, it didn't resolve after a week. I was on the lookout for an alternative, but couldn't find anything to my liking.

I fiddled with settings, and finally found the "Connection Timeout" setting and extended that.

      Since then, no problems.

Yeah, I extended the timeout, too. It was all the sudden wanting a master password when I updated and I never had a master password. Well - now I put in the update and my tech wrote back and said the problem was an error on the host and they were busy fixing it. So I have reinstalled and am doing what Dan suggests, and seeing if I can get by without the master password fix.......because the one listed on thunderbird troubleshooting doesn't work.

Meanwhile I am using the email on my server and it works fine there for now. Just a hassle.

I have used Gmail as well and really like it. Very versatile and you can check your email anywhere you are and on any computer with Internet access. For me, web-based email is the only way to go now.

I had set up Thunderbird for my mother on an old iMac. It was easy for her to use, but then she started having problems with it. I got sick of having to fix it and call tech support at her ISP, so I set her up with Hotmail (another good choice, though I've since gotten to like Gmail better, and am now trying Me.com for Mac users).

Oddly enough, whenever I hear "Thunderbird," especially the email client, I picture a classic Ford Thunderbird! Although not a 1957, more like the one in "Thelma and Louise" which I believe was an early to mid 60s model.

But getting back on track...I used to use Thunderbird for my email when I downloaded the Firefox browser for the first time back when it was introduced, and still in Beta (what was that, around 2005?), and I also downloaded Thunderbird. It worked well - except when my mother was having issues with it for her email and her ISP didn't support it. I just got tired of trying to troubleshoot it on my own due to the ISP changing things. Finally I switched her to Hotmail. I use Gmail and Mac.com myself now as I like it being web based and accessible anywhere. Although in the back of my mind, I secretly wish I had all the emails downloaded onto my own computer, rather than on someone else's server.

Warning if you plan to update - they have some major issues that when you update it, it will want a master password. Unfortunately, it just assumes you have one and even the fixes they list don't work because it refuses to recognize their posted error code fix and it won't let you in without your non-existent master password to do anything else.
Looks like a shot system until they get in gear and fix it.

The biggest advantage that I found when I switched (years ago) was that you're no longer tied down to considering one particular computer as your "primary" machine.

As for the ads, while they feel a bit uncomfortable at first, I've found that they can actually be more relevant than on other sites, (for obvious reasons), and so I've found myself clicking on them more often.

I hate web based email, lose you internet, it's unavailable. If you leave your desktop program running, it downloads all the emails from the various addresses allowing you to refer back to them at your leisure. (up until the time your connection went down) Cant do that on web based. If your going away, thats the time to close it and go that route.

The ability to physically have, store and archive emails on your computer (backup etc) is better than relying on web based service that may shut your account down for no reason.

Years ago when I still used Pocomail I used to think this way. Been using Gmail since you had to be invited (2004 was it? It was a while ago) and not ONCE did what you describe become an issue for me. And these days, if I lose my home connection for any reason I turn to my Iphone to read them. No worries.

What got me to switch to Gmail was the flexibility to read my emails from ANY computer - not just my home one. This became important when I traveled. I forward ALL of my website emails to my Gmail. I even have some sorted into their own folders so I know where they came from.

I'd never go back to an email client. Besides, there are apps you can use to save your Gmail locally, and in fact, Gmail now allows this:

I've had a gmail address for awhile now - mostly for throw away mail and stuff that might sell my address and swamp me with spam (um, done that) but I didn't realize you could add other emails to it and check all in one place, or that it would notify you or that you can use it in a pop-up either.

Just never needed to wonder about it before, so never noticed.

I'd just sign up for a new email address with Gmail then. Keep your original one as a throw-away account, especially if it's inundated with spam already. Then start using your new account and link up some extra email addresses to it. Gmail has never let me down. I've been using it for a few years, and as my primary email for about 18 months.

Sal, thunderbird was discontinued (pity) a couple of years ago (although it's still available to download), no new updates. Did not stop me installing it on a friends computer in place of office outlook 2007 which went catastrophically wrong for no reason. Works well and its ability to auto discover the settings of various mail servers and set them up for you by itself was a real boon.

I wish I had seen this earlier, I would have told you it was just a mail service itself having problems, it's never usually the mail program you are using.

Yes, l have a throwaway hotmail account, always comes in handy for social media or dodgy new signups, which usually pesters you with useless emails, (borderline spam).

I also have Gmail, and Yahoo mail, etc.

The thing about Gmail is if you talk to someone about how to use a pistol for example your conversation can be monitored and edited. Or you go back to your last message and find it is edited or deleted!

Yahoo Mail is my primary or business one, since it isn't monitored or edited!

Last thing l want is for someone to be looking over my shoulder when having a conversation with someone!

It was a blast to the past - all the friends that posted back to me that are no longer here. Bill, Dan - and especially Tommy. Sigh. I miss them.

I used Thunderbird once and thought it was subapar... I also recommend Outlook as a replacement, though I prefer just Gmail with the Gmail UI... it works fine.
