    I'm looking forward to it. The Saints vs Vikings game was tremendous - but IMO, if NO play the same way in the Superbowl, the Colts will destroy them.

    Yeah, the saints will definately need to bring their 'a' game. Manning has some skills on his own and the colts in general are a pretty good team.

          haha. I don't think there is anyone in Australia who enjoys both Rugby and AFL. The supporters from each hate the other code with a passion.

          As an AFL guy, I enjoy having a dig at Rugby wherever possible.

          I was too young to feel the full effects of losing those two, same with '95. 2008 definitely hurt, though.

          Although, '07 and '09 more than made up for it.

      Americans...Check out the rugby video and notice what all the players AWAY from the ball are doing...Yawn. Talk about no action. All you have to do in rugby is watch the ball and you'll never miss a thing. In football, you often have to "rewind" a play 2-3 times to see all the collisions taking place.

      In football, the hits come from everywhere, your head better be on a swivel. In rugby, you'll never get blindsided and you will never be blocked, meaning you never have to shed a blocker (or two), then make a tackle.

          The only remotely interesting thing about Gridiron (I refuse to calll a game that is played with your hands football - see below) are the cheerleaders.

          Depending on what part of the world you live in, there are six sports referred to as football (in alphabetic order).

          Associated Football
          Australian Rules
          Gaelic football
          Gridiron
          Rugby
          Rugby League

          Of these only the first three are football, the rest would be better described as cross country wrestling. And of the first three, Aussie Rules is by far the most exciting, from a spectators point of view.

          Americans, upon first seeing a game of Aussie Rules, often say that there is no way they would play it without pads. Pussies.

          Oops, sorry Thom, I forgot to mention "International Rules" a hybrid of Aussie and Gaelic football. I probably forgot to mention it because those pesky Irishmen keep beating us at it. However, we can beat the Irish at the drinking contest which follows.

            What about Canadian rules football?

            And if Austrailian rules football is so tough, why were the only two Autrailian rules football players to play in the NFL both punters? Which I agree, is a wimpy position.

            But no blocking in rugby? That ain't action. That ain't tough. And that takes very little skill.

            Not to mention, American football is a lot more than being tough. It's also about being SMART, hand-eye coordination, as well as being versatile. In the NFL a player may go against a WORLD CLASS sprinter one play, then take on a 330 pound guy that can bench press 700 pounds (like Eric Allen) the next play.

            How many world class sprinters are in those other leagues? Ever had a single medal winner in any Olympic sprint event? A simple yes or no would be appreciated.

            How much film study do rugby players have to do before each game? How big is their playbook that they have to learn?


            In the other sports mentioned, every player is basically the same, with the same general size and skills.

            Now lets talk about concusions. I suggest you football bashers do a little research into how serious a problem concusions are in our football. Players' brains are getting scrambled from all the contact they take.

            Or how the average running back's career is about 4 years and that almost none perform a top form past the age of 30. They are too beaten up.

            Now back to being smart...How much do rugby players make? If they are so tough and athletic, why not use their brains and play the "easy" Amercian game and make millions of dollars?

            MMA/UFC heavy-weight champ Brock Lesnar tried out for a pro football team and couldn't make it. Who do you have that's tougher? LOL

              LOL! Are you kidding me?

              Hmm, let's see.. maybe because there is no NFL played in Australia. The AFL players who have gone to play NFL were approached by NFL scouts and had never so much as touched a gridiron prior to being approached.

              If an Australian could go from playing AFL their whole lives to jumping straight into an NFL side that would say more bad than good about your sport.

              It works both ways, though. Lebron James wouldn't be much good at AFL if he was to come over now. However, if he grew up in Australia and played AFL over Basketball whilst growing up it's scary to think about how incredibly good he would be. I'm sure the same could be said for many other basketballer's and NFL players.

              If American Football was popular throughout Australia we would have players playing NFL, other than punters.

                Being a 400 pound monster who likes to fight doesn't make you tough, running back with the flight of the ball whilst keeping your eyes on the footy and not worrying about what's about to happen to you whilst 100kg+ guys are running straight at you makes you tough.

                Running straight for the ball with your head down without any regard to your safety makes you tough.

                This also has very little relevance to anything. Obviously you're going to have some elite sprinters in a game like NFL when speed is so important. It's no where near as important in the AFL and no one is going to get a game simply because they can run fast.

                Also, I'm not disputing how athletic and strong NFL players are. America blows Australia out of the water when it comes to most track and field events.

                I don't much care for Rugby, but my initial point also relates to this. If a Rugby player could come across and play NFL without playing it before that would say more bad than good about your sport.

                For the record I don't mind the NFL and I will be tuning in to the Superbowl, I just have more respect for the guys who do it without padding.

    Concussions?

    I played County Rugby 35 to 40 years ago (no such thing as professionals in those days - we did it for pride) and I watched one of my best friends break his neck in a tackle.

    I'll bow out of this debate - let's not get too serious about a "game". Keep up the banter.
